Did you load the Gigenbread Oxygen yourself?, i want to Root the thing but im afraid i will fark the phone up big time, i probably don’t need Gingerbread, its not giving me any hassles/problems whatsoever, i just really like having the latest version when it comes to software, and after HTC told us how great/smooth and fast the new 2.3 is, it’s like telling a kid how nice the candy is, soooo much better than anything you are used to, and they WILL give you some if you behave and then the kid behaves and does not get the candy :P
If I had any problems with this phone I would have CPA their @sses for false advertising, but then what….. :(
 
Rooting the Desire isn't that difficult. You just need to make sure you have the correct USB drivers installed on your computer, and then you run a program called Unrevoked (which you can download here) which does the rooting process for you.

Once you have root access, you can install ROM Manager from the Android Market, which will flash the latest version of Clockworkmod Recovery. You can now use the recovery console to do a full system backup, restore the system from backup, or load a custom ROM from a zip file on the SD card.

There are three main flavours of ROMs to choose from:

1. AOSP (ie. vanilla Android)
2. HTC Sense
3. MIUI (iPhone-style interface)

If you like AOSP, it's mainly a choice between Oxygen and CM7. Oxygen is very clean and light and and almost completely stock Android. CM7 has a lot of hacks and customisations for people who really like to tweak their phone.

If you prefer to stick with HTC Sense, I've heard that InsertCoin is generally considered to be the best Sense ROM for the Desire at the moment. It incorporates lot of the advanced features from Sense 3.0 on the HTC Sensation.

I don't know much about MIUI, so I can't help you there I'm afraid.

Thanks for the reply and trouble of explaining it to me, but i would rather not do it myself, that guys clearly warns you can "brick" your phone and i don’t want to take the chance, if it was a computer i would have formatted the sh@t out of it, but when it comes to phones im kinda sceptical, and the thing is if i brake this phone i will have to use my Nokia 6680 for another 5 years :( , if anyone reading this thread does this for a living or a past time or whatever, please PM me you contact details and what you will charge me and we can make a plan

have you ever had that feeling of really being excited about something, then being led down, and then being told they only joking, that’s the sensation im going through now
if it Gingerbread does happen, then my reply will be HEEELLLLL YEAH!!!, if not, please stop playing with my feelings woman!!!

Pity you live in the wrong "country" else I would have said just swing past my house, I'll show you how easy it is.

It would be very hard to brick the phone, well if you follow the instructions its almost impossible. That said most problems can be recovered by just re-flashing the rom you want.

haha, ja no it is a pity, i used to work in PE, wished i could have stayed there, really a lovely place
Well let’s see if the Gingerbread gets released (as per previous post), if not i will probably not have a choice...
 
My take would simply be that the word BRICK, probably in big, scary red letters, really isn't all that scary. It might have been initially, but as long as you follow the instructions over on XDA to the letter you'd probably stand a better chance to win the lottery than bricking your phone. There were many, many instances just after launch but like the ROMs themselves the processes have matured and are now just about idiot-proof.

That being said, don't come crying here if you do brick your phone. :p

Don't be a pansy and root already :)

There's probably a higher chance of dropping your phone in the toilet than bricking it.

But if HTC does a 2.3 update, is it really worth Rooting the device?, even if they don’t, does it really make that huge difference?

Do a search on the benefits of rooting.

Also consider your phone will work better, and have increased functionality.

And you'll never have to wait for an update.

I rooted for market access, and desire space issues. Market access is no longer an issue.

What I like about custom roms, besides above.

Google turn by turn navigation enabled.
Screen grab possible.
Non market approved goodies work.
Much much faster phone.
Custom auto brightness.
It's almost a new phone with every new rom.

Rather flash to a UK ROM, we always get things late, the X10 is to get 2.3 next week but SE SA said the SA X10s will get it in Q4, so i said f***k it, and flashd to a Nordic ROM.
If im not mistaken its the same with the Galaxy-S as well.
