Oculus Quest 2 - worth it?

Tried the demo of super hot, looks pretty cool, so maybe I'll start there :)

Out of interest, where did you get your accessories?

I'm busy printing a strap "adapter" for now - the stock setup doesn't work for me, the headset keeps slipping forward, and going blurry.

Printed on too, works well

You probably don't have your tv attached to your ceiling. There are times where you may just want to watch something lying down and this is where I feel VR comes in (the other scenario would be travelling but unless you travel often it probably isn't a consideration). In a lying down position you don't have to put the strap on as tightly as gravity will just do it for you so it is more comfortable. I use Skybox VR personally though not Bigscreen (network shares, better features, better codec support). Also, 1080P in VR does not look that amazing. I found once I switched to watching 4K content that the clarity was improved to a point that I would actually say it looks pretty darn good. The quest 2 supports up to 8K video content but it is pretty tough finding 8K content. But look, you are right most of the time watching content on an actual TV or cinema is going to be a better option, but I would say mostly for social reasons. Also, 3D content in VR looks more 3D than any 3D cinema. All in all I just see it as another option, I mostly watch things on a regular TV and VR is more a gaming thing.

Never had any issues laying down and watching TV on a TV, been doing so for probs 15 years, almost never sit and watch Arab, too uncomfortable.

At the movies, on the rare occasion I go sure, but if I’m watching at home I am lying down.

Unfortunately here in SA we have a bit of a gap in terms of available options in the market, and the options we do have tend to be overpriced. I have ordered everything from Amazon so far, even including the shipping cost it works out significantly cheaper than local options. It is not even close either, we are getting ripped off in SA - nevermind the fact that the options are rather limited. Unless you are really impatient and can't wait it is not worth it.

For example, local:

Amazon:

$67.95 including import fees = R1059,56 at current exchange rate.
Ok so fine it is on special right now for $39, but even at the usual price of $49 you are looking at a shade over R1200 which is still significantly cheaper.

Having said all that I just used the elite strap as an example. It isn't what I would suggest or recommend. I have heard stories of the official elite strap sometimes breaking and this put me off. The Halo and Kiwi straps are probably what you should be looking into, there are many youtube reviews on both, take your time and give them a watch then decide. I do think though it absolutely is the first thing you will want to replace, if you bought just one accessory it should be a strap replacement. Though perhaps see how the 3d printed option works out for you first. Also worth mentioning a battery bank attached to the strap helps with two problems: extend playtime + a nice counterweight to eliminate the front heavy feel of the headset. I attached it similarly to how this guy did, looks kinda hacky but works for me, I may 3d print something more permanent later but waiting on the Kiwi strap to arrive to figure out how I wanna do it. Even with the default strap having a counterweight at the back makes things signficantly more comfortable:

Also, did this for a knuckle strap (Though I have ordered the Kiwi knuckle strap together with my strap order - so for me this is temporary):

(Used the rubber band method)

Main issue I always had with movies is the resolution. You're watching a 70" TV at effectively sub-1080p. It looks blurry to me compared to a TV. But I like the experience otherwise, especially in 3d films.

Try watching 4K videos in VR. Had the same issue when watching 1080P sources, that effectively become bad when magnified as it does in VR. But look, I do see this as kindof a niche situational use and I would definitely not be raving about how amazing an experience it is. My gf would need to be busy with something otherwise we tend to watch movies together and cannot do this in VR unless we had two headsets.

Lying flat on your back looking straight up? Lying any which way you want and be able to orient the screen exactly where you want it ?

It's not the magnification, it's literally the number of pixels on the screen. Per eye it's 1080 horizontally but you cut out a lot of that with the area around the cinema screen. It's physically impossible for the Quest 2 to show even a fhd movie.

The quest 2 is 1832 x 1920 per eye.

Anyone else tried the Zenith MMO ? Tried it last night for the first time (native quest version), it may just be the first VR MMO done right. Playing as a DPS Essence Mage it feels fantastic throwing fireballs etc and gliding feels incredible. Still though, early days need to see more of the game but first impressions are really good.

Or… and here is a novel idea, I leave the tv on the wall, I look at it and I don’t have like half a kilo on my face making me sweat and moving awkwardly every single time I move.

Thank goodness us human being developed with eyes in front that can also move independently of our heads…

So unless the back of my head is what’s facing the Tv, I can pretty much still see it problem free.

It also greatly limits my ability to push a pause button or use my phone while watching TV, cause we’ll.. multitasking.

I mean if it is uncomfortable for you it is uncomfortable for you. Doesn't bother me as much

E.g. Virtual desktop supports hand tracking, you can set up getting phone notifications on your headset if urgent stuff.

Personally I don't browse other stuff while watching on VR, you watch stuff that's good on it, it's not a "passive" watching experience.

Saw a RTS type VR game, where you have almost a table top view of the action, anyone know what its called? I can't find it again.

Anyone know if we can somehow use referrals in SA? I see in some countries you get up to $60 in credit.

Pity,

Second part it wrong, you can do a factory reset to use the referral.

You sure, from what I read it was on account setup, not device. So getting a second quest does not allow you to use a second referral

Yip, was all over the Reddit thread I was reading on referrals, I think it only applies to new account, but if you setup the device prior to putting in the referral, you can do a factory reset and redo it.

Your purchases, etc. are retained, just need to redownload.
