Official Super Rugby 2014 Thread

The Lions have by far been the worst team the last 6 weeks. They should at least try and look as if they want to play rugby. Pathetic

They playing according to their pedigree, or lack thereof. They're a team of nobodies. Their only springboks are Franco and Elton Jantjies. Considering how out of their depth they are in this competition they doing okay.

I'd be a lot more concerned with the Stormers and the Cheetahs, even the Bulls!!

At the start of the season who would have thought that by half way the Lions would be above the Cheetahs and Stormers on the log???!!

Looking at this SA log:

TEAM - P - W - D - L - PTS
Sharks - 10 - 8 - 0 - 2 - 35
Bulls - 11 - 4 - 1 - 6 - 24
Lions - 10 - 4 - 0 - 6 - 16
Stormers - 10 - 3 - 0 - 7 - 15
Cheetahs - 11 - 2 - 1 - 8 - 15

Stormers playing Bulls next week, which may mean the Stormers moving into 3rd position. I already waged on them next week. The Sharks are playing away games, Lions against the Highlanders. The Stormers may even end in 2nd.

We were chatting about this recently... I reminded my mates about what I said after the Lions' first 3 games; that their highly physical game plan of smashing into every maul and loose scrum would firstly cause themselves injuroes and secondly that the better teams would work them out.

And that is exactly what has happened. The better teams have figured out their single dimensional physical game plan and now they are getting klapped.

I've noticed refs don't really give penalties for going off your feet or sealing off anymore. Why is that?

Possibly because its interpretation is so subjective?

I've always thought it an idiotic rule. Players go off their feet all the time. If you don't you not playing the game properly.

If you think about it a player raking a step backwards just before he is cleaned out will cause the player doing the cleaning to full over, penalty for going off your feet, ridiculous rule to accurately and consistently police.

While I'm not 100% sold that going off your feet necessarily warrants a penalty, I do have an issue with sealing the ball off...

The problem I have with the Lions is that they may have a good attacking game, their lack in defense is woeful. They need to find a good balance between the two, because their offensive mindset is influencing their defensive lines.

And then they also have the same problem that all our SA teams have. Lack of support at the breakdown. Our ball is stolen at lose scrum time and counter rucked way too often. Our loosies would rather stand at first or second receiver than go and do their job.

Lastly, senseless kicking. We get frustrated way too quickly of not gaining ground and then try to kick the ball to get a sense of moving forward. Look at the Crusaders. They will put together plays with more than 10 phases without moving forward. They are patient in waiting for the defense to break down. They keep the ball and all kick as a last result. We cannot score points, if we don't have the ball.

I agree with both points. Cleaning out a ruck would generally always result in penalties should that be the case.
Sealing the ball off is a cheap tactic that deserves to be penalised.

Fanie, we seem to have one attacking team in our country. The Cheetahs. As much as it irks me to admit it, the Sharks should take a page from their Backs coaching staff as our guys tend to attack the defender instead of the gap. This leads to said frustration and the ultimate kick/up and under/chip/toe through.

Cheetahs has the same problem as the Lions. If they play with an attacking mindset, the defense is pathetic.
