Official Vox DSL feedback thread

Thanks.. Seems I'm a victim of interleaved mode. Thanks Telkom.. :(

What is the correct VDSL settings for my router?

I have a 20Mb VDSL account and connected via a ADSL2+ router. I saw soem feedback on the forum saying that you don't get the full performance connecting via an ADSL2+ router. Bought myself a VDSL modem, it is however reporting that it is connecting on ADSL and the VDSL setting is not working. Phoned the helpdesk last night, but according to the individual that I spoke to there is no difference.

Seem like I wasted my money.

I read up a bit, and this is the feedback:

"You get both 20mbps ADSL, and 20mbps VDSL. These are 2 different technologies, though Telkom sells them as a single product, depending on what type of equipment you are connected to. On the ADSL side, the max upoad is 1mbps, and on VDSL, I believe it is around 3.2mbps. To get VDSL speeds, you have to have a VDSL modem, which must be connected to VDSL equipment on Telkom's network, which happens to be an MSAN (in most cases AFAIK)."

That is correct. Your line must be connected to a MSAN or ISAM on a VDSL2 port.
The difference between Telkoms 20Mbps ADSL2+ and VDSL2 is that with VDSL2 the upload speed is Up to 2Mbps.
With 40Mbps VDSL2 the upload speed is Up to 3Mbps.

VDSL2 permits the transmission of asymmetric and symmetric aggregate data rates up to 200 Mbit/s downstream and upstream on twisted pairs using a bandwidth up to 30 MHz. It deteriorates quickly from a theoretical maximum of 250 Mbit/s at source to 100 Mbit/s at 0.5 km (1,600 ft) and 50 Mbit/s at 1 km (3,300 ft), but degrades at a much slower rate from there, and outperforms VDSL. Starting from 1.6 km (1 mi) its performance is equal to ADSL2+.[3]

Hi jannier, thanks for your response.

I take it that the next step is then for Vox to instruct Telkom to make the change and that the individual that I spoke to is slightly uninformed?

If VOX manage your line then I would guess so.
Or you could log a fault direct with Telkom, explain the situation and let a Technician come out to you.
Then explain to him what is wrong and provided that there are a MSAN or ISAM near or at your exchange that support VDSL2 hopefully they have a port available to move you.

You could also try to PM "TelkomZA" here at the forums and see if he has any advice.

I was previously on 20Mbps ADSL2+ on an IMAX unit at my exchange and was moved to the ISAM to get me on VDSL2 to benefit from the increased Upload speeds.
VDSL2 was important for me because I needed the max available upload speed I could get for work related reasons.

Bolt-on off-peak (I'm sure) being registered incorrectly as peak

@Voxy -

1. there is something in your system/s measuring my Bolt-on off-peak usage as peak usage on my account - happened on the 8th & again today ; on the 8th, 123.71MB, and today funnily enough, between 6 - 10am (it's not even 10am as I write this, so I'm sure then that something's playing up in your system/s), 611.51MB.

2. On the 8th, in the morning I used a different ISPs account, and today, the modem & router (separate from one another) haven't even been on until about 15 minutes ago, so nothing should be picked up since 6am this morning.

I'm sending a PM with my account no. for you to look into this, and hopefully reverse these figures. If you look at the history on my account, during peak-times, you'll usually see minimal usage (until later on in any month when I know I have data to play with from my 1GB free Bolt-on Gig4Gig allocation) as I use other ISPs accounts during the day, most of the time.

So far, it's calculating I've used 737.09 MB / 1,000.00 MB (73%) of my peak data & I usually never get that close to it, for the month as a whole.

.. or someone's suddenly using my account somewhere

Await your response.

EDIT : today's only session log registers starting at :

09:35:05 10/Feb/2016 Wed Open Session

.. which is correct in so far as me connecting this morning's concerned ; so how could my account have used 611.51MB, already between 6 - 10am ; data was used during the night (10th) between midnight & 6am, but that seems to have correctly come through as off-peak. Something's not right, somewhere.

On the 8th (just like multiple other days), there are various connecting times during the day, but that doesn't mean data's being used on Vox, as connections are made to Afrihost, Gridhost & WebA. to use their daytime data. It's only because Vox's username/password are in the modem as a default, that your system records an open session (use half-bridge settings in modem/router).

Refreshed my account & now showing as 899.80 MB / 1,000.00 MB used - going up all the time ; should be capped at the 1GB it states, but going to double check that now.

If they don't do the switch for you you could force them to do it by temporarily upgrading to 40Mbps as ADSL2+ does not support said speed so they'll be forced to switch you to the VDSL modulation profile.

Thanks, Voxy - typed out this a.m. a detailed PM reply (and was sure sent it OK to you, but having looked now, it's not in the Sent Items, even though I ticked the relevant block to keep it).

Anyway, can confirm that someone spoke to me twice, yesterday, and that the ticket is still open until tomorrow afternoon, at which time I'm expecting a call to determine how stable the last 2 days have been, regarding data consumption during peak hours.

So far all looks back to normal, but I still don't know how that data disappeared during peak on the 8th & 10th - as I think I noted in original post, on the 8th, was primarily using another ISP for work at that time, and on the 10th, the modem/router combo were off between 6am - around 9h40am. which is the time when over 600MB disappeared from my account, as depicted by Vox's graph, on the day.

Since then, it's been stable at 941MB used for the month out of 1GB freebie ; will up it if necessary for peak.

Regards, BCR.

Good morning BCR

Great news. Hopefully this issue remains resolved.

Thank you for your patience thus far.

My incorrect billing was sorted by your support. I got billed for a service I don't have anymore.
Hi

I'm glad to hear it was resolved.
Give me a shout if it happens again.

Bolt-on peak-time usage once again registering even when not on VOX as ISP !?

@Voxy - unfortunately, have had to send you a detailed PM again, based on the subject title above.
Sent exactly @ 2pm. I won't mail your support again this time, as I did last. Will rely on you to please PM a ref. # to me. Would appreciate e-mail reply/ies instead of cell calls on this, once you all think it's resolved. I'll also continue to monitor usage daily, myself. Thanks, BCR.
