Official ICC World T20 thread

Someone needs to show duminy and kallis how to slog because they have no clue, why do i need to play for SA to see why we lost devil?

We had four wickets down at the end? does that sound right for a team chasing a total that loses? that sounds like we won easily. So say what you like but be honest and say duminy and kallis never looked like taking on the bowlers until it was too late.

12th over 7 wickets in hands, the next 3 overs singles and more singles and not one big shot offered by either? explain devil. Only 3 down with big hitters to come why did they act like the run rate was not 10 an over?

Why was no effort made to hit boundaries till it was too late? Why did we not make the bowlers think we may step out and smash them, we stood still and let them bowl great deliveries, their bowlers had no worries because all we wanted was singles not boundries so yea keep bowling that line because they won't try anything but singles

nope we allowed them to hit their area's, we played defensive which meant their bowling looked great, we never attemped to move around, double step, nothing.

Stand and deliver will always make the bowling team look good as will playing defensive cricket, we fail all the time because we would rather lose playing defensive than lose playing positive attacking cricket

I think the answer is a bit of both.

What probably stopped us from working the situation optimally (eg 7 runs short) was the added pressure of the occasion, coupled with the ridiculously partisan crowd.

We felt under extreme pressure throughout the game. The crowd played a very big part.

In that sense we did choke a little. But everything has to be seen in context.

Our players are human, even the All Blacks understand this. Normally we are a very good side. On the day we were just good, and Pakistan was very good.

No we beat ourselves by once again playing our famous not wanting to lose game.

Losing by 8 runs seemed close but in reality it was far from close.

Yes because gul did not bowl 5/6 balls in the one over in the blockhole.....

Look killa I am sure you can slog even shane warne but good bowling it was...

Maybe you should go and show them how its done, you play for a nattional side don't you?

I agree with you Devill, glad to see someone thats giving credit to the bowlers, they were world class!!
I doubt many batsmen in the world would have done well in the same situation.
the problem is the Proteas should have known playing Gul and Afridi was never going to be easy even if they were ahead of the run rate!

They had to attack the other bowlers.

Nice work from Younis, he kept all the strike bowlers for the last 10, Gul only bowled 3 overs...

Because those who can't do cry the loudest. They could not have hit boundries off that over of gul.... NO MATTER WHO THEY ARE.

I agree 100% but also having 2 new batsmen at the crease is sill when chasing 10 an over so yes Duminey should have had a slog, kallis was keeping the innings together WHILE going along at a brisk enough rate.

Go watch the replays.

Kallis played the big shot got a six, next over tried another bigshot and went OUT. I say AGAIN: Duminey should have gone for it kaliis was going along well enough.

ROFL, I would love to see you play against even the Sa u/16 opening bowler and "smash" him... now you want to crit. them for not being able to "smash" the best bowler in the tourney?

Can see you know lots and lots about cricket..... Maybe send in your CV and you can be the next player-coach-manager.

PLS READ THIS KILLA

For the third time I am going to say this, we fscked it up, yes, BUT Kallis is not to blame, he did the right thing. DUMINEY should have gone for it earlier.

One misfield by Smith went for 4 and I think another another misfield by Albie went for 3. 4+3=7:(

I'll agree with with you later Devill.
But I'm still pissed off and don't want to listen to reason. :o

Afridi was brilliant though, he's won quite a few games for Pakistan in his career. A 1 in 50 innings from him.

OzzieCapie - you inadvertently proved my point about Kallis playing for stats - being the highest run scorer and all. What use are these stats when we got knocked out of the tournament? Also most world-class batsmen would be able to get a similar amount of runs to Kallis if they prodded singles and the odd four throughout the innings. I noticed during the England game, that as usual, he was playing in his own little world - 57 off 50 balls, which is good, but not good enough for 20/20.

