In all the years I have supported NUFC with my hard earned, and I have been through the inepititude of Lord Westwood, the limp fish McKeag, the failed glory of Hall and his Geordie promise, the overspending of Fat Freddie Shepherd, the slagging of suppoerters from Shepherd and Hall, not to mention calling our women "dogs", relegation and resurection with Ashley, and now it looks like I am going to have to put up with a senile Irish Cockney with a dodgy ticker. I'm late in logging in today but 2 hours ago another friend said he'd had word that there were developments coming out of Newcastle today and there will be 2 departures.... so Llambias is the the first one, if the other one is Graham Carr I'm done.

Joe Kinnear believes his managerial experience puts him "head and shoulders above" any other director of football in the English game.

Kinnear, 66, recently agreed a three-year contract to become Newcastle's director of football – an appointment that was heavily criticised by fans.

The former Wimbledon manager has begun work on the club's summer recruitment strategy, which is likely to include a renewed bid for Saint-Etienne striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, considered the Magpies' first choice target this summer.

And Kinnear believes his role – and, more importantly, his experience – will be vital in helping Newcastle to achieve success.

"Every top club in the land has got one [a director of football]," he told the Shields Gazette.

"We haven't – that's the difference. The manager can't do everything. I'm probably the only football manager to be a director of football. I don't know any other ex-managers who have.

"I've been a manager for 35 years. I've been Manager of the Year. I've won every award there is in football as a player. I think all those qualities put me head and shoulders above every other director of football."

The last time Newcastle employed someone to deal specifically with player recruitment - Dennis Wise, whose official job title was 'executive director (football)' - his presence led to a row that resulted in manager Kevin Keegan's resignation.

However, Kinnear is adamant that his decades of experience in the game make him the ideal man to work alongside manager Alan Pardew at St James' Park.

"Some directors of football have never played the game," he added. "I'm lending my experience as a manager for all those years – ten years at Wimbledon, two years at Nottingham Forest, two years winning promotion at Luton and, of course, almost two years at Newcastle. I would still be there had it [a heart attack] not occurred."

Other Premier League clubs to employ a director of football include Manchester City (Txiki Begiristain) and Tottenham Hotspur (Franco Baldini).

For a man who "can pick the phone up at any time of the day and speak to any manager in the league in all the divisions", Kinnear has a remarkably poor knowledge of who's in charge at all these clubs. Mediawatch would have assumed that Peterborough's director of football (and ex-manager) Barry Fry would be a natural bedfellow of Kinnear's, even if Crawley's Steve Coppell does not move in the same comedy cockney circles. Kinnear may also remember that both Kenny Dalglish and Harry Redknapp have had spells as Directors of Football and we seem to remember them as occasional managers. But who are we to nit-pick? Well, we're dedicated nit-pickers obviously...

To be fair, Kinnear won a fair few things as a player - two League Cups, an FA Cup and a UEFA Cup. No league title, no World Cup, no European Cup, no Conference North, but he did say 'award' rather than 'trophy', so presumably he must have won the Ballon D'Or, the PFA Footballer of the Year and possibly a BAFTA, right? Erm. What do you think?

Or, alternatively, seven years at Wimbledon, 11 months at Nottingham Forest, two years winning promotion (after initial relegation) at Luton and, of course, almost five months at Newcastle.

Mediawatch is painfully reminded of the time Granddad Mediawatch belted out 'Do Your Balls Hang Low?' in the doctor's waiting room. He was given medication rather than a Director of Football job.

:wtf: either Mike Ashley is being blackmailed by Kinnear or he's on crack. It's the only logical conclusion I can come to.

West Ham coughed up 15 million for him so not all is lost. You guys have also signed some quality to add to the recent [and decent!] acquisitions of Coutinho and Sturridge. The future's looking bright on the red side of Liverpool.

Arsenal are apparently haggling over £400k for Higuain and are now sniffing around Gareth Barry. Now there's two good reasons to cry :o

I've always had a 'soft spot' for NUFC so feel a little of your pain. They're a sleeping giant imo but the owner seems hellbent on making them the laughing stock of the EPL. Pity...
