Sony at long last dates the release of its open beta for anticipated social networking service
The open beta of PS3 Home will be made available to all PS3 users from tomorrow (December 11th), SCEE has announced.

The open beta will include Ubisoft’s themed Far Cry 2 Home space, with additional spaces for Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, Warhawk, Motorstorm and SOCOM on the way shortly. Commercial partnerships have also been announced with brands such as Diesel, Ligne Roset and Red Bull. Users can also expect a heavy presence for the upcoming Watchmen movie, including an exclusive video greeting from the movie’s director Zack Snyder.

“PlayStation Home is truly a promising network community service on the PlayStation platform, made possible with the powerful combination of PS3's overwhelming computational power and PlayStation Network that covers many countries around the globe,” SCE president and group CEO Kazuo Hirai stated.

“We are committed to providing PS3 users with exciting gaming experiences with PlayStation Home and together with our partners and users, expand the new world of interactive entertainment as we move forward.”

Dubbed as a ground-breaking 3D social gaming community, Home allows users to interact with each other and communicate via their on-screen avatars.

Valante should know, he was in the beta.

I'm officially amped for this.

HEXUS TV launches onto Playstation Home
Sony has today announced that its PlayStation Home Beta service will launch tomorrow, December 11, 2008 and HEXUS is proud to announce that it'll have its own area within the virtual space. After downloading the open beta from the XMB crossbar, you'll be able to find all the best HEXUS.tv content in the Playstation Home Theatre.

HEXUS.tv will bring all of its best content to two screens in the Playstation Home Theatre. Screen One will focus on in-depth technology content, bringing the latest news in the industry in the form of interviews and product focus, whilst screen two will focus on Lifestyle content, where we take a light-hearted approach with plenty of fun content, including walkthroughs of the latest gadgets.

The shows will be updated regularly with Nick and the team providing unique content that you won't see anywhere else! Be sure to check us out and let us know what you think!

The PlayStation Home beta will see the launch of a 3D social gaming community that allows users to interact, communicate and share gaming experiences. Users can create and customise their own unique avatars and explore the virtual community in real time where they can communicate through text or voice chat. They'll also be content such as mini-games, videos, special events and themed environments.

Users will be able to experience basic features and services of PlayStation Home, free of charge*.

Check out the press release for full details:

For users accessing PlayStation Home in the Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) regions, themed virtual environments will be available to explore. Starting with a themed Far Cry 2 space, PlayStation Home will offer game inspired environments that allow people to discuss the specific games, plan strategies and access content and clues that will enhance the gaming experience. The number of gaming environments such as this will regularly increase, with spaces for Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, Warhawk, Motorstorm and SOCOM following very soon. SCEE is working with leading publishers such as: Electronic Arts, UBISOFT, Midway, Sega and Atari to create engaging environments that will provide users with an on-going gaming experience.

SCEE today also announced the first partnerships with some of the world’s most respected lifestyle brands for the Open Beta. Fashion leader Diesel, contemporary furniture designers Ligne Roset, energy drink Red Bull, film studio Paramount Pictures and video content providers Hexus TV and Eurogamer are the first on board. They will offer resident’s virtual clothing for their avatar, virtual furniture for their PlayStation Home apartments, exclusive video content and a virtual flying challenge: the Red Bull Air Race.

Visitors and residents will be able to explore PlayStation Home with their avatar character and, thanks to Diesel, avatars can look great from the start with Diesel offering the latest men’s and women’s designer avatar clothing, with items ranging from free of charge to €1.50. So for those visiting PlayStation Home, they can dress their avatars in the latest jeans and jacket prior to getting out and about.

:confused:OK so I need a little convincing in order to buy a PS3, you may have read before that my XBOX 360 gave up after only 2 days of usage. I'm still not certain tho if the PS3 is the right choice. Pro's and con's aside. I don't really know what I'm getting myself into.:confused:

Hey Confu3ed. The ps3/360 thread is not really the right place to ask as it is crowded with 360 fanboys.

Anyway, if you have an HDTV then Blu-ray would be a worthy addition. The 360 has had some problems in regards to the RROD and Disc scratching. If you played any classics in the PS1 or PS2 days then there is a likely chance that the Sequel will be exclusive to PS3. eg. MGS4.

