Official Afrihost Q&A Thread

What the hell? To the guys praising Afrihost and their decisions to throttle after 30 gigs... Is a typical South African attitude. You guys pay for a service which you expect (uncapped) and now you get told it's 30gigs and what do you do? Roll over and take it! I'm sorry, I'm not impressed at all! 1gig a day LOL! gimme a break!

Use your mind! This is not a cop out it is aimed at the abusers, people who queue 24/7 downloads for a week/month at a time. They obviosuly dont expect you to sit and wait for your 2gb update to download just that you should not queue the 2gb download followed by 100 such downloads. Understand?

Let me explain to you in little words. It is one of those clauses that they add to a contract that they don't expect anyone to follow but it lets them target specific individuals when it suits them. Thats a cop out in my book. It's just an escape clause.

I still don't think this product should be called uncapped. With their logic my 56k dialup modem is is also uncapped, uncapped but useless.

Ponder that is uncapped, for some reason this forum has setup uncapped to sound like uncapped + unthrottled + unrestricted.

There is a product that does this, it's called a leased line. No restrictions what so ever and only R2000 per 64k

Gian, Thank you for your post.

To everyone else crying about what happened, you're all tools, don't post here about how unhappy you are and threaten to cancel your account with Afrihost, it was stated SO many times that this was not intended for abuse, over and over, did you think you would be an exception and get away with it? Do you honestly think that you will get a better service somewhere else? Sure maybe not being throttled, but go pay more than Afrihost and get worse customer service at the same time, I have used a lot of isp's over the years, and none compare to Afrihost, just today I've had someone from suppport phoning me, being so polite and friendly, helping me as much as he could, reporting a fault to Telkom on my behalf, all this at 8pm, tell me one other isp that helps like this?

If you think you will get better service from someone else, go for it, I recommend Telkom, they REFUSED to help me today because they aren't my ISP, I had to wait on hold for 20 minutes before I heard that.

Now, put your big boy panties on and stop complaining, after all, is it Afrihosts fault you don't read properly? I saw three entirely different discussions about this not being intended for abuse, if you missed that, and are complaining, you're a tool.

So then break it down for me please.

If i download 100gb a month is mweb making a loss and why would mweb want to sign up thousands of people only to make a loss? Logically that makes little to no sense in my mind.

Seacom bandwidth as well as telkom ipc costs an isp about R8000 per Mb/s. I'm sure mweb because of their size can get it down to about R5000 but even then its not cheap.

SA has the worst consumers on the planet. You can feed them schit and they will be happy ;)

As above "Get a suitable business account"

Will you pay for it? Then I will be glad to. The promise was for people not abusing with 100's of GB's (that insinuates 200 or more). This was not the case. I average 4GB per day - some days I will 100MB others I will do 18GB - depends on what I am working on. I do not require prioritized traffic, I do not require torrent access, I do not do massive wasteful usage. So tell me why should I have a business account and not the one that promised to deliver to my exact needs?

Sorry don't read correctly? I recall seeing hundreds of gb's and 200gb mentioned now it has been changed to 30gb? What is stopping them changing it to 15gb to protect the network next month? They seem to change their T & C on a daily basis so when you guys are sitting with 10gb uncapped shaped and throttled to hell accounts you may change your mind :D

Amazing how there are so many one post wanders that know exactly whats going on on MyBB

I've been pretty much been saying the same thing all day, and defending Afrihost to the hilt. However, there is a very obvious difference between shaping excessive usage and throttling an uncapped account to one quarter of its line speed after a mere 60gb usage. 60gb is not excessive on a 4Mb line, not by any stretch of any imagination. What happened to "200 gigabytes" and then "hundreds of gigabytes"? And it is not just certain protocols that will be heavily shaped, but the entire line throttled. There was nothing in the FAQ or product description about throttling the line speed.

Looks to me like those 10 engineers are now defending their company :D on mybb.

Well whatever if fanboys want to stick to a company who throttle you at 30gb's then do so, mweb FTW

Gian thanks for clarifying many of the issues. It's a pity that this account doesn't suit my needs anymore. I would be quite happy to have a shaped service during the day and then open the flood gates at night. Uncapped to me means I can get what I want when I want, except I might have to wait a bit longer for stuff if it's during peak periods.

If you could clarify the correct procedure for canceling an account from next month, that would be great. I have already sent you a PM with my details.

Who knows, after a few months things might be different and hopefully I can return to AH.

:)

i just hit 105gig on my mweb account:P and running full speed still (and no its no illegal, im mirroring the gentoo portage locally for fun)

Shayd, stop spouting BS.

I'm on uncapped/unshaped 24/7 without any restrictions, throtteling, shaping or vague FUP, actually there is no FUP & it's running at full adsl line speed. I'm not going to tell you what you can do with your suggestion wrt a leased line as it's pretty rude.