And no, I don't think Duminy should be playing the attacking role. It was Kallis who should've done that since he is more experienced and was better form than Duminy. Yet he continued to prod singles, despite the required run rate jumping from 8 to 11/12/per over. (Also let's say for hypothetical purposes, Duminy was meant to play the attacking role - why didn't Kallis tell him to attack? They were BOTH playing granny cricket). How come Afridi had such a strike rate? It's because he ATTACKED the bowlers - I don't think our bowling was that bad - while our batsmen were prepared to let the bowlers dictate terms. Yes Umar Gul was great, but he only came on in the 13th over. We had around 10 overs (between 3rd and 13th) to build a nice run rate, yet the Proteas let Afridi take over them. Also in 20/20, you need to improvise your shots - if they bowling yorkers, come down the pitch a bit and turn it into a full toss.

If we had to replay that game ten times over, afridi's antics would have seen him out early. He got lucky.

You think so? IIRC, he wasn't dropped or anything. If anything, Pakistan gave us more chances - completely messing up Smith's catch and dropping AB De Villiers first ball.

Pitty he had to have that 1 innings against us :(

But it was ours to lose :o

O well ICC CT around the corner :) Think with this team we are gonna rock in the ODIs!

Errr he walked in the tournament with a strike rate of 188!!!
Its a game, hes a professional, they all have their bad patches.
Gayle hasnt scored since his first innings, if he scores today will he be lucky?

Afridi has been one of the best in this format of the game for years now...
Go have a look at his stats before you say he got lucky!!!

Something the boys could have tried at the end but nobody was willing was the dilshan or lap shot against gul. Fine leg was up and he was bowling full, hitting down the ground wasn't working. So I am wondering why no one tried it?? Surely it was worth a try??

He is not going to Devill....thanks for seeing the obvious.

He has the highest runs etc etc because he is playing the best and therefore it follows that his stats are the best. His stats against evrybody else proves that he was the best SA batsman in the tournament. What more do you want the bloke to do.

The batsman with the highest score in the innings especially if opening, is the only person entitled to bat slower than the average required run rate.

What did Kallis do? You know the stats, you say he plays for them?

Required RR (net of extras)*:
v Pakistan: 113...Kallis 118, rest of batsmen 94
v England: 93....Kallis, 116 rest of batsmen 88
and highest score in both innings.
* the RR is lower because I have deducted the extras..otherwise apportion the extras pro rata and the RR's of all are higher...no difference.

Then you say "the odd four":

v Pakistan: Kallis 7 fours 1 six, rest 5 fours 1 six
v England: Kallis 5 fours, 1 six, rest 4 fours 1 six

Total boundaries:

Kallis is second on list, 28 fours and 4 sixes =32 , 3 behind Dilshan.

Next SA batsmen are:
De Villiers 22, Smith 22, Gibbs 14, Duminy 7, Morkel 6 what????
...would you guys have thought it was like this just from memory...or did you need the stats to show you.

So the problem is apparently still Kallis, because everybody knows he doesn't have to slog/sweep or reverse sweep etc all those stuff you remember, but those batsmen don't contribute.
People don't remember runs hit in the correct fashion even if the batsman scores the fastest or the most.

Killadoob and Chris et al, mates...there is so much logic here I could give you more, but it seems your minds are made up because of the type of character he is supposed to be.

Look through the results and be thankful that he was there...for without him it would be a bleak picture.

cheers:)

ps build the bloody guy a statue;)

+1

Sometimes I wonder why Kallis didnt do a KP, and go play for the Poms

Kallis did his job. He batted nearly through like he is suppose to. The other batsmen around him needed to lift the temp but failed. Kallis and most of the bowlers can hold their heads high. The other batsmen need to go and have a rethink.

Thank goodness someone else also seems to know a little something about cricket.

Ps Chris if Kallis is playing for his stats he will be playing great because in T20 its all about the strike rate and scoring 30 + ... Please wake up :)

+1 The fielding was a bit slack though.
