um, they are hoping to buy content from DSTV and sell it cheaper than DSTV? What planet are these guys from? DSTV will put a massive mark-up on their content. Expect the final price to be 1.5 times what DSTV is now.

Satellite TV is a fail. Don't get me wrong, if they really can come in with decent content at a cheaper price then I will def. sign up. But somehow I cannot see this happening. You want good content AND cheaper prices IN South Africa?

What is wrong with this picture?

My prediction: They will go live in the third quarter of this year with mediocre content (no DSTV content) at around R400 subs monthly. They will be plagued with technical problems well into 2011.

ah now i see

the only channel I want is SPIKE TV - i would pay R30 a month for that channel alone!

They will buy content that MC have already aired. Read the article :)
 
Anyone but me wonder howecome both Monochoice and ODM can both get a decoder to market with features for under R400 yet the government wants folks to pay R700 for probably a worse settop box? :confused:
 
The only content that will make sense to buy from Multichoice is SS. And even that should just be a temporary solution.

For everything else, they can source it from the channel itself. I highly doubt that Discovery, NatGeo et al would have granted MC exclusive access, so I think that MC is bullsh*ting.

Hmmm, both of you may be wrong. I can see them buying sports content etc as that is produced by MC but series and movies are negotiated with the owning studios/channels not DSTV. They can't sell a show like House or something as that agreement must be negotiated between ODM and FOX.

I did. Are you still somehow under the impression that DSTV is going to sell their content to ODM at a cheap rate? Seriously?

This is Naspers we are talking about... DSTV, News24, M-Web, Kalahari.net etc. They are not in the business of selling anything cheap.
 
Can ODM not take Multichoice to the competition commision if they don't want to ditribute SS content at a fair price?

Yeah if they can get Comedy Central, HBO and Sci-fi then I'll sign up straight away :)

I would still like my documentary channels though.

All the more reason to allow us to choose what we want to watch, and charge per channel. Because not all of us have the same preferences.

Only if it can be proven that they are selling it to ODM at a different price than they would to SABC etc, otherwise free market for their own produced content I think.
 
Movies, Series, Documentary, Children, Music, Religion, News, Sport and Local Content.

ROFL - that is generic enough to cover anything seen on SABC.

As for altech manufacutring decoders... bleah

From Fin24 today -

Govender said that ODM would not compete head-to-head with Multichoice's DStv service.

"We're creating a more affordable product in the second pay-TV window. We buy the content post-Multichoice before it goes free-to-air, and therefore offer it at a much better price," said Govender.

I'm assuming they mean buying older stuff from the studios, not necessarily from Multichoice? In other words somewhere age-wise between M-Net and SABC/E-TV.
