Official Afrihost Q&A Thread

Now the million dolla question is what is MWEB's policy? They doing the same?

Honestly I cannot see me hitting 60GB a month but I might sometimes.

A guy at work has hit over 300GB and no throttling or letter

I do not understand why Gian would make this thread with the title Q&A; when there is no A apart from the OP and another 1 or two choice responses. Honestly. It should read Afrihost Uncapped Announcement. My question: Is Afrihost ready to admit that this is a service that is shaped within in inch of its life, that is best meant for my gran to download windows updates (thank goodness they're on auto)?!

It was designed as a Q&A, but when everyone jumped in with their general comments rather than asking questions, you can't really expect Gian to keep up with things. A Q&A thread really needs to be closely moderated and general comments nuked, but that's not going to happen, which means we end up with what we have here.

Can you perhaps explain why we cannot connect with Afrihost ADSL during the past 8 hours or more?

I am sure there is no false notes in the money that we used to PAY Afrihost but when we want to use the Afrihost ADSL service it's down and therefore a part of the service that you offer is false.

You pay in cash with bank notes?

And my throttling just kicked in at 13.49GB since 1/4/10... A tad off the 30/60/90/120 rule innit?
So my 4096 runs like a 9600bps now yay

I would just like to ask about the whole number-locking thing. I'm not sure if it's been mentioned before in this thread, but since a search didn't pick up anything, I'll just ask and hope for the best: Why?

You've acknowledged that there is throttling after a certain amount of usage, so why is my account locked to, as the case may be, my parents' landline? I certainly don't intend to give my account to them when I leave. Surely I should be permitted to use my account when and where I see fit, so long as I'm the one using it?

Will I be able to request that the number it's locked to be changed without having to cancel and sign up again first? And how long will that take? It seems so pointless to me; not to mention an unnecessary hassle.

Gief me answers! Please? :)

Here is the reply I eventually got from Afrihost relating to my support ticket asking why I was being heavily shaped on P2P after hours (I am not on uncapped, btw):

Thank you for your email:)

Our accounts are semi-shaped during business hours; meaning priority will be given to services such as web browsing email.
You might experience slower speeds on other services such as torrents during business hours; but there is no shaping after hours.

Please can you let me know if you experiencing slow speeds with just downloading or is it with browsing and poping mail.

Thank you :)
Have a great day please feel free to let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Warm regards.

So I replied telling them that I was being shaped AFTER HOURS (which incidentally was clearly mentioned in my ticket). This is what they sent back:

I trust that you are well.:)

As per our server admin:

Please send this on to IS for verifaction that we are doing something
to P2P traffice.

Also note there are other ports on the netwrok which have higher priorty
in terms of fair usage. IE port 80 ( browsing ) will have higher
prioprity say over bit-torrent ports.

Have a great day please feel free to let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Warm regards.

So I wrote back asking what they are on about. They sent back this:

It was in connection with the slow speeds experience with P2P.

My response:
Did you receive any training in customer communications at all?

You’re not explaining why I am being throttled on P2P. I was downloading something P2P after hours. It’s not supposed to be shaped. At least not according to your website.

Like many others I am getting very concerned about the service Afrihost are giving me. I don’t expect this from you guys, I really don’t.

Oh, and to answer your question: I am not well. My internet service has gone from being great to being up to ****.

I await the next instalment with much interest.

I dunno. Am I being unfair on them? Is it too much to expect a clear and concise response to a customer problem that is written properly and actually solves the problem?

I've seen that support guy's name on other posted correspondence also revolving about poor communication and service. Perhaps someone at Afrihost should look into his communication skills before he chases customers away?

Gian sent me this reply when i emailed him about this.

Hi XXX

At the moment there is no way to change the phone number. However when the
time arises please send an email to us and we will change it for you.

Keep well and enjoy the rest of your long weekend!

Please let me know if I can be of any more assistance :)

Kind Regards

Careful now they might just slap you with the "Use the business account then"

Nope, I think ICASA needs to handling this matter, how were they allowed to state uncapped for 60 gigs? This is just ridiculous.

Wow, I'm really impressed at this - how it went from "graduated throttling" to "uncapped == 60gb" in a few short days. I'm sure you know that they don't cut you off after 60gb? You actually got the part where they talked about the higher throttle stages? Especially the part in the first post where it clearly says "You will never be capped"?

I'm fairly sure Afrihost will re-evaluate that once all the abusers have gotten annoyed and quit (if they even do - I get the feeling that everyone whines, but nobody actually does something drastic like cancel their account).

It's also incredible that you think ICASA would even want to get involved here - they're too busy piledriving the rest of the industry into the ground. If it weren't for ICASA we probably wouldn't even be having this conversation.

Of course, I'm not so much talking *to* you as *at* you, and I'm guessing the quality of your response will reflect that.

I still say a tiered bandwidth pricing would be much better for everyone, until the ISP's get to the point where there is enough bandwidth to not even need the thresholds or FUP.

Question: When will Afrihost sort out the authentication issues that everyone has been complaining about for a week or more now? And which we are still experiencing?

Check that you are using only PAP authentication. CHAP authentication isn't properly supported by Afrihost for some reason. Forcing your account to use only PAP should solve the authentication issues....well...it did for me anyway. :)

Gian there are many questions here to be answered and suggestions like the daily or weekly resets, which would keep people interested... can you please allocate someone to answer these if you can't. I would also suggest you delete any non-related Q/A posts...
