Official ICC World T20 thread

More than just JP's lacklustre batting, we batted rather strangely - we allowed the bowlers to dictate to us - even Kallis allowed this. When Umer Gul was putting in yorker after yorker, we should have been coming down the track, standing 3 metres out of our crease, moving around before he bowled etc, to mess with his line and length. Instead, we just sat back and allowed him to do his thing. I don't get it...

Oh there is!

CHOKERS!

:D

honestly, i don't think we choked. i think we were outplayed.
afridi and gul (sp) were brilliant and won the game for pakistan.

we could have done more early on but we always seem to leave things
for the last over. i think we need to except that we don't have a zulu to bail us out, no matter how good morkel or boucher are...

Seriously? I thought we had an indifferent bowling performance and the fielding was shocking. We did bat too slowly but we should have had them for 15 - 20 runs less.

When 3 batsmen get strike rates of 130 or more for in more than 3 overs then obviously the bowling side didn't perform. And why were our spinners so useless on a turning wicket?

SA were by far the form team in this tournament (even in the IPL our players were amongst the top performers in most of the teams). In sport, the form team is the team who should win the big matches. Once again SA didn't do it.

Here's another thing:
South Africa scored under 5 an over in 6 overs! That is less than a run a ball in 6 overs. The worst of it is SA scored 3 or less in 4 overs! In twenty20 cricket, that just doesn't fly. A form team just shouldn't let that happen.

SA cannot win when it matters because we do not have a care free attitude, we do not back ourselves to go win big matches. We always become too cautious instead of throwing caution to wind.

The aussies are so good because they do not go into big games not thinking what if we lose, they go in and back themselves to win.

Look at afridi when they went 2 down he still played shots, they never let up and looked positive, we go 3 down with the run rate still manageable and then we block and run singles until the run rate became impossible.

we could go back and forth with this but i'm just not in the mood today :(
i was 16 sitting with my dad watching the semi final of the world cup 10 years ago, i felt so horrible after we lost because i really thought we could make it!, and 10 years later i feel that same dissapointment again. there's alot of things we could have done better but that doesn't matter now, pakistan are through to the final and we labelled chokers again.

the only redemption for us now is to win a major tournament.
icc champions trophy is in september in SA so thats our next chance.

:D

Poor Proteas lol!!
You beat Scotland, New Zealand, England, West Indies and an Indian team that had nothing but pride to play for...

Still pretty poor if you ask me.:)

Id like to know how the Proteas approached this game?
Did they think Gul was going to be easy? Ajmal? Afridi?
3 of the best bowlers in this tournament, 12 overs between them. Smithers had no plan!! They didnt attack Razzak(WTF was up with that guy? He looked like he was drugged up!!!!!) they should have went for Amir, hes 17 if you hit him for boundaries early in the over you can mess him up... Protea batsmen have so much respect for the lightie hehehehe...
Younis the clown even gave away 15 runs by throwing in that Fawad guy...
Gul dropped Smithers, Akmal dropped De Villiers....

:)

Yeah but our record is beyond that... We have choked in so many semi finals now that I think we've now basically cemented it in place :(

London, Jun 19 (PTI) South Africa are "chokers" and they continue to provide evidence that the tag is not given to them without reason although skipper Graeme Smith begs to differ.

For all the right words, sane and sanguine thinking and public posturing, skipper Smith did let it slip when he conceded his side would be "devastated" by yesterday's seven-run defeat at the hands of Pakistan in the first semifinal of the Twenty20 World Cup.

This crushing sense of loss of so many reverses -- 1996, 1999, 2003 and 2007 World Cups; the roadblocks of Champions Trophy and now two successive ICC World Twenty20 - must have taken a toll on the Proteas cricketers' psyche.

Other occasions too come to mind in an instant: losing the semifinals of the ICC Knockout Trophy in 2000; two years later losing to India in the semifinals from an astonishing position and then semifinalists again in 2006 edition of the ICC Knock Out Trophy.

Words alone don't provide cure -- correctives do but South Africa, since its readmission into the game in early 90s, has only been a bridesmaid or worse.

Choking, according to a research, comes from thinking too much. It causes a loss of instinct and panic sets in. It happens when a sportsman experiences spasms of doubt and is unable to focus. Negative thoughts unleash anxiety and a player loses his ability to perform under pressure. The result is disaster. PTI

Sorry to say but it seems the Proteas just don't have BMT

We proved again that we are the still the undesputed World Champion Chokers.

BTW. Are our players getting a little wide round the middle (Smith, Boucher, Kallis) ?
No wonder they miss-fielded.

As I said, I don't believe Kallis is a team-player. More interested in his own player stats than anyone else.

