Official Tri-Nations 2011 Thread

Good to see that the boys still have the passion. When brussouw came back on with blood all over, Bismarck simply not wantinng to leave the field and Habana diving all over the place to try and make that 1 in a 100 save, I realized why I will aways support the Bokke even when they are not dominating world rugby.

On Saturday we played TEST rugby. We took all the points on offer and just kept building the lead. Habana realy looked like he wanted to play rugby again and barring him cocking up by going for the intercept try, once or twice he realy had a good game. Well done JdV and J. Fourie, J.Fourie is a general for the backline and the difference it makes is really good to see.

Our scrum dominated and will continue to do so IF smith is not picked on prop. As bad as it is to replace Bismarck with Smith, rather having Smith in at hooker will at least see our scrums stand up to any in world rugby.
Brussouw was awesome to behold, and Alberts showed that he had the speed to get to the break downs in time, unlike D. Russouw. I would however still take Russouw as cover for the lock position. Spiess had a much less "visible game" but did more dirty work and cleared and tackled.

As much as I do not like Pietersen, he had a good game barring the one missed tackle. On fullback I hope to see Lambie back in action as I feel that he provides a bit more than Gio, although I would not be sad at all to see Aplon don the no. 15 jersey.

I was also impressed to see both Bakkies and Matfield looking fit and doing their bit on attack and defence.

Fourie du Preez might not have had the best game BUT anyone that can not see how much better Morne Steyn plays when he has Fourie on his inside is blind (Steyn even kicked less and made a couple of tackles :p:D).

Tony Woodcock, Keven Mealamu, Ali Williams, Jimmy Cowan, Hosea Gear, Sonny Bill Williams and Israel Dagg in a starting lineup for a team will only be seen as a B team if you do not really know anything about rugby.
These guys will walk into most international sides and start.

I am 95% sure we will be top of our group and that we will face the ABs there. I give us a 35-40% chance to beat them. My feeling is that the team who takes this one should play Aus in the finals and if we beat the ABs I rate our chances as 50/50 to win the WC.

Ps. if I was the picking the AB team, I would pick SBW on inside centre and Nonu on outside.

My über team:

15 - Patrick Lambie
14 - Bryan Habana
13 - Jacques Fourie
12 - Ryan Kankowski
11 - Lwazi Mvovo
10 - Morne Steyn / Butch James ?
9 - Fourie Du Preez
8 - Bismark Du Plessis
7 - Jean Deyssel
6 - Heinrich Brüssouw
5 - Bakkies Botha
4 - Victor Matfield
3 - Jannie Du Plessis
2 - John Smit
1 - Tendai Mtawarira

I don't think we have too many problems in the forwards and it would be very interesting to see how Bismarck performs at #8. Personally I don't like him at hooker. I think he coughs up a lot of ball and he also can't control his temper in the heavy front row stuff.

I've been saying for years that Kankowski is a better midfield player than most of the centres we have. He has speed, ball control and decisiveness on his side.

Mvovo and Lambie are the two newbies who have shown the greatest amount of raw talent amongst all the country's young players, imo. With a mature team around them they are going to be superstars. Both are amazing on defence. I'd also be tempted to switch Steyn and Lambie around during a game to confuse the opponents.

Habana seems to be coming back into form and if he can keep building through the competition I think he will be back to his best at the business end of it.

I think Kanko would be run silly if he was to play at inside centre.

I do like the idea of Bismarck maybe seeing some game time from "loose" triangle, BUT the problem is that at international level the positions become very specialised. We saw this on saturday with JP moving to fullback. Also the saturday prior to this one when John smith moved to prop.

Lol, but I must say I also sometimes want to play guys out of position just to see what they could do and how well the would adapt :D

Now we have a chance at winning the WC.
The Boks showed cohesion and purpose on Saturday something that has been lacking for a long time; the fact that it was a weakened AB team doesn't detract from that either. World Cup's are won on defense; though we certainly need to work on our attack :D but now I'm actually looking forward to watching the WC :D

It seems that TMO decision was illegal.
The referee and the television match official were operating outside our agreed protocol... They made a call they were not entitled to make. If that means referees miss a knock-on or something else in the lead-up to a try, then that's the way it is

The rules should be changed IMO. Maybe coaches should be given two challenges in a match, but that might slow the game down more.

I think that the TMO should be able to stop the game, or communicate directly to the ref while the game is in play. And the refs assistants too. They should be able to put the flag up every time there is an infringement that the ref doesn't see, not just when there is dirty play or the ball goes out of bounds.

