Official Afrihost Q&A Thread

Ok, if you have nothing constructive to add except your own opinion, please don't voice it.

That was but one simple example of the types of data usage I have in my house. My house itself uses bandwidth with things being monitored and that data being pushed up to a server I host elsewhere so that I can access it from anywhere.

Do you want to pay for the account so that I can do all of these types of things? hmmmm.. I thought not.

While I accept your houslehold has different data needs, maybe cater to this via differnt accounts as I and others do ?

Here are a few things...

1) HD content streaming
2) Audio streaming
3) Monitoring systems
4) Work related database stuff as well as personal database related stuff
5) Media Center aggregating (not series and movies downloading, but meta data etc etc etc)
6) Pushing photos onto the net.

Thats just a small portion of the stuff that happens in my house.

I did say average user...

but anyway.. I do most of that, and would be hard pressed to go over 50GB in month *shrug*

Who said its an excuse?

Why must I pay for a business account when I am not running a business from home?.... I am doing development of personal projects at home yes, but its not a business.

Yay for you that you can afford 4 different adsl accounts to cater for your varying needs, can I kiss the ground you walk on. I have other things that demand my money before ADSL gets considered.

Time to cancel...At least you were honest but that doesn't make your service worth it. I would prefer a hardcap at 100gb. So screw this!

Yeah I know... I'd like to think at times I'm average.. but I know my data needs are not entirely average.

Up until 6 months ago I would have thought a 50gb bandwidth bill excessive, but as I've added more tech to my household the bandwidth usage has gone up VERY quickly :o

Don't how how to tell you this, you use volume for business, can you guess what the business account caters for?

Business accounts are for individuals that require unshaped access for business protocols, also static ip's etc.... there is a significant difference between a single man working from home and an office with 5 to 10 people. By your argument all IT people that work at night should have business accounts. Makes you wonder what people like you think we earn.

...seems I need new toys at home. I'm clearly behind.

Gian, Thank you for your post.

To everyone else crying about what happened, you're all tools, don't post here about how unhappy you are and threaten to cancel your account with Afrihost, it was stated SO many times that this was not intended for abuse, over and over, did you think you would be an exception and get away with it? Do you honestly think that you will get a better service somewhere else? Sure maybe not being throttled, but go pay more than Afrihost and get worse customer service at the same time, I have used a lot of isp's over the years, and none compare to Afrihost, just today I've had someone from suppport phoning me, being so polite and friendly, helping me as much as he could, reporting a fault to Telkom on my behalf, all this at 8pm, tell me one other isp that helps like this?

If you think you will get better service from someone else, go for it, I recommend Telkom, they REFUSED to help me today because they aren't my ISP, I had to wait on hold for 20 minutes before I heard that.

Now, put your big boy panties on and stop complaining, after all, is it Afrihosts fault you don't read properly? I saw three entirely different discussions about this not being intended for abuse, if you missed that, and are complaining, you're a tool.

Lemme guess... Your the kind of guy that enters Survivor ONLY to play super nice friendly South African. Grow some balls! Stop letting companies dictate what they can and will do with our money! I paid for uncapped, I heard rumblings about throttled 200gigs and got throttled after 32gigs. I'm disappointed in AH and the way it was handled!!!!!!

Gian,

I would still like an answer to my question, what happens toward the end of the month when all your regular (never mind heavy) 4Mb users are throttled, and your pipe is underutilized? Do you remove the throttle? Or do you get a refund from IS? Answer carefully...

I won't be going with Afrihost, but:

After you have moved 30 GBs you will be moved into a
different category whereby certain ports will be shaped
more aggressively. However, web and email will still be
prioritised.

After moving a total of 60 GBs you will be moved into a
different category where your line speed is throttled to
1024 kbps per second and certain shaping protocols are in
place.

After moving a total of 90 GBs then you will be moved
into a category where you will be throttled to 512 kbps.
Certain shaping protocols will also be in place here.

After moving a total of 120 GBs you will be moved into a
category where your line will be throttled to 386 kbps.
Certain shaping protocols will also be in place here.

After moving a total of 150 GBs you will be moved into a
category where you are throttled to 128 kbps.

IMO, the above is effectively capping. It may be a selective/triggered cap, but it's still capping, and such accounts should no longer be advertised as uncapped.

I thought about uploading all my personal photo's I've taken over the years to picasa - 20GB worth. 50GB+ is easily doable.

Ya, but that's a once off.. I'm talking about 50GB's every month. ...even worse, these people moving 1TB in month?

My point is you dont walk into the holiday INN, expecting to get away with the things you can at the Table Bay... You cant expect to feed your family at woolworths every month if you have a checkers budget. I am not being horrible here, I dont have an unlimited budget, but as I rank data as one of my needs it gets a higher priority (according to my wife unneccesarily) but it ? (IT) is my (our) breadwinner and as such deserves the required attention and budget.

Yep, International Standards, My A$$, I thought there is a catch. There was never an intention to get to International standards, Just con the South Africans to believe they are really "Uncapped" as we(ISP's) will "cap" them by throttling their speeds. The stupid South Africans are so used to be conned they would not even know the difference and they would believe "Pigs Learned to Fly". So Yeah Thanks but NO THANKS for nothing! I will rather join Mweb now. At least maybe their accounts system works!

How will this work for 384kb users? Do we also get our speeds slowed after a certain usage amount?

IMO, these accounts are great for people to get a second 384K line with uncapped for their torrents, etc and then hold on to the 4Meg with a capped account for performance, browsing, etc.

Will the throttling policies be implemented for high CAP accounts such as the 100GB account? My downloads seem to be going very slowly this evening :-(

Ya, but that's a once off.. I'm talking about 50GB's every month. ...even worse, these people moving 1TB in month?

Listen in the end it does not matter how much data you pull. They selling it as a fking uncapped product ffs.

Dont wanna rock the boat anymore

True, but then the months that I want to do large volumes I can't because of the throttling. I'd need to split it up over multiple months - might as well go for a fixed cap then....or just move to another ISP.

I know of no-one that has come close to that. Most people haven't even gotten to 20GB before being throttled.... yeah yeah yeah I know they "pushed the stop button" but according to Gian's statement they will keep pushing the button in exactly the same fashion.