The PS3 is a lot more expensive but if you look at the Hardware you're getting with it and the games that are coming out soon, then you will forget about the price and enjoy what is better about the PS3.

The 360 doesn't have many games coming out next year. Just Alan Wake and Halo: OSTOJCD while the PS3 has Killzone 2 GT5, Uncharted 2, Team ICO project and God of War 3!!

The PS3 is also future proof. The 360 uses the DVD format and that causes games to be downgraded or put on multiple discs.

Another thing to remember is that you have to pay for Xbox Live and that is roughly R600 a year. I would much rather buy an extra game with that money and yes PSN is just as good as XBL.

Prices of 360 games are going up and will soon be 1k whereas PS3 exclusives are around R850

I do own both consoles by the way and would tell anyone that the PS3 is better in every way :)

Happy Gaming

Confu3ed, i'd still recommend the console you prefer, but this is what i can tell you.
I own both, but 95% of my time is spent on the PS3.
It's not difficult to use at all, everything is very intuitive, easy to setup for online gaming, compatible with any bluetooth headset for chatting, PSEye readily available for voice chats and is used brilliantly in some games like Eye of Judgement.
Dump all your music, photos, trailers on the HDD, back it up to any external HDD.

Gotta go, will post some more after lunch.;)

Ok so if I decide on a PS3 what are the different models. I've seen an 80GB and 160GB. what's the difference apart from the disk space, and what is the hard drive used for? Finally which Ps3 would you guys recommend..........

there isnt any difference bet the 80 and 160gb and the ps3 uses laptop harddrives so upgrading is easy peasy. the only diff bet the two would be what they come bundled with and the 160gb has a dualshock 3. in ur out to save money and dnt care much for rumble support; grab the smallest size hd model and upgrade later!

the only true difference with the ps3 models lies in the phased out 60gb which had software emulated backwards compatability; yes the new models cant play those ps2 classics :( but thats k cos the next gen line up is great.
the 40gb had no card readers and had fewer usb ports

all in all the best package had to have been the now unavailabe 60gb (which i happen to own :D, sorry just had to include that!!)

You can find some pretty good bundles for the 80gb. The 160gb is the new one but you can only get it by itself with no extra games or controllers

Apparently at CNA you can get an 80gb + Extra Dualshock and GT5 Prologue for R5199

yeah confus3d, its only a matter of time before you succumb :D

heres some news on a new MMORPG, its sketchy at best but still promising. this article is old but honestly, its the latest i can find about any new MMO.

It looks like Square Enix has been busier than we thought. According to the official Game Developers Conference website, Square Enix will be hosting a debate about the technology behind the Final Fantasy Fantasy series, and will be discussing a new MMORPG the company has in the works.

“Taku Murata is the head of R&D of Square Enix. Under his leadership, Square Enix is now developing the common technology platform for the first time. The new game engine will be used for FINAL FANTASY XIII, a new MMORPG under development, and other titles in the future. In this talk, Taku will describe the whole process of the engine development; why now, why not third party engine, what is unique, how it is being developed, what were challenges, etc. You'll be able to see the technological essence of FINAL FANTASY development.

Details are scare - we don’t know if it will be based around Final Fantasy or a new franchise, but claims seem to indicate that it will almost assuredly be appearing on the PlayStation 3.

this is the special at CNA: http://www.cna.co.za/Pages/Catalogs...tID=83346007&VariantID=83346015&PLCT=83346007

Is a "sixaxis dual shock 3" controller the same as a dualshock 3. afaik the sixaxis has been discontinued?

Edit: I'd like to know which screen you guys recommend from these two
HP 22'' Wide LCD w2207h http://www.digitalplanet.co.za/p-107850-hp-pavilion-22-wide-lcd-w2207h.aspx
Samsung 22'' 2263UW http://www.digitalplanet.co.za/p-11...nd-282mm-dot-pitch-8000-1-contrast-ratio.aspx
reason for purchase from DP is that I received R4000 in vouchers for them, as a gift!

Thats it :)

A Sixaxis has no Rumble and is now discontinued, the Dual shock 3 is the new one and has rumble technology.

The controller in the Bundle is the new Dual shock 3 with rumble :)

Dont know much about screens so gonna have to wait for someone else to come along :)

AFAIK, Samsung offers the best displays right now.
Post a question in the hardware section confu3ed, guys there know their stuff.
Just make sure it's got a DVI connection
