Ok, I've been looking for a thread that has technical information about the Open View decoders and the quality of the service but I've found none. So I've decided it'd be proper to have the people that have it, or have tred it. to post what they think of it. So if you own a decoder or have owned one, did you like it? How does it compare to others, in terms of picture quality and decoder functionality.

I have it. Picture quality is fine apart from some sabc channels in the wrong aspect ratio. Content is very thin.

My mother got it a few weeks ago. Have to agree with Sinbad. It is an entry level service.

Thanks guys, I guess it wouldn't hurt to give it a try. Was kinda hoping more people would give their input but I guess not a lot of people have it. Shame though with the SABC and it's incorrect aspect ratio. It's sad cause some programs were actually made to be viewed in widescreen but end up being broadcast in 4:3 letterbox. looks really stupid on widescreen tv's.

The aspect ratio doesn't bother me because my tv is big. To me the quality is similar to analogue or slightly better on HD channels.

The electronic program guide saves you time. On the content... you will likely only watch about 2 additional channels and 2 kids channels.

Still much better than nothing. :)

Does any1 know if you can use an existing DSTV dish or must you get a open view dish installed to use the open view decoder.

I am using my dstv dish. Just had to re aim at the right satellite

Hi folks,

I'm looking at getting this installed this weekend/next week.

I'm specifically looking for the SpaceTV Decoder Package, including installation. Can you guys guide me in the right direction where to purchase it please? I don't want the Ellies version, as the SpaceTV will get PVR in future etc.

So I got my OpenViewHD installed today.

I got wonderful service from a company name Advance Home Solutions and Security: www.advancehome.co.za

They really went out of their way to assist me. I paid in my decoder/package fee yesterday afternoon only when I got paid and they came around first thing this morning and did a really neat job of everything.

To get back to the OVHD.

It's great. Exactly what I expected and more to say actually. This Da Vinci Channel that GarryVDH mentioned is World Class stuff. I am seriously stunned at the quality of shows and content that is being shown on it. It's brilliant. Much better and more informative Science wise than any other Discovery or National Geographic Channel I've seen so far.

Sure, a lot of it is geared towards children, but it's still great stuff.

I've added all the Globecast channels to my SpaceTV Decoder as well, so I'm really enjoying watching proper International news and Documentary shows. There's a few other channels on it that is a bit weird, but you can skip past it.

All in all. I'm never paying a monthly fee again and I really don't care about any advertising. It's worth it.

Shot. :)

I had mine installed last week but to date still have no service. Are you sure that this is not a scam or a Gupta linked company?

Hi there,

You do not have to reaim your DStv dish anymore. Openview started off only on SES5, the satellite Starsat/TopTV use, but they have had a mirror transponder on IS20, the same system as DStv for some time now. I "cable cut" DStv 18 months ago, and I find Openview fills in the gaps with the local channels. I just unplugged the DStv decoders and plugged in Openview.
