Official Samsung Galaxy Note (N7000) Thread

Okay, I am in love with my Note! Ever since swapping my Nexus S for the Note, I've silently regretted it. The phone was just never as responsive as the Nexus. I compared the specs and I just thought, similar specs with bigger screen should be better. But it wasn't, and that was just because of TouchWhizz.

Now with Paranoid Android, the phone is performing just as well as my Nexus. Very quick, everything opens quicker and navigates without any hesitation. I quite like the Phablet, Tablet settings as well. I'm currently using the Tablet setting. Makes one hand navigation a bit less painfull.

While on the topic of one hand navigation, one thing that TW did do correctly was the left or right justified dialpad. Any 3rd party solutions like that?

Thanks for all the suggestions so far guys. And CranialBlaze, I owe you a beer mate. :)

Still going strong this side, but you could of saved yourself a lot of headaches by just using apex or nova as your launcher, when I swapped I noticed apex uses about 20mb ram where as touchwiz uses anywhere north of 200mb.

So far PA's battery life seems very much the same, but BBS seems to be a bit buggy with it so I keep having to do a data wipe for it when they send out an update which has been often lately.
THe longest running comparable stat I got was a 1% hourly usage increase, but looking at the usage chrome was using 17% of my battery and up until PA chrome was not installed on my phone, I installed it after as I wanted to use the Dev tools. So I suspect at the worst battery usage will be the same, which for me was damn excellent at 2.7%/hr.

2 problems with PA though, well in 3.15 at least, MassStorage does not work, I so seldom use it I have not bothered to care. Also they forgot to include the camera app, so while the camera does work there is no way to launch it. I already had CameraFX so again no issue for me.
1 thing missing that I noticed was the lock screen limit option, I think, I have it on my Nexus 7, as I use dashclock I only want 1 widget and Nexus had the option to set that, if it exists in PA I have not found it yet.

All in all a very positive experience all round, have not had any random reboots, crashes or any slow down of any kind, certain apps are even working faster now than before. WiFi/3G/GPS seem to connect faster.

Also in case you did not know, the goo.im app thats preloaded is inteded for PA's OTA updates, by default it checks every 24 hours and on boot for an updated version which you can then download to your phone and then proceed to update.

Pretty sure I will not be giving SuperNexus a test, I like to the Hybrid too much and there is nothing catastrophically wrong for me to seek other roms out.

Which kernel are you using, I could not flash it with the stock kernel so I am using the Latest CM10.1

Bummer about MassStorage. I sync my music with DoubleTwist, which works only with MassStorage enabled :(
Looks like I have to find a work around.

I flashed with CM10.1 first and then flashed with PA. I'm running 3.0.31-CM

Get SyncMe, its for wifi sync. never liked doubletwist.
There are 2 3.0.31 kernels hey, one at the end of march and the other the beginning of april.

Hi Cranialblaze,

How do you still find Paranoid Android? Any new issues or slow downs yet?

I've been using it for a few days now and it works perfectly. Haven't noticed a difference in battery life as I have been unable to put this phone down since the upgrade.

Just do it.

Hi Cranialblaze,

Absolutely loving it, one of the best choices I have made for my droid in a long time. It has not skipped a single beat, no random reboots, no slow downs, no issues that I can see. Even that mass storage thing suddenly started working today which makes me think it was driver related as the phone was hooked up to the PC from pre-flash to me going home 3 hours later so drivers may of just not detected or reinstalled.

Only thing is the missing camera app, there was also an update notification a lil while ago so I installed that, still no camera app, but all the pros more than make up for that 1 little oversight, which also could be my fault. I installed normal gapps instead of the PA gapps (long story), and tonight I noticed there is an 80mb file size dif between the 2.

I have absolutely no intention of trying another ROM, or going back to stock or any of the sort, and at the end of today which was very much like normal day so I can realistically compare, battery usage was down from 2.7% avg to 1.6% avg. Google Chrome took it up to 4.7% so thats gone.

I would say try it, but thats only if you wish to improve your android experience.

I had originally moved from the official 4.0 ICS rom to the german 4.1 rom, then moved onto the Ultimate ROM.
Performance has been really steady with this rom ito battery performance. Get an occassional lag now and then.

Reading all these comments here about the PA rom is tilting me that way too.
Just a few questions re the move:

1. What steps did you follow to move onto PA - is that 4.1 or 4.2? If you have the XDA link that will help.
(I currently have the PhilZ Touch 4 kernel with CWM base version 6.0.2.8)
2. The camera app - how did you get around that?
3. Whats the difference between PA Gapps and normal one?

Thanks

More on 4.1.2 battery drain: I uninstalled Google Currents and the updates to Google+, then disabled Google+. My phone then rebooted itself, and since then has been flatlining on battery usage with wifi on when I'm not using the phone. The battery drain is still quite hectic when you use the phone, but I will do some more checks later.
I've had enough now. I'm going back to stock 4.0.4. Got all the stuff to root so I can run Ti backup, and am busy downloading the 4.0.4 rom - there's too much of the Samsung stuff I like using.

1 - Its 4.2.2, process should be the same if you already on a custom rom, normal flash. Only thing is you need to change kernels if you on a custom rom or get the status 7 error. I know Philz does not work with supernexus though, there was no specific mention for PA. LINK
Flash rom, flash gapps, wipe cache, reboot.
or if kernel problems
Flash kernel, reboot recovery, flash rom, flash gapps, wipe cache, reboot phone.
Kernel Links - I am using CM10.1 3.0.31 03042013
2 - I had bought camerafx when it was on special like a year ago and prefer it to the stock app, any app will work, you could probably just backup your apk and use that.
3 - From what I can see its more up-to-date, the normal gaps did not have maps, nav, g+ and currents.

Thanks for the quick feedback.
Just 1 Q - the link in point 1 is for the Samsung Nexus?

LOL, instructions are the same, but here is the correct on LINK
I see one of the issues given in the second post is that GPS doesn't work in some apps. Do you know if that is still the case? I'll work through the whole thread next week to see which are not working. GPS is quite important to me.

I have flashed the new rom, and it certainly does seem impressive at first sight.

Camera works now - so all good there. Will need to check GPS - most likely with Maps.
Does anyone know which mode it comes preloaded on - stock, phablet or tablet.

Also how do I know which one I am on currently.

Ok, I've rooted and am busy backing up some of my important apps with Ti backup (can't lose the data from my games!).

Just as a matter of interest, any know the reason for not using the stock recovery instead of kies/odin/heimdall for installing a custom recovery app/ROM?

Have not had any problems with it, but I also only use it with Noom and Waze, its toggled on and off using secure settings. Beyond that I cant help you, I refuse to reinstall that battery hog Google Maps

Kies will never allow a custom recover, odin does not support the file format for most custom recoveries, also both of those use download mode when custom roms need to be flashed via recovery, unless of course you can find the 1 in a billion that was actually designed to work with Odin, which would have to be an exclusive samsung rom as odin does not work with anything else.

Also remember, kies and odin are samsung exclusive apps, while most developers develop for a multitude of devices, PA works on dozens of devices, only a few of those are samsung, so while samsung can flash in download mode, the rest do not have such a mode, so they would have to have 2 completely seperate version, one for odin for a few samsung devices and then normal recovery ones for everyone else, its unnecessary work.

Think it has something to do with the bootloader as well, but there is not even a snowballs chance in hell samsung will every allow the flashing of custom roms through its official software.

If you looking at flashing PA or any custom rom for that matter, make sure you put on the CM10.1 kernel first, you WILL get a status 7 error if you do not.
