Official 2011 Rugby World Cup Thread

I have looked at it a couple of times, it went outside the pole for a bit and was directly above the pole for quite a while. It's impossible from the camera to see whether it went outside before the poles, after it passed the poles or at the poles. The only people that could tell would be those at the poles.

Would the kicker be able to tell cause he seemed certain?

No.

So where do we draw the line? Allow each time 5 TV challenges per game? Let the TV ref run the game?

For me? Leave the TV ref as is and let the man in the middle make the decisions. Much as I was not happy with Wayne Barnes, I believe in the IRB's objective to let the game flow. Some of the rules and laws need tweaking...

I also watched the TV clip, you cannot really tell.

You would need slow motion from under the posts looking up, and that is not available.

I was quite surprised that the only angle televised, even after the fact, was the standard one we all already seen. Guess the producer didn't deem it worthy to dwell on but I for one would have liked a few more camera angles of the kick. Suppose 14 minutes in no one was too fazed with the decision. Had that kick taken place in the 78th minute different story!!! Totally, different story!!!

Agreed but I do feel the refs should be given the freedom to use it more than they are. Barnes could have referred the kick and he erred by not doing so but referring kicks to the TMO is hardly ever done and hardly an issue the one time out of possibly 1000 kicks when the result is in doubt.

Where I think the IRB has lost the plot though is refusing comment from the TMO on forward passes preceding tries. They been quite vociferous about that so if a massive forward pass isn't picked up during live play and a try is scored the TMO cannot comment on the forward pass. For me that's just insane..

haha Can't do that!! Sometimes the ball gets kicked between the posts for reasons other than drop goals, penalties or conversions... In any event the touch judges get it right 99% of the time...

Agreed. It's a rare thing that a kick is in doubt. First one I have seen in a long time.

Also agree with what McD said, there is more than at the disposal of the ref & co to get the call right the majority of the time.

Bit off the goal kick topic. But I just noticed Devill is 2nd and DJ... is 10th in our Superbru Pool after the first lot of games. That is out of 338 players.

Impressive. When they talk I will listen ;)

In my opinion mickey if they are going to have the technology make use of it, that kick if it was the wrong call could have been the difference between them winning and losing.

They have the slow mo, there should not be a question here, it should have been addressed via slow mo's. How many incidents like this would you reckon there are? 1 in 20 games? 1 in 50 games, i have never seen a call i thought was wrong to be honest.

Sure it may slow down the game but is rugby really that fast? Why have the technology if you won't make use of it.

Wow thanx for that video, the call looks very wrong to me, it looks over to me hey? Yea sandman that was in the 15th minute but why do we need to wonder if the call was right? get the slow mo in and make the call right that is the whole of the system to make sure there are no poor calls, this is not like soccer that is stuck in 1910. Those 3 points basically decided the game, i mean i know the events would have been different had it been kicked but still how can you get that so wrong when you have a system in place to ensure you get it right? How long would it have taken to see the different replays? 30 seconds more? No get it right and make sure you have right then let's continue. I would rather slow the game down and ensure the call is good.

The ref could have referred to but chose not to! The TMO is allowed to adjudicate on goal kicks.

This happens maybe once in every 100-150 games, very rare...

The TV replay can be very misleading. Yes it looks over but depth perception on a 2D image is very misleading...

This. The two linesmen who made the call were in the best position to make it. I doubt both of them would have gotten it wrong.

No i am debating whether it is or not, at the end of the day it's been called i just find it hard to believe that with such good technology it doesn't get used to try and get the call right.

As you say this is not something that happens every game so it is not a matter of slowing the game down, it's similar to soccer when they check did it cross the line did it not, happens very rarely but it can change the outcome of the game and the technology is there in rugby.

If they did refer it hey sandman what do you think call would have been? If i was the tmo i would have given it hahaha but then again perhaps you are correct regarding depth perception but have you ever seen a penalty or conversion that you have been so unsure about? It's my first time hehe

Well done, fellas.

The TMO would have needed half a dozen different camera angles to get that right. From the one there's no ways he could make an accurate assessment.

I reckon the touch judges got it right though!

What made it even more difficult to call is the ball went over the top of the posts. Had the posts been 3-4 metres longer that ball probably would have struck the upright, it was that close!! I can tell you now (and I watch stupid amounts of rugby) I usually check the touch judges flags. TV will trick your eyes more often than not. Often I've thought a kick was over when it wasn't and vice versa.

The touch judges had the best view to make the call and if they say it wasn't over it wasn't over.

And ja, the Welsh try did look suspiciously forward.

+1. I also thought it looked forward but then again I am not on the field and thus I am happy to go with the reff's call unless a camera can CLEARLY show that it was forward. Same thing with the goal kick, the assistant refs were in the best possible spot to make the call and I am more than happy to accept their call.

There's also players like Hougaard who like to high dive over the line, and they could be caught in the net.

Lol :D I can't remember who it was but a while ago a player also did the "swann dive" and landed on the ball, winding himself in the process, I could not stop laughing :D

they must change the rules then so that becomes points.

Haha, no thank you. We like rugby not Aussie rules :)

I wouldn't mind seeing the replay now though, just to see whether is was good or not... Hook probably should have been a bit more vocal about getting it referred. He may have convinced Barnes to refer it.

Frans Steyn seems to think it went over...

The ref should make the call and if he was happy no player should be able to change his mind for him. I think it was missing then swung back in to go straight over the poles.

Lol, nothing but pure luck. I just hope the second round goes as well.

Why were there no games yesterday and today?

Gives the fans time to travel and spend more (time and $$) in NZ as well as giving the players time to recover a bit as well as travel to where they need to be.

Well those are my thoughts in any case.

One game a week is enough for anyone.

It's not like soccer where the worst injusies tend to be damaged hairstyles.
