ok - got my Desire, and would be loving it, but for one thing: when connected on Wifi - my Google Talk cannot log in, and (related to this) I can't download apps from the Market, and my Gmail is not pushed to my phone! It works fine when connected to mobile network, but that's expensive. This problems appears for heaps of people all over the web if I search, but nobody has a solution that works. Nobody else in SA experiencing this????

gmail is push
u have to go to gmail and refresh to get new mail it wont get it automatically unless u set in settings - sync - google accounts
not sure why your gtalk is not working , just try inputting your password and username again
and yes u will need ur data connection on if you want to use gtalk or gmail if there is no wifi available

MMS Failure on Vodacom

Need help with Vodacom settings MSS. Phoned client services not much help there and I am still not able to send or receive MMS’es. Get the following error messages Unable to send message – Generic network failure and Message not downloaded - Generic network failure - Can anyone help me?

Possibly your phone storage is full. If it is you won't receive email, and market downloads won't work. That doesn't explain the wifi - mobile discrepancy

Nice to see HTC getting the recognition they deserve. Sure, the Desire has perhaps already been surpassed by the latest crop of Android devices, but it sure as hell led the charge this year.

According to my friend who just got his, it should pop up a notification and let you update through the phone. Suggest you use wifi.

it had 2.1. joined androidza.co.za and found a step by step guide. the phone just got better!! for anyone looking to do the upgrade, follow these steps to the letter and you will be sorted.

Steps to install Froyo on HTC Desire

Step 1: Download the Android 2.2 firmware for the Desire from here http://liveimage.htc.com/OTA_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.09.405.8-1.21.405.2_release4dua3bcrut4wrv30.zip
Step 2: Rename the file update.zip and copy it to your microSD card via USB. [Note: make sure the file is named update.zip and not update.zip.zip.]
Step 3: Power down your Desire.
Step 4: Hold down the “Volume Down” button as you power the phone back on.
Step 5: A screen should appear showing your phone’s system searching for various files. Scroll down to “recovery” and press the “Power” button.
Step 6: When you see the triangle with an exclamation point symbol, press the “Power” and “Volume Up” buttons at the same time.
Step 7: From the menu that appears, select “Apply sdcard:update.zip.”
Step 8: When the screen displays “Install from sdcard complete” select “reboot system now” and wait for the phone to power back up

All i can say is be patient, mine took a while on the 'HTC' screen, but it will eventually get past that!"

Can confirm this, followed this guide from AndroidZA to upgrade to Froyo. 2.2, worked first time

My advanced task manager always shows Facebook, gmail open even after I ended them using the task manager.
They usually show up 5 mins after ending them & locking phone.
Any idea how stop them from restarting?

Hmm, not for me as with light use I can get it to last into the third day. I would suggest calibrating your battery - you'll find out how somewhere in the above 100+ pages.
Next, what apps are you running all the time? GPS, for example, will drain your battery in probably 3-4 hours.
Calibrate, shut down unnecessary apps and then see.

Do yourself a huge favor and just get chargers everywhere... I use my phone very heavily and I would not get half a day with one charge. Tried everything and failed. Make peace with the fact that you chose a high end awesome phone, with all the great stuff it can do, and charge whenever possible. I also tried the battery calibrate thing, ran task managers, set the brightness down to 30%, never played games on it, used a black wallpaper, all that crap. In the end it was just spoiling the capabilities of my phone and I just gave up and bought a extra charger, and a car charger, best decision ever!

im considering getting a desire. just wondering what the average data usage is per month? i'd appreciate it if i could get a few different scenarios - like xMB per month when facebook and twitter is off, yMB per month when everything is on, zMB per month with this on, that off, heavy browsing etc. etc.
