Official Thread: Samsung Galaxy S (I9000)

Oh god.

My second Galaxy S and I'm having that error again: The process com.android.phone has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again. (Force close button).

I've tried a lot of what google has told me to but with no luck, can anyone here tell me how to fix this? I really dont want to have to return this one too.

Hoping somebody can help me with this problem.

Trying to do the gingerbread update via Kies but for the life of me I can't get Kies to work.

After I've opened Kies I connect my phone but all that happens then is that the screen darkens slightly and Kies hangs.

This is driving me insane. I've got the newest version of Kies and using Windows 7 64-bit.

Ive updated to gb through kies and so far so good. My phone seems much smoother and the fact that im not being spammed with errors is pretty groovy indeed.

I've also got the "The process com.android.phone has stopped unexpectedly" thing in the past, now that I think of it it's only when I was using Winamp and someone called me and after the call ends it happens, not always though.

Damn but I like Winamp so much, I don't really want to remove it. Anyone know of a good replacement app I could use? And please don't say the stock Music Player.
 
Try the poweramp trial.. It eventually ended up being the first app I bought. I liked it much better than Winamp and it is a real high quality app.

Anyone else tried MIUI roms? Really great, but decided to switch back to Darky's after the last version of McG's refused to connect to the virgin mobile apns for 3g or edge.

Guys, has anyone had to take their rooted phone in for repairs yet? Did you reset the ROM counter before you sent it in?
 
Just took a look at Juwe, I am really really impressed. Will have to play with it a bit more to report on other things.
 
Well I moved to the leaked 2.3.4. (JVQ) and it's far and away the best rom I've ever used. Samsung have really solved almost every issue (bear in mind the the deodexed versions don't work as well). Most apps load instantly, I've seen a few microseconds delay in Gmail and one or two other apps (still faster than any previous ROM). I've made no modifications and don't plan on. The browser is great and I'm really impressed with the speed of the music player, I have a lot of music with cover art and it really slowed down (I had to use other music players) now it's all instant.
The only problem I've encountered thus far is that the music player has problems recognising tags in aac/m4a files, artist and track numbers are not recognised. This was solved by an excellent free program in the market called Mediafix.
As long as Samsung continue official releases for my i9000 I'm going to stick with them, I had too many issues with Darky's, I think all those speed mods and others just make things worse. My phone is once again working in top condition. I've found disabling animations really speeds things up further. Vanilla brand for me for some time to come.

Having had problems with my previous Galaxy S I've been reluctant to load up a custom ROM on my second one. I'm running Samsung's 2.3.3 and I must say its running like a dream. Everything has been smooth enough for my needs and I have no more of these error messages every 5 mins.

Juwe's and Darky's roms look really cool, but how much better can they be? I see these massive Quadrant scores posted by people using these roms, but does it actually make a difference in day to day usage?

I may convert to these roms in the future, but for the moment the stock rom caters to my every need. Maybe when people make apps with dualcore monsters in mind, but that is for the distant future. I hope. :P

+1 Quadrant scores are meaningless in real life. If my phone responds when I press a button that's good enough for me. Under Darky's things often slowed down so much that I pressed the home key twice to get back home, and I have 80 screen captures from last month alone.
 
Ok I'm thinking of also getting the Samsung Galaxy S maybe next month or so. I only have a few small questions..

1) How bad is the phone without the lag fix..
2) The firmware updates.. Do they also void warranty?
3) What can I do to the phone to make it run better without loosing warranty.

I saw this same phone at a customer the other day and was really impressed with the look and feel. It was playing a HD MKV movie without any problem and man the graphics is awsome from what I have seen.
I don't wanna get the phone if it's really bad and you have to do all these steps to get the phone running ok and in turn loose your warranty. Then I might just have to get another Nokia which comes working strait out of the box.

So what I am looking for is basically the pro's and con's of this phone..

i wanna give the stock gb a try..
I know how to flash etc but can some one pls give me the direct link to the stock firmware i should download that best works with vodacom?
i was looking at samfirmware.com but there are plenty of european, asian... firmware and pit files for the i9000 but im not sure which ones to download?

As far as i know samsung updates most definitely do not void warranty, which make them a nice option. Ive found the phone to be silky smooth running stock gb. Updating firmware wasnt bad either - just auto update kies, plug phone in and click go.

My struggles have been software related, but updating firmware makes everything better :-P

I'm also still very happy with the leaked 2.3.4 JVQ build! If I disable my 3G over evenings my battery only drops by about 2-3% overnight which much much better than 2.2.1. I have had some odd bugs with the Voodoo Audio Controls, but I think that is still a WIP on the latest release. The Speedmod kernel also have some funnies with reporting battery life.. Charging the phone it says 100% and when you plug out the cable it drops to 96%..
