Official Samsung Galaxy Note (N7000) Thread

I've found a few things that have been draining the battery on my Note (with official 4.1.2):
I think the biggest new power draw is Google Now (which forces Google Maps to always run two processes) - personally I like Google Now so much I can't bring myself to disable it, so that one's up to you.

I noticed this problem before JB already, there is a bug of some kind on one of the previous maps updates. I actually just removed google maps and installed waze instead, just as good if not better for GPS, but personally I use it extremely seldom so having google maps on was never a care of mine. My avg battery drop on a normal day is about 2.3%/hr and 0.9%/hr when I am sleeping.

and how's the battery life?

battery life ain't that great !
I found that wireless is the biggest cause of battery drain with 4.1.2. Switching wireless off last night at 19:00, and checking again at 06:30 this morning, the battery level had dropped from 55% to 52%. It would have run down completely in this amount of time with wireless on.

With 4.0.4, I never switched wireless off. This is really going to change how I use the phone...

I will post a pic a bit later.

Note just before the flatlining, the battery got a little boost from heaven! The kink after the flatline is where I bought some VC promotional data via USSD.

Good grief BigAl-SA, that drop in the middle is hectic... Is that your normal usage...? I get around 1.5 days usage out of my device before needing the plug, and that's with Mobile Network on all the time, a few email checks, Whatsapp, and maybe some radio...

That seems to be normal usage for stock 4.0.4. Before the update, 1.5 days was normal, using both 3g and wireless (switching 3g off when not in use).

In addition to the battery drain with stock 4.1.2, entries made on the n7000 in my calendar is no longer being updated on Google. This is seriously irritating, especially as it is picking up calendar updates made on other devices...

ANyone here try the 3.1 paranoid 3.15 rom, I keep getting the status 7 error.

CWM had a few possible causes and all mine check out, its rooted, unlocked, correct baseband and all.

I have the german 4.1.2 and want to move over to 4.2.2 and as far as I can tell its not coming over to the N7000.

Spent about 3 hours trying to get it sorted yesterday and it just keeps failing, also not skilled enough to install TWRP, unless someone knows of a noobs guide for that.

Install the Google Calendar app, you don't have to use it, but it will cause S Calendar to sync properly.

Unfortunately this didn't work, but Google Calendar set me on the track to solve it. S-Planner stores stuff in something called My Calendar and this doesn't get uploaded to Google, but the GCalendar app picks it up (that's how I managed to solve it). I switched My Calendar off in the S-planner settings, leaving my gmail settings on. When you add an event to the calendar in S-planner, you may have to change My Calendar to your Google address in the drop down in the dialog box.

I just took that stupid thing off, never liked S-Planner, don't actually like most of samsungs remake apps. Thats why whenever I get a new phone, plug it in, root and remove manu ***.
Now just trying to get a custom OS on so I can get 4.2.2 but no joy. Also don't like cyanogen or miui and paranoid is not working.

Okay it was a simpler problem than I guessed. Yes, it always defaults to using Mycalendar on a new install, but selecting your Google Calendar with the first event you create causes it to switch as you found out. I personally love S Planner, it's way better than the Google app and I love the full month view in portrait - the most concise overview of a month in one screen I've ever found.

More on 4.1.2 battery drain: I uninstalled Google Currents and the updates to Google+, then disabled Google+. My phone then rebooted itself, and since then has been flatlining on battery usage with wifi on when I'm not using the phone. The battery drain is still quite hectic when you use the phone, but I will do some more checks later.

Its google maps dude, they caused problems with it a few weeks back. Its not the OS. Since I took of maps my battery usage has gone from 7.6%/hr in "idle" to 0.9%/hr in idle. My average day time usage is 2-3%/hr.
Install better battery stats, will tell you exactly what's causing the problems.

Have Gsam, Wakelock detector and CPU Spy installed. Wakelock detector showed me a while back that Currents, G+ as well as Tapatalk were causing highish levels activity. I seldom use maps (use Navigon instead), so haven't updated. As far as I've been able to find out, ALL the new updates of google apps, including Gmail, are battery hogs due to excessive synching. Maps doesn't show up in Wakelock detector nor GSam's lists, so I'll leave it be for now, but will definitely keep it in mind.

Never used currents or G+, tapatalk as well got flagged on mine and I also never use GMaps, it was running in the BG, and it auto updates hey, its possible they fixed the bug now or it could be related to Google Now, as for navigation, navigation is google maps, they part of the same function. Navigation is turn by turn overlay on maps.

After removing maps/navigation tapatalk was next in line for high usage, one of thier updates made the quiet time not work, but then I also realized I use it very seldom, I purchased it back when I was following a lot of threads here and on a few other sites, but it would go days if not weeks between new posts so it became worthless.

You need to check on your CPU spy, the dev went and replaced it on the market with a much better version, think its CPU SPy+ or something like that, its a direct upgrade on CPU spy, but either the dev wanted to do something dif or someone else took over the project, either way its got loads of new useful features.

I just put on Paranoid Android 3.15 yesterday, working quite nicely, need a few days still to see what impact, if any it has on battery life, but its super smooth and I digs the hybrid mode, works nicely for the big screens.

Please keep us posted. I am considering rooting and going with the CM nighties. But I really need something super smooth, quick and stable. Nightlies is probably not what should get, but lag on touchwhiz is driving me insane.

I stopped using that rubbish touchwizz long ago, think it was about 30 seconds after I turned the phone one, not sure may of take longer for apex to download.
Weather or not to use PA depends on your screen size, its primary purpose is to be used with big screen phones as it's key feature is hybrid mode, where you can set all/certain apps to use the tablet layouts instead of the mobile ones, with GMail it works really nicely.

If you have a smaller phone or not interested in the hybrid then you may want to go with SuperNexus, that my 2nd choice, it basically converts it UI wize to a nexus 4 with some improvements on the code, no 3r party apps at all, its 100% vanilla android.

Personally not a fan of CM, it was really horrible the last time and when a "stable" one gave me that much trouble, not really inclined to try a nightly build. Ironically though the only way I could install PA was to flash the CM kernel first as with the stock sammy kernel I could not flash any rom, tried CM, PA and SN before I stumbled onto a thread with Sn that said you needed to use an alternate kernel, they provided a list but CM was the only one I could find for the note.

Ooow, now you've got me drooling! I've viewed a few youtube vids over the weekend on the PA rom and my!, does it look tasty! I've downloaded CM10 rom, and the PA rom. I just need to get down to rooting so I can flash. I downloaded exynosabuse and tried to root, but it doesn't work on the JB stock rom it seems.

Anyways, I will try rooting via the sdcard or odin.

Thanks for pointing me to this rom, with the 100's of roms out there with everyone claiming each rom to be the best, it really does make choosing the right one impossible!

Tried that. Did not want to work

I just rooted by installing PhilZ-cwm6

Busying backing up and will install CM10 first.

Trying to remember how I rooted, think I just dumped on super user, had a signed apk for either that or cmtr. GUide I found on XDA, used the same root file for ICS and JB.

So far I am liking PA, have not noticed any slow downs or lagging, anything negative. The battery life seems about the same, will have a better idea in the week as my battery usage is very inconsistent t on weekends, I know exactly what to expect out of it during the week.
