Official Afrihost Q&A Thread

Amid all the arguing, there are some questions that have been posed in this thread. Will Gian or another Afrihost rep please answer them.

And guys, please take the arguments elsewhere. If your post is not asking a question of Afrihost, it does not belong here.

Brilliant post and so true.

Gian has said they have messed up and apologised; he has offered unconditional refunds to people (who will have then enjoyed many free gigs); he has explained this is a work in progress and still people bring up the same old stories. What more do you want him to do - reasonably that is ??

I can think of one thing that he can do.... Change the name of the uncapped packages! the 4mb uncapped IS NOT, I repeat, IS NOT a 4mb uncapped account!

This is another point people miss. The mweb offering for business is over R2k p/m.

Afrihost do not mention "business" anywhere but from what some have posted, they are clearly conducting business over a R400 package and complaining it's not the same as a R2k service

Conducting business doesn't always necessitate business oriented service levels. Smaller businesses or services (SME's) can get away with the basics.

For instance, I sponsor internet connectivity for my neighbour (we're in two semi-detached houses on a plot) and he does freelance design and photography work which involves uploading a lot of image files to bureaus or client websites or spending all day trawling stock photo sites, etc. His girlfriend uses the link to send out mail to her clients (she's the instructor for the equestrian academy that is run on the plot), spends her time on Facebook and does her research, etc. I do remote support for clients (when necessary) or friends and family, via remote desktop or VPN applications.

We've been doing all this using between 10 and 20GB (depending on my budget to pay for top-ups). For the same price, uncapped made sense. Sure, the recent revelations regarding throttling, etc have been disappointing, but it's still better service than I had through Digichilli and as long as expectations are managed (ie. I inform them that we're going to be throttled if we go bossies on the link), everyone can get their slice of the internet pie and work and play to their hearts content.

I think the thread needs a moderator or an official forum needs to be hosted and moderated by Afrihost.

It's supposed to be a Afrihost official F.A.Q list.
This mean any post need to be a question or statement to the benefit of the community.

People have continued the conversation from the previous posts which Gian found difficult to follow and therefor started this.

It's now over 25 pages long and filled with personal conversation/attacks.

Gian is the only CEO I have ever heard of that personally responds on a forum so let show that some respect.

+1 There is so much scapegoating taking place here from both sides of the fence. We now need answers to questions bought up.

So.....what was your question?

HEH :D Just kidding

To stay within the framework I'll repost MY question.

Will the 384k uncapped have similar restrictions? What will those be?

The list of questions:

Please PM me and I will add your question to this list.

1) Will the 384k uncapped have similar restrictions? What will those be?

2) Some further clarity on how the AUP model will be applied

3) if i had to go into the 30 -60 gig bracket, will international gaming ports (specifically WOW ) be shaped ?

4) if i cancel my account will i still have my client zone login?

5) Lets say for 3 months, I don't have a lot of downloading to do, so lets say for 3 months, i never download more than 20GB's a month, now all of the sudden, i need [for whatever reason] to download 100GB in the 4th month, is it then fair to still throttle me? for 3 months i was way below your guidelines, but now because i need more for 1 month, im being punished?

6) Some of us are happy with the current offering but there is also demand for a day-shaped service with leniency at night. Will Afrihost consider adding an additional product like this similar to the ones offered by MWeb and others?

7) Is it not possible to have email notifications of downgrading of service? (e.g. i would like to be notified that my service will degrade to an xxxx kbps speed with a xxxx kbps minimum speed)

If you want to do that, I suggest you read through the thread and collate all the questions that have already been asked.

I agree, I find the behaviour towards the purpose of this thread to be downright embarassing. If the mods cannot clean up this thread I suggest we start a clean version to make it useful to us and Afrihost. Maybe post the list there.

I also would like to know about the 384k accounts but as Gian has stated they do not yet have a clear idea of what the usage patterns will be. I will thus be subscribing tomorrow and trust they can give us some feedback further on.

@hardwic: I have pm'd you an additional question. The question is:

Some of us are happy with the current offering but there is also demand for a day-shaped service with leniency at night. Will Afrihost consider adding an additional product like this similar to the ones offered by MWeb and others?

Does anyone know how the upgrading works?

I've been invoiced for my 5GB account for next month. If I upgrade tomorrow will Afrihost charge me R197 on top of that?

Gian will there be a change in accounting policy to accept other payment methods like other ISP's are providing or is it still not cost effective as stated by your accounts department and Moshe?

hi
if i had to go into the 30 -60 gig bracket and shaping gets more restictive will international gaming ports (specifically WOW ) be shaped ???
This is definately a dealbreaker for me .
thx .

repost need an aswer please,
will online gaming be more agressively shaped after 30 gig ??

Thanks Gian. This is actually a helpful guide. +1 to Afrihost for explaining things. Try get these facts and honest from any other ISP. They all got tricks up their sleeves to make this new "uncapped" service work. The one thing I still can not understand is why are most people bitching? We were all not happy with our 3gigs now we can use a lot more for a crap-load less but still the gripes come. We should be bitching about line-rental now! Imagine a SA with that demon abolished! Anyways please continue to moan below my comment.

P.S. I realise this is not true uncapped on most of the ISPs but things are getting better people :)

I would think shaping from 30-60 will impact on gaming as it affects everything except browsing... well, that was my experience anyway.

thx for the comment
Ill give it a month if the line is crap, or throttled before 30 gig the exodus will begin.

Canceled Afrihost, switched to MWEB (dislike them intensely - tx, Afrihost) - much better pings, browsing, streaming, etc. will check torrents...

Thank you VERY much for the open and honest post Gian..

It is a appreciated very much.

This account will suit most average internet users perfectly, but the power users not so much unfortunately.

*edit* I have stopped using my Afrihost account (even though you've removed the throttling) since this account won't suit my needs, and I think it would be unfair and unethical to suddenly start using an account that I no longer want simply because it can be abused for one more day.

I agree.

Good response.

And I can see it working for some people. The problem is the numerous other offerings priced exactly the same or less than AH, which do not seem to have such drastic throttling associated with them. I guess time will tell...

Hi there

Last night I had crazy response time from my afrihost account 120 ms compared to the normal 27ms and this was to a national address( ie warcraft server war3.co.za)
I have a prepaid account.
Now my question: Will this affect only international traffic or will the contest ratios be separate for local/international and for prepaid and uncapped?