If the ref asked try or no try then isn't the TMO suppose to comment if it was a forward pass?

Actually the ref should have asked if there was a reason NOT to award the try. This gives the advantage to the attacking team and offers the TMO a wider scope to assist the ref.

Sorry for coming in a bit late. Tried scanning through all the comments today and most of the points are already covered but I'm going to +1 to my post count with my feelings.

Port Elizabeth was AMAZING. What a lekker city and such a good host. Hope PE gets plenty more tests. I've never ever heard our Anthem sung like that. Goosebumps from start to finish. No way the Boks could lose after that. The vibe was so awesome before, during and after the game. :):):)

Coming back to the game. It was a good and much needed win for the Boks. We just couldn't go into the RWC with no win and no momentum.

Brussow is such a monster, the guy has no end. Without him slowing down the ball and making crucial turnovers I honestly believe we would have lost that game. Bismarck was not far behind. I've never really thought about him shifting to flank to accommodate Smit at hooker. But that comes with it's own problems as well. Having said that about Brussow, I think he will have difficulty getting away with everything he did on Saturday if it was a Southern Hemisphere referee. But kudos to him for playing that fine line and also playing the referee. I'm a big fan.

Also good to have Habana back on the rise again. I actually called it a while ago when I found out that he is involved with the Eye Gym and Dr Sherylle Calder again. It actually baffles my mind that she is not involved with any RWC squads and more so the Boks. Only lady in the world with two RWC medals (England 2003, Bokke 2007). Her programs are magical.

Along with you guys I'm also concerned about our lack of scoring tries but not as much as I'm concerned about our first line of defense being broken with such ease. But both these issues can be fixed before the RWC, as long as the coaching staff acknowledge them. Touching on the subject of not scoring tries - I got really frustrated with Fourie du Preez and his little habits of throwing his hands in the air and trying to point out stuff in the rucks to the referee. Instead he should be clearing the ball as quickly as possible. We lost momentum so many times because of this and had he cleared the ball quicker I'm sure the All Blacks defensive lines would not have had time to organise themselves and we would have scored a try or possibly two.

Pierre Spies also impressed me and he did so much of the donkey work upfront. He was also a big positive at lineout time and for the first time in months he is actually crossing the advantage line with his runs. Our frontrow also gave the Kiwis a scrumming lesson.

Over all. Very happy but concerns need to be addresses very urgently.

At some stages Hougaardt was beating him to the breakdown and was clearing the ball out super quick!

Does it not remind you of a certain ex-Wallabies scrummie? That "woe is me" attitude of George Gregan?

Welcome to the Friendly City!!!

Really nice city you have there. We actually spent the night in Port Alfred. Also a very beautiful place. Had breakfast overlooking the marina.

Yeah. I really like Du Preez but his little habits are costing us so many scoring opportunities.
I once laughed at JJ Harmse in the media box at Loftus when he said: "I wonder who throws their hands in the air more? Fourie du Preez or referee Craig Joubert?"

Does it not remind you of a certain ex-Wallabies scrummie? That "woe is me" attitude of George Gregan?

So irritating. It might have been effective back in George's days but these days quick ball is the key factor when you want to catch defensive lines napping and in the process score tries.

No, that BS was invented by the king of the døøses himself: Joost Van Der Døøshuizen. If he's going to start doing that in every game then we may as well bring back the tubby coloured bloke from WP.

Just wanted to share some of the photos from our two photographers at the game. There are plenty more on the Facebook group in my signature if you want to go have a look. I believe the photographers will appreciate it. Leave a comment or just a "Like"

Awesome pics!!! WOW!!!

Jane vs Smit looks like David vs Goliath. It's shot like these where we can get a good appreciation for the size of these guys... and they are huge!!

I hope Bwana will be uploading some of his pics too. Believe he was there as well.

This was special for me. Snapped this photo from my seat.
People got bored at halftime and started folding paper planes with the placards in the stands. Hundreds of attempts but only one plane made it all the way on to the field, with a massive victory cheer from the crowd of course. It "zoomed" past Fourie du Preez and landed in the wasteland. After the All Blacks knocked on, Francois Hougaard walked back to his spot on the wing and saw the plane. He picked it up, had a look around if anybody was watching and took a shot at getting it off the field. Unfortunately it crash landed a few feet further and the physio picked it up and chucked it away. :D
