Not much, but I'm basically only after the screen protector - which is by many accounts as close to perfect as they get. Just bear in mind that the cases they offer come with a screen protector for the Vibrant, not the i9000. The case itself should fit though from what I've read on forums. I've already asked if they can mix and match - an i9000 protector with the Vibrant case and they can't (sealed item and all that).

Long story short is shipping isn't cheap ($30 odd for 5 items for the proper 3 - 5 day shipping, not interested in the pay-and-pray 3 month $5 shipping) but if a few of us split it it could be worth it. PM me if you're interested and want details. I want to order Thursday latest. :cool:

think this is worth it even if we end up paying $13 - $20 as the rand is strong and you get 2 in each pack. so whats R100 to protect that screen.

BTw how much glare dows this screen protector cause?
 
UPDATE: Got all the settings of the Vodacom site for my SGS.. All is working fine now.. :D

Lol no worries. I'll reply to all the pms later. It's amazing apparently. Youtube it for reviews on the iphone. It's the same material. Shipping is $24 + $1.5 for each additional item. Vat is 1.154 x 7.2 x $ price. I'm not aware of any customs duties. You don't pay Vat on shipping.
 
I couldn't wait so I installed Froyo via Kies. I used the instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8156558&postcount=206 (which were really easy on Windows 7).
I haven't done any mods or rooting so I did a reset and formatted the disks before and after and no problems.
Thanks to Froyo I can now say many of my irritations with the Galaxy S have been resolved:
TEXT SELECTION WORKS! - This was my biggest annoyance as you have to use another keyboard to select text or else it was impossible getting an accurate selection, Froyo uses a large cursor with a round button to easily move between and select text, now the phone really doesn't need a trackpad (this really bugged me and I'm glad they found a decent solution for this).
So far it seems overall faster but then the lag takes a few days to settle in so I'll see how that goes.
There are more options everywhere (which is always nice).
You can set the default calendar and phonebook for new entries.
Mass storage mode is easier to use.
The new gmail (updated yesterday) is even better and it's easier to reply to a message now.
The browser is a bit faster now, I don't really care about flash support so I haven't tested it, but some pages came up with those annoying ads so I guess it's working.
There are more lock screen options (numeric and letters).
Also this update removed all vodacom branding and I have the nice Samsung start-up and shut-down screens now.
Overall it was well worth doing and I hope the final manages to be better (although that's unlikely).
 
Not sure if its been said here or on XDA but what is the name of the file you make in your folders to exclude them from the galery / music player?

".nomedia" without the quotes. Windows doesn't let you create it for some reason. Use Notepad, click "Save As" and choose "All files" as your filetype. Then you can name it ".nomedia".
I'm sure there's an app on the market to do this for you, which would be useful for non-technical people.

ok, so i finally got my phone! yay!
I see there are a lot of "always on" sync options, with facebook, gmail, and google talk, ect...
how much bandwidth does those services actually require to stay always on?

lots :) i dont use the internet heavily on my phone but i probably average about 100 megs a month on it... thats with just normal use.

IS this the official international release of FROYO for SGS? what is the firmware code? I think kies wants to update my firmware, but i want to be sure it is the official one that was supposed to be released on the 23rd internationally

It is not officially released. There are only 'leaked' versions available for those who want to test it.

I'm running the latest available Froyo leak. I think Samsung still has work to do before this is good enough to be released.

But if oronte got it through kies, surely it is official? btw, which version is the latest official release? is it JM1?

are you running XXJPK or XXJPH?

No. If it's official you wont need to hack Kies to get it.
Some people have used Kies to install unofficial updates by tricking it into connecting it with a non official server or Samsung's server with test firmwares.
Other times test firmwares have been available by setting Kies to test mode.

I'm running JPK. It still needs a lag fix for good performance. I don't remember what the latest official release it, but whatever it is you should be able to get it through Kies (unless you already have an unofficial firmware installed). I think it's JM1.
 
oH, forgot about that. okay, thanks I see.

ya, I got JM1. So that is the last official release. Hmmm. is it worth getting JPK? or should i wait till i can get the normal one through kies?

also when flashing a new firmware, should i back up all my photos and contact lists? does the firmware clear the internal flashdisk?

When flashing from 2.1 to 2.2, the internal memory is wiped completely. Apps, settings, contacts are gone. Maybe for the official release Samsung will come up with a way to get them transferred in the official update. Stuff on the SD card isn't wiped though, so photos and other stuff will still be there.
If you really want a certain feature of Froyo like Flash support or certain apps then I guess it's worth installing JPK. Otherwise it doesn't offer much.

After you have flashed I recommend you do a factory reset (just to avoid any potential problems). Then root and install a lagfix.

If you're worried about it then rather wait for the official release. I don't think it's worth the trouble for most people if they're happy with the phone as it is.
 
Last night I FINALLY got Kies connected to my phone and tried the Firmware update to 2.2 from the XDA link above. It just kinda hung around on "Downloading Binaries" without doing anything for about half an hour, so I cancelled it and installed RyanZA's lag-fix.

It's unbelievably fast now. I'm going to stick with this until the official version comes out. 2.2 can't be THAT much better.
