Recovery Mod & a2sd+

Hi Guys

Two part Question...

Device info:

HTC Desire GSM
S-Off via Alpha Rev
SD Card: 6543 MB Fat32, 1024 MB ext4
ClockWorkMod Recovery v5.0.2.0
Android 2.3.5 Oxygen 2.2.2 Rom

Question 1 (Recovery)

What is the best Recovery to use?
I see a lot of people on XDA have CM7 r2 in their sigs, what is this, how do I get that?
Is my current Recovery fine?
I had CWM AlphaRev 2.5.1.7/8 before I flashed my Recovery via Rom Manager. Was that a good idea?


Question 2 (a2sd+)

How do I get my apps 2 sd? (I know this is a noob Q)
Do I just go to "manage apps" -> "touch app" -> "touch move to SD card" OR
Do I use an app like a2sdgui OR
Should my ROM move it over automatically?

answer 1 - the recovery doesnt make much of a difference. some roms are coded in old scripting
then u might have an issue loading a rom
but for the most part u shudnt have a problem

when u see cm7r2 - its tell u about the paritition layout -
the type of rom u use will tell u what type to use
so if it says bravo stock..then when u chose your rom it shud say for stock hboot paritition

if it says cm7r2 then it uses that table.which normally u get more internel memory for apps


answer 2: some roms come with a2sd already included. u shud check the rom to find out - if its already included then u just install apps as normal and it automatically installs to the sd card( even tho it shows as on internel in app manager)
if theres no a2sd in the rom then u can try to use a2sd gui

moving the app to sd from application manager wont move the whole app.and eventually u might run out of memory

Helped a lot!! Was just busy reading about the hboots.

One question though. How do I load cm7r2 for instance?

Do I also download a zip and install via recovery? (Busy googling while I wait)

PS. Another thing I just read....

If I do use a different hboot like cm7r2, do I still need that manual ext partition on the sd card, or do I have to re-format Fat32?

Method via Recovery

Download the latest version of CyanogenMod.

Optional: Download the Google Apps for the device.

Place the CyanogenMod update.zip file on the root of the SD card.

Optional: Place the Google Apps .zip on the root of the SD card also.

Boot into the ClockworkMod Recovery.
Once the device boots into the ClockworkMod Recovery, use the side volume buttons to move around, and either the power button or the trackball to select.

Optional: Select backup and restore to create a backup of current installation on the HTC Desire (GSM).

Select the option to Wipe data/factory reset.
Then select the option to Wipe cache partition.
Select Install zip from sdcard.
Select Choose zip from sdcard.
Select the CyanogenMod update.zip.

Optional: Install the Google Apps by performing steps 7 - 9 again and choosing the Google Apps update.zip.

Once the installation has finished, select +++++Go Back+++++ to get back to the main menu, and select the Reboot system now option. The HTC Desire (GSM) should now boot into CyanogenMod.

Method via ROM Manager

Launch RomManager.

Optional: Choose the first option in the app, Flash ClockworkMod Recovery to update to the latest version.

Select the Download ROM option from the main menu in the ROM Manager.
Select the CyanogenMod option, and then choose the latest version of CyanogenMod from the menu.

Optional: When you select the latest version of CyanogenMod, check the Google Apps* option.

Once the ROM is finished downloading, it asks if you would like to Backup Existing ROM and Wipe Data and Cache.
If Superuser prompts for root permissions check to Remember and then Allow.
The HTC Desire (GSM) will now reboot into the recovery, wipe data and cache, and then install CyanogenMod. When it's finished installing it will reboot into CyanogenMod.

The Post as a whole is ofr 1st time, the section I quoted can be used after that. You can also use replace the update.zip portion with other ROM's

Example I use the recovery method to flash MIUI.us onto my Desire.

According to http://alpharev.nl/ HBOOT must be flashed via FASTBOOT.

I'm familiar with flashing roms, but not the HBOOT part.
 
I flashed alpharev by burning an iso to cd, and booting up my laptop with my phone plugged in. Easy peasy.

Still running it with MIUI.

I used http://unrevoked.com/#desire my 1st time, but back then I was on 2.2 dont know how it is now or if it will still work?

Instructions are simple:

* Download the version of Unrevoked for your OS from unrevoked.com
* Connect your phone to your computer via a USB cable
* If you are running Linux or Mac, you should be all set on the drivers; if you are running Windows, you need to install the drivers that come with the release (called HBOOT)
* Run the app and it should do the work after a single click

Think you guys missed the Bold part.

But mayurh answered the Q regarding CM7r2 <---- this is a HBOOT version that changes the partition tables, not a ROM, will let you know how to flash it.

Somehow I think I just broke my phone

For the life of me I can not boot into recovery anymore :(

This is what happens when its not your primary, and you have another phone already on order....

Update: For some unknown reason the dam phone went back to S-ON..... How the F did that happen!!!!
Oh well fixed and reflashed Clockwork recovery....

can u get into your rom?
go to settings power - and untick fastboot
then you should be able to boot into recovery

Naa that was not my problem, I was using some script to try activate a2sd. Was not in the mood to go do the whole partition thing and all.

After it ran and rebooted my phone like 5 times or so I noticed that the pink writing on HBOOT was gone, and I could not update recovery that was on the wrong version as per Rom Manager.

Rom manager refused to flash it and I could not boot into recovery as it just hung on a HTC white screen for 20 min's

Anyway its all fixed now and the script I ran is so badly deleted that not even the FBI would find it on my PC :)

Lesson learned: Do things the old fashion way and try and dont use "one click" wonders.

Has anybody figured out a way to get an afrikaan spellchecker intigrated? It's a year after i've gotten my phone and I still constantly have to correct its suggestions.

And it sucks that I mix afrikaans and english so ideally i'd need one that does both :/
 
You guys should check out an app called Wunderlist!

It really is pretty cool!
