Personally I like the CyanogenMod currently on CM 7 rc4 as for themes they have plenty that you can even install from the Android Market place

To start click here For themes look here. If you have Market Enabler running there is some paid for themes but allot of the free ones seems to do the trick just fine.
 
Those are ADW themes that you can use on any ROM that is running the launcher... But yes, CM7 is the best choice if you looking for a ROM to theme/customize.
 
So what's the latest software OTA update for the desire? I have't bothered messing with the roms.

I currently have 2.29.405.5

In regard to 2.2 you are on the latest, but the 2.3 based firmware is still with the SP's for testing cant give you a version number yet as its not released anywhere

I'm on 2.3.3 not LeeDrOid's but the stock, rooted & A2SD+. And for me it really is worth it. Its faster than ANY rom i've ever flashed before and the battery life seems good after one day of heavy use.

Where did you get the stock ROM from with A2SD+
 
Thanks Poffie. I took the plunge and installed CM7. I can get used to this. Busy installing google apps now. Could not understand why all the google stuff was gone at first :o
