Pity about the bonus point but a nice win for the Stormers. 27 - 6. Kept the Waratahs tryless with some ferocious tackling!

Yep we cock that up every year, and every year it costs us.

So the question that arises is how much of a part do referees play in the outcome of the match... we always bitch about refs but I was not actually watching this game but following online commentary. This is what I picked up :

1st half
2min Penalty to Sharks
5min Penalty to Cheetahs
7min Penalty to Sharks
14min Penalty to Sharks
29min Penalty to Sharks
34min Three penalties in a row to the Sharks
35min Penalty to Sharks
38min Penalty to Sharks
40min Penalty to Sharks

Total - Sharks 10 Cheetahs 1

Then : "Welcome back folks and in a bizarre set of circumstances, referee Jonathan Kaplan has been replaced by Pro Legoete because he has a stomach bug! But the show must go on..."

2nd half
47min Penalty to Cheetahs
55min Penalty to Cheetahs
57min Penalty to Cheetahs
60min Penalty to Cheetahs
66min Penalty to Sharks
69min Penalty to Cheetahs
73min Penalty to Cheetahs
75min Penalty to Cheetahs
76min Penalty to Sharks
79min Penalty to Sharks
80min Penalty to Sharks

Total - Sharks 4 (only improved by the consolation three in the last few minutes) Cheetahs 7

So should we assume that both refs just interpret things totally differently or did the one team all of a sudden start transgressing in the second half while the other improved their discipline?

As stated in the Sharks thread the reason for less penalties against the free state in the second half is because they got a direct order from Naka to not contend on the ground for the ball. Simple and smart really :)

IMO this is a big fat load of utter BS - regarding the "new" improved laws, stricter interpretation of them. Too many penalties, players not adapting well, the breakdown is a joke ( guys like Phill Waugh and Brussow look useless and cheap now ). Last years Super 14 was awesome to watch! I loved it. This year I realized how crap it really has become because of these new laws. Sure it has promoted "running" rugby, but in turn, it has broken a lot more. Thats just how I feel, don't flame me. :)

THe bulls have spies Potgieter matfield and Russouw back for the weekend.

Also I think our new lock and centre are both pulling their weight.

Good news for the Cheetahs too.

Robert Ebersohn returned from injury on Friday. He played 20minutes for the Vodacom Cup side before the Super 14 game.

He will very likely be included on the bench for Saturday's game against the Highlanders.
This guy defends like a demon. Exactly what the Cheetahs need.

That is good news as he will 10-1 one be one of the "future" Boks after 2011 WC NZ.

THe lions need to defend better the cheetahs are fine, just ask the sharks :D

So Naka kept the team unchanged.

R Viljoen, Demas, Mapoe, Bosman, Nokwe, Olivier, De Bruyn, F Viljoen, Smith, Brussow, De Villiers, Breedt, Nel, Strauss, Du Preez

Can not wait for brussouw to find a way around the new rules so he can be as effective as last year :D

Phill Waugh looked a bit bloody as well. :D

I'll let you know that he is very close. Source close to the team has confirmed to me that he is working extra hard during training to perfect it.
It is just a matter of doing it clear enough for the ref to approve but still quick enough to ensure he gets his hands on the ball before a ruck is formed.
You could already see during the Sharks game that he was very close to getting it. Obviously in the 2nd half they didn't even try after Naka told them to stand back.

Robert Ebersohn has been pulled back for another week on request of the team doctor. He will play in the Vodacom Cup team again to sharpen his skills and get some game-time.

Also I have respect that the are not "forcing" ebersohn back too soon. We need more of this kind of player management.

Shame! We got really harsh suspensions all this time while they got the lesser penalty to no penalty at all. Take the JP Nell fiasco as an example! Now when they get the treatment we got, something is wrong and the system must change??? Some things in life I just don't understand!

Referee Stuart Dickinson has been ruled out of the game between Cheetahs and Highlanders.

He will be replaced by Pro Legoete.

Don't know if I should be happy or sad. But I am willing to give him a chance. He needs to start somewhere.

Be happy - Pro did an ok job last week (despite the views of some on these forums who, admittedly, did not even watch the game).

What is DickInSome's excuse? Got the runs as well?

Sad, he missed a lot in that 2nd half he did. And yes I did watch the game.