BS. Please go and look at his strike rate and yesterday he was the only batsman to make us look better than we really were....

To be fair we timed the innings to almost pin point perfection, that's if we were aiming to hit the winning runs off the last ball. It was a close game and I don't think the early loss of Graeme, Gibbs and AB was the fault of Kallis or JP yet they had to consolidate the middle of the innings. It was on the brink of collapse when JP came in..

Yeah but we should have started having a bit of a slog 2 overs earlier. We knew Gul still had to bowl and that one over of his killed us... 5 balls in the blockhole, barring a lucky edge those balls would never have been hit to the boundry.

Like one of my friends said yesterday, its of no use to have 5 or 6 wickets in hand in the last 3 overs. IMO they should have sent in Albie not Duminey as Albie is a better boundry hitter.

Close game i do not think needing 82 off 48 deliveries is close, only then did kallis think ok maybe we need some hits.

Kallis is about stats not the team, he has shown me that in many 50 over games by destroying our run rate. Yes fine consolidate but when the run rate is 10 an over the time for farking consolidation is long gone and the time for smashing the ball has entered the fray.

IF (I know I know) Gul did not bowl that "magic" over we could have done it but he bowled brilliantly 5/6 balls un-hitable and the other one slightly of target.

/puts jk8 on one-week ignore

To everyone who's suggesting that they should have just hit the ball, do you honestly think that didn't occur to them? How do you propose the hit the ball when it's landing in front of your toes delivery after delivery?

We were beaten by a team that just out-played us.

+1 On the day we did suck a bit but I still believe we should have planned the batting better. Morkel > Duminey when we need boundries.

That's actually a bit of a fallacy, he has one off the best run rates in 50 over cricket in the team..

Thank you someone that actually keeps up with the players stats. IMO Kallis was very good yesterday and he has nothing to feel ashamed of.

Problem is kallis watches his stats as well as you guys, so now they look nice with his score but we still lose.

Nobody here is saying kallis was poor we are saying that both him and duminy needed to hit the ball from the 13th over and not continue the single/block fest, kallis was set he should have been the one to start hitting but no push singles ahhhhh.

We had 7 wickets in hand from the 12th over and in all honesty duminy and kallis acted like they were our last hope. We had power to come instead we watched duminy and kallis pushed singles till the 16th over while albie had been sitting waiting for many overs to come and smash some balls.

By staying in and pushing singles both kallis and duminy destroyed our run rate beyond repair, i am still amazed when the run rate hit 12 they still pushed singles as if we were on track to win

Kallis made us look good yesterday. Gibbs/AB/smith/duminy/albie all failed. Even Botha had a had day at the office.

If those players had fired we would be sitting pretty now. Its really that simple.

Overall though, we had a great tournament.

Albie did not fail, you need half a chance to come off, he never got it

gibbs AB and smith at least went out swinging and looking positive, far more than can be said of the 5 day pair

Anyways SA and world cup final seems words we may never hear so anyways good tournament as you say.

Watching us bat was heart-wrenching to say the least. I seriously don't mind being outplayed and losing - but the fact that JP and Kallis were stuck as if they were playing test cricket is what pissed me off.

I bet there are lots of really happy bookmakers on the sub continent this morning... ;)

(even in the IPL our players were amongst the top performers in most of the teams). .

Yusuf Abdullah (sp) was prob one of the best bowlers in the ipl, more wickets than Kallis or any other S.A bowler and they benched him throughout the Tournament (WTF????)

I agree with those that say Kallis is for himself. He is a great cricketer, but it is gone to his head. You can see this when he walks onto the field, arrogant *&^%!!

PS: best part of the game, was when Kallis decided to chirp Afridi, the Afridi wacks him for 3 four's and blows a kiss to him ............beautiful!!!

Lol
Exactly!!!
They did it now to Abdullah, he could have played the game against India, hes new not a conventional player like the others. He can bat.
They benched Bodi in the last 20twenty WC aswell.
The proteas have always been predictable, so if a team studies them they bound to fail. Pakis had two new bowlers and they pulled it off.

Lol I was ripped when Afridi blew Kallis a kiss hahahahahahaha!!!!
Dont blame Kallis hes score was perfect, Duminy did well. Smithers and De Villiers are getting away scot free, they did nothing. Gibbs has his bad days...

And not for the 1st time, either.

/sigh

Well duminy and kallis did nothing as well, they never helped us, got good scores but never helped. When you let a run rate get too 12 before deciding to play shots you may as well have gone out for a duck!!!!!!!

I would rather they went out like the others than played 5 day cricket.

Yea that kiss was awesome from afridi, pity it did not make kallis want to destroy their attack.
