I'm not convinced that he actually made real contact, but it was a ridiculous challenge nonetheless. Was always at risk of a penalty the moment he lunged...

Yeah, not the smartest tool, is our Tom. Definite penalty though, he didn't make a tackle as such but he impeded the run by blocking Johnson off.

He has lost do much dynamism since his injury it isn't funny.

Not by a long shot. Manchester United is one of the most, if not the most marketable sport's teams in the world. Forbes has listed them as the most valuable football team in the world in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 & 2012, and 2nd most valuable last year. Then there are those sponsorship deals already in place. Chevrolet, $559 million over 7-years, which smashes every shirt sponsorship deal in football.
No Champions League will hurt, but their income from other avenues will hardly see them struggling for money. Their financial empire won't collapse after one bad season. This is still Manchester United, a footballing & business empire, and times are very different to the pre-Premier League days when Liverpool were gods.
