Official Afrihost Q&A Thread

Well, there's ISPA, GetClosure, or the option of simply walking away if you think you're not getting good value for your money. The way I see it (and the way all the regulators will see it), you don't actually have any legs to stand on here. You agreed to the potential of exactly this sort of thing.

I said "the way I see it", so I'm speaking entirely under my own authority. Though you're welcome to contact them for their input?

Jinne, you can even count to two. Never a dull moment.

Maybe you should read what you posted.... I can count to two - but you seem to be struggling with reading.

wogan, xrapidx.
Really guys, do you have to lengthen this thread with your petty games?

I have just mailed a few ISP's regarding their usage policy, and if they are going to be throttling after certain speeds.

With regards with anyone wanting a refund for March, thats just cheeky. You got 40+gig for R144. Thats a bargain no matter what way you look at it.

Having spent most my life developing application to track network usage, it was quiet obvious to me the package would be shaped and throttled if you did not play ball.

There is a certain football company in town at the moment and they have really big pipes and they pay accordingly. Most would think because they have some much bandwidth they could not care - but they very much do!
They want to know exactly who did what and when so they can eliminate anyone abusing the system. Their reasons are not different from Afrihost.
All corporates have the same concerns.

If we where part of an service that was uncapped and unshaped - what would be the results:
1) The ISP would go bankrupt very soon.
2) All members would simply contend for the oversubscribes bandwidth and have a very unpleasant experience.
3) People with a reasonable expectation of the product would subsidies those without self control/respect for others.

Having said this, I think if any ISP took the trouble to implement more than just Radius accounting and actually provided per port usage tracking, it would soon become very clear what the data is actually been used for.

In my case I run Netflow collection on my home ADSL link(s).
I have an unlimited ADSL connection to work which runs 24/7.
I then have a 1 gig Telkom account.
And now I have a Uncapped (shaped) Afrihost account.

Once the 1 gig is capped, I split local and international traffic between the capped and uncapped.
This mean I have local uncapped via Telkom and international via Afrihost.

99% of the traffic is.. my son downloading movies which hits the Afrihost link.
I have since taken corrective action against him because asking him like an adult did not work.

I am a very heavy user with regard to work traffic but it's a very small portion of the total.
My son also is a gamer of note but this consumes 4-8gigs of local traffic per month.

The point I am trying to get at is people who are prepared to steal content (piracy) are not really concerned about stealing the bandwidth as well.

I would like someone to prove there is legitimate content being distributed via bit torrent.
If there is, it's a very small amount.

I know what I have implemented and am suggesting sounds like spying but it does expose the reality.
It also eliminates the "I was watching 60gig of Youtube clips" argument.
Some people will not like to hear this, most likely the same people using the most bandwidth, but it does show abuse for what it is.

Netflow by the way does not expose the content, only the protocol layer.

Gian, you have my sympathy for what you are trying to implement - good luck.

(awaiting flames)

Brilliant

Really guys, do you have to lengthen this threat with your petty games?

But I'm having so much fun :(

And lengthen what threat? As xrapidx implies, I'm terrible at reading, did I miss anything?

Yeah, I'm horrible at reading. At least I enjoy the little that I do read, though - the rest is just depressing.

It is hard to remain reasonable in the face of such stupidity, especially from a sock puppet, but please inform us how anyone can steal bandwidth on an uncapped account.

wogan, yes and thank you Mr spelling nazi, well done for taking a screenshot.

my post seems to have disappeared explaining my error. :/

There are quite clearly two sides to this - and we're not going to agree... so I guess its best for each side to just get on with life.

Gian has promised a refund to all who want it - so there's nothing really left to argue about - if you're happy with Afrihost, stay with them - if you're not, leave (and I hope you're man enough not to demand a refund for March).

Continually trying to convince the 'other side' you're right is going nowhere.... and pointless.

So I'm pretty much done with it.... if guys really want to continue with the really brave personal attacks from behind a computer screen to prove how 'manly' you are - by all means - maybe it'll impress your cybergirl named Biker Bob from Ohio weighing-in at 130kg of pure love.

There is some horrific irony in the very existence of the concept that such a book could be produced. What's even sadder is that I'm actually considering buying a copy :(

Back on topic - when can the actual Afrihost uncapped subscribers expect an email about this change? Or haven't the new softcaps been finalized yet?

@wogan, this all waits to be seen, I mean how long did it take to even get a response in the first place?
Although, judging by Gian's post, I think those are the finalised soft caps. 30gig is where it all starts it seems.

Damn I'm pissed off! Uncapped has turned into a **** ache! Now what? I'm a busy guy and don't have the time to be dealing with random annoyances like this. So email Gian request a refund then reactivate my DSL package with them (which I'm honestly not a 100% sure I want to do seeing how they changed their TC so quickly without notice) OR stick with them and the uncapped option hoping that a realistic bandwidth option might happen (wishful thinking? 200/100 gigs sounds reasonable) go with Mweb and hope that they wont do the same which they will in a matter of time right? Damn I hate getting pool poled in SA with bandwidth - Support the underdog and it bit me in the buttox.

R29 a gig x 30gigs = R870 - AH Pricing without specials
R16 a gigs x 30gigs = R480 - AH Uncapped throttled to hell option R497
Or go with another ISP?

Evidently not too busy, or you wouldn't have time to complain about it.

Long story short, xrapidx can count to two. Also, they're still finalizing stuff, so these softcaps will change again in the future.

Jitte you tannies are amazing, after a promise has been made to refund you for April and March you still continue to moan with your wet panties.
Move on already, go get yourself Mweb, Axxess or whoever you feel are more fair.

I would hate doing business with some of you, the term "get out and never enter this establishment again" comes to mind and I'm sure that at some point even the most gentle provider wished he never met some of you.

You are not going to get unshaped, uncapped, "unthrottled" accounts, no matter how you threaten and how many tantrums you throw. If you are not pleased, go away or go on with what you used before these offers came to light.

Man if I were Afrihost I would have blacklisted some people here and refused to have any further dealings with them in future, I will not stand for pathetic service, just like the next guy, but I also will not stand for pathetic hissyfit customers.
Everything has been sorted, the AUP has been updated and is now crystal clear and transparent, arrangements were made to refund you, if this was my company I would have just one more thing to say,
"Go away, I do not want your business anymore."

I just read the first page of posts.

Don't have time to read them all.

Can anyone/Gian say how this will affect the 384kbps lines?

will it also work on a ratio plan. So if i get to 30GB then my line drops to 125kbps? or something like that?

As i am on 384 i could never get to 120 GB anyway.

Would just like this to be cleared up thanks.

Could you PM me.

Thanks.

lord, I wish a mod would clean up this thread a little.

Anyway, thanks for clearing things up a little Gian. I'm afraid I'll have to cancel my account as I fall in the category of "power user", but I really appreciate the offer of the refund, and wish you all success with your venture in the future.

Gian said they still have to see what numbers come from the 384kbps user group to know what the limits will be.
