Hey,

I decided to do a little speed test and see if I update all of my different games at once what kind of speeds I could get from Afrihost over a longer period of time.

I updated Starcraft II, Minecraft, Path of Exile and Rift while downloading the beta files for Defiance.

My average download speed is 2443kbps. I supposedly have a 4Mbps line, but I'm basically getting 60% of my download speed. I would have been happy with a download speed of about 3500kbps taking the packet overhead into account. Essentially this means that I have to wait 30% longer for my downloads to complete. The test was done in Centurion at 10AM on Thursday the 21st of March.

After the screenshot was taken Starcraft II, Path of Exile and Rift were still updating. The Defiance files were also still downloading. Only Minecraft had completed.

I would be interested if other people can repeat this experiment and post their results.

49min to do 877MB... so that's 17.9MB/min = 305KB/s. Ideally, 100% of speed on a 4Mb line is around 425KB/s, so you're getting 72% of that.
In all honesty I'd call that shaping.

I repeated the same experiment at 2:31PM on Thursday the 21st of March.

This time Origin and Starcraft II were updating. Defiance beta was downloading.

2059kbps average over 49 minutes. That's 15% slower than what my results were this morning.
Update: afrihost3.png 2291kbps average over 95 minutes.

I must have missed it, can't find the relative info, are you on an uncapped, capped, normal or business account, what speed is the account what is your line speed? You could have a 4Mb/s line and a 2Mb/s account although I doubt it. :-)

Looks like a 4Mbps shaped, uncapped line/product.

Have you tried a different ISP?

Remember telkom says it is a best effort service. Maybe it is your phone line and not your ISP?

Testing is the only way to know.

After 3 and a half hours my average download is 2474kbps. afrihost4.png

The ISP account may be "up to 10Mbps" but your ADSL line is only "up to 4Mbps". Your capped account will operate at the line speed.

Yes thank you, I am aware of that. I was simply answering the question from pgs.

Care to post some line stats then? SNR, Attenuation, etc. Also a traceroute to whatever website [when your line is idling].

Ironically the most expensive ADSL account I have per GB does the worst - Openweb (IS) unshaped -1752kbps after 9 minutes.

Your line stats are normal.
Traceroute?

Go to command prompt, type in "tracert games.saix.net".
