Nvidia GTX 460

I will be picking up 2 x MSI Cyclone 1GB GTX460's in the States, ~$450 for a SLI setup that outperforms a single GTX480 and gets close to a 5970's performance; being cheaper and quieter, no brainer for me.

Well at least your case will have a built-in heater.....good luck with that one.A no brainer you say.....;)

2 gtx460's only get up to about 80 degrees which is around what the 5870 gets to as well. So its not too bad

Ya the problem is here, they R3000 a pop, SLI R6000 so for a little more cash you can get 5970! Which i'd do.

Maybe, maybe not but I reckon each to his own. It's a good temp for baking eggs....Jokes aside, for that price I reckon it's fine. One must also just take into consideration that ATI is busy with their S.I architecture and that with that said I feel Nvidia are gonna get caught slipping....

Yeah, just like any SLI or CF configuration, extra heat vs a single card setup is always a by-product no? What point are you trying to make?

A 5850 under load (running Crysis) will produce 67 degrees celcius of heat, while a SLI GTX 460 1GB OC'ed will produce 80 degrees celcius; 13 degrees extra, OMG!! I'm gonna need some L33t ass cooling to manage those extreme temps!
For those not on drugs, still a no brainer ;)

Yeah agreed, buying locally we all get ripped off, but if one has an opportuntiy to pick up 2 of these guys for ~R3500 all in, that is a good investment.

That is an incorrect statement. It will be at 67 degrees, but because of the fan, the actual heat produced as expelled out of the case. With my card I sit on 65 degrees in furmark. I can guarantee you that my card is producing more heat than the standard, just my fan is running faster, keeping it cooler..

YA i know. It's such a shame.. Even though i wont be buying one. Hopefully they will drop in price for the sa consumers!

Thats only true if you avoid the taxman coming back into the country. Still ends up being cheaper though at around R4400

Yeah...run your SLI temps at that degrees C under load with crysis. While mine runs 51c....under load....My point I'm trying to make is that sooner or later something is gonna cave in at that temps....

Not necessarily.. Nvidia card are built well and handle the heat they generate. My friends 8800GT idles in the 60's and load is about 90 odd.. Been like that since he bought it (2years ago).. They just run hot...

So true what nakedPeanut says... The 460 only makes sense while its noticeably cheaper then the 5850, if the 1 gig is the same price or more expensive, it no longer makes sense. It would appear that Prophecy ARE taking the piss a little (or their suppliers... Someone somewhere is) as the 1gig RRP is $229 while the 5850 RRP is $299. So the fact that they are that closely priced locally is bullcrap!

I spoke to wootware the other day and they will be getting end of next week. The guy said about 2k-2.4k for the 768 version.. So I think it might be the suppliers...

Seriously? Thats a pretty broad and general statement, perhaps some folks who have been running SLI/CF setups should comment on that, their cards must be failing regularly then...
I have a 4 year old 8800GTX, where under load it approaches 90C, never had an issue. My brother has a 2 year old 8800GT, similar temps, no issues, we must just be lucky then...

Your logic will then apply to all cards running above your card's temp, including the 5870 CF, 5870 CF, 5970, 4850, 4870, 8800GT, 3870, 4870 X2, GTX 480, etc...

No clue what the price is. A friend of a friend works there and he thinks their prices are state secrets or something. He did vaguely say something between R2500 and R3000 for the cheapest one...I'm assuming that's the 768MB.

Rip off considering their prices overseas.

So imagine what the 1gb ones are going to sell for. They have a 5850 going for R2700. So again ludicrously expensive.

Well if the heat don't bother then it's all good.I just had pretty shetty experiences with cards in single and SLI setup.Wonder why Nvidia didn't put any decent coolers on their cards knowing it's gonna run hot...
