Official Thread: Samsung Galaxy S (I9000)

Sorry for my "noobness", but another quick question, can i connect to my internet connection at home (wireless of course) and mxit and download apps without it using any of my airtime?
 
Anyone with Froyo/Android 2.2 willing to test this application for us? http://www.whatsapp.com/android/
Im getting my phone end of this month and use WhatsApp extensively to communicate with other people.. Just want to know if the application is functional and in working order as its now in public beta.. Thanks

Should be fine. My (different!) phone has defined access points. Whichever you connect to gets used. The notification area should also say which is in use- 3G or WiFi.

Never happened to me, and I've been charging my phone overnight for weeks. Maybe a bug in the firmware you're using.

Strange. I'm using the stock standard firmware it came with.

Hmm, my phone didn't have the stock standard firmware for very long, and it's a UK version, so I can't be sure. Try doing a firmware update over Kies, I don't know if one will be available for you.
If something is wrong with your phone you wont want to try an unofficial firmware because it voids your warranty, unless you know how to flash back the firmware you have now with any branding it has.

It's September, hopefully not long until the official 2.2 update :)
 
The only thing i miss is the ability to flip the phone over to silence it if it rings and i am in a meeting or busy... i cant seem to find a setting to do that... any ideas?
 
Dunno if anyone stumbled upon this yet: Official Android 2.2 (FroYo) for Samsung Galaxy S.

Read an article on GSM Arena as well. So, how long do you all suspect it will be till we get it here? I'm working on x64 laptop right now and Kies doesn't play too nicely with it. Will try on x86 laptop when I get home tonight to see if Kies picks anything up.

I've been using that Froyo firmware since Monday. It's a beta, not really an official public release. See my previous posts on pages 7 and 8 for my comments on it. Hopefully the official release is not far off.

I've got Kies working ok on Win7 64bit. I had some trouble at first but managed to get it working after a few attempts, switched the phone between mass storage mode and back to Kies mode to get it to work the first time. Make sure you have the latest Kies (it should be able to update itself).

I did update to the latest version. Funny thing though - BEFORE updating it kinda worked and picked my phone up. After the update, it won't register my phone anymore. Keep getting an exception about a method not existing - I'm supposing it's got something to do with the drivers. The exception states that's it's looking for a method to determine whether the plugged-in device supports Kies or not. Haven't gotten it to work since then. My best option would probably be to uninstall Kies and just run it without the update...
 
Got me phone!

Glad to say I got my phone, ordered on monday, and just picked up now :)

Have to say it looks and feels like an epic phone.. now just have to figure out how to use it :D

From playing around abit i can say one thing.. this thing is snappy!
 
I don't find the Tab in the least bit impressive other than a higher res and larger screen it has nothing over the Galaxy S (although I don't get the point of tablets in the first place).
 
Hmm, okay, I'm getting the Galaxy S (sometime soon I hope). Through Vodacom or MTN is the question. The repayments aren't really the issue, the prices are different but the value is the same. Problem is I've had bad experiences with MTN's repairs department, which is why I'm taking out insurance on the Galaxy (ouch). They stuffed up my Xperia the first time. Then when it broke again they said 'liquid damage' even though I looked after like a baby - never used it with sweaty hands or left it in a humid bathroom, never mind let it get wet. Funny thing is the battery's liquid damage indicator is still white. I lodged a complaint and basically got the finger. So I got screwed for R4k left of contract payments paying for a phone I can't use.

But on the other hand Vodacom has disgusted me with their service too, which is why I switched to MTN in the first place. One example - my GPRS stopped working leaving me stranded in terms of work. It took about twenty calls and just as many "Yes, I have loaded the correct WAP settings numerous times, I've tested the SIM in other phones therefore it's a NETWORK problem... No, please don't resend the settings, just forward it on to technical... Reference number? No I already have enough to fill a Lotto ticket, thanks." Eventually, two weeks later, a technician took the time to reset a setting on my profile and got it working. This happened again a few months later. Gotta love SA service :rolleyes:

So my main concern is repairs experience/service experience from any of you guys with MTN and Vodacom. Can I get a hands up? Any other input, like up-coming innovations etc? Signing a phone contract is like getting married. Long-term... and bank-breaking to end :D
