Official PS3 Discussion/News Thread - No bashing!!

So ModNation Racers downloaded nearly a gig of updates. I looked up why, and load times have been decreased by 30% and the super hard AI has been fixed. Those were my only gripes about the game. Awesome!

Will download the update this weekend and see if it helps it.
PS3 really needs an "install to hard drive" option.

Anybody play FIFA 11 online? I have a 384 line, not sure if it'll work properly

Yeah it works ok. I have 384 uncapped on mweb. The experience obviously depends on your latency so do some pingtests before trying to play.

Sorry for this stupid question but I'm curious about the online gaming option in PS3. I'm about to buy one, with GT5, and apparently I will be able to race online against other users? How do I connect my PS3 to the network? I have a laptop and I use a spare cellphone as 3G modem to connect to the internet, will that be of any use or does the PS3 have it's own built-in modem? Please help...! Thanks

all i know is GT5 is awesome online! I have 384k line and was impressed at the lag-free gameplay!

Now if only KONAMI took a page out of that book and sorted out the PES11 servers...again! PES online sucks!

After having just done the online setup, etc myself, I can maybe share a few words ;) :
1) The PS3 does NOT have its own built in modem. It can connect to a network via LAN cable, or via wireless.
2) Given the devices that you mention, you'll need to connect your laptop to the internet through your phone, however you may do that (if you don't know, now's about a good time to google :) ). But I'm assuming that you do already know how to do this step.
3) Once connected to the internet on your laptop, you'll need to share your internet connection. This depends on your operating system - another google session if you don't know how... its pretty simple, and I've done it in both Ubuntu and CentOS :) - shout if you need some assistance...
4) Once the internet connection is shared, go over to the console, and ensure that the LAN cable is plugged in. I personally tried the wireless setup, but couldn't establish a connection to my wireless router, even though the router was sitting right next to the PS. So i gave up and just plugged in the LAN cable...
5) On the Playstation menu, you'll need to navigate to System Settings, Internet Settings (or something like that - don't have in front of me at the moment), and ensure that the option "Allow Connection to Internet" (or something similar) is set to "ON". Then select the Internet Settings, and proceed through the setup of the connection to the network. I happened to leave everything set to "automatic/default" which worked for my network, but if you have your network setup in a particluar way, then now the time to enter those details.
6) After all of that, a connection test will be performed, and if successful, then you can access the internet from your PS3... Now simply sign up!

Thats from what I remember... but its very simple - took all of 5 minutes to setup. Once you're setup and have a sign-in account, then after loading the game and launching it, there should be an option to sign in/play online. Use that option, and go play against some real people :D

Online Gaming

Thanks for the advice, wishblade. Hoping to buy my system before Christmas and will try this out. Any indication on how much data you use during online gaming? I suppose it's a lot, loading all the graphics? Will have to start buying bigger data bundles on my simcard every month :)

On average, my online play ranges from 1 gig to 1.2 gigs. And that's every weekend till late, with some week play.

yeah, sorry can't help with the data usage stats... haven't really actually played much online yet. Will look at giving it more attention once the company closes for the holidays... and after the christmas travelling and all...

well, about 4 or 5 posts up is a general guide to setup... but by "troubleshoot" I guess you've tried (or had previously working) something and now there's a problem. Best way to get advice then is to follow these steps:
1. Was it previously working?
1a. If yes, what changed since then?
1b. Or if no, what have you tried?
1bi If nothing has been tried, read the steps in the posts previously, and then if you get stuck, start at the beginning of this post again.
1bii If you have tried something, post the point at where you get stuck.

This helps us a bit in understanding where you are in your setup process, which helps you to get assistance quicker... ;)

If the TV have the normal RCA red/white/yellow inputs then you should be ok. You do get the right cable to use with the PS3.

Just got my PS3, was difficult to decide which console to choose, but the blueray did it for me. I got the fifa 11, killzone 2 and some other rally type of game with mine. I would really want a scolling space shooter dodging game, if someone can recommend one that would be much appreciated. I am also considering getting god of war, the games I got with mine isn't really my type.

DOnt really understand this?
Get the GOW 3 as long as you have played 1 and 2, if you haven't then buy the PS3 version of them.
