OpenView HD lying to the public: SABC

That's confusing..... are they saying that you can pick up the SENTEC broadcast with their equipment ?

No, Vivid/Freevision runs through IS20, if memory serves. OpenView will apparently run on SES-5 (or at least the Astra satellites at 5°E), which is the same satellite TopTV uses.

I really cannot understand the SABC stance on this… Won’t OpenView provide them with more exposure, thus also give more open-attention to advertisers etc? Come on, everyone owning a television set should pay his TV-licence already…

as far as I understand the position SABC 1.2.3 have a must carry status for their SD. HD is a different story though and so Platco would be well to make an offer for SABC to broadcast HD at a cheaper price than other channels as a mutually beneficial thing which SABC has clearly refused.

I think Sentech is just having a baby

And nothing of value was lost :D

I think this is great news, with the SABC channels off the cards there will be spare bandwidth for a few more Nollywood channels because we all want more of that and.

Best to stop there, drinking and posting can harm one's reputation (provided I had a reputation to start with).

Now I'm confused. Don't they have to broadcast SABC by law?

That is my understanding too. But then
According to Shinn, the SABC was offered the prime first three channels on OpenView HD at discounted rates, but the SABC turned down the offer.
I don't think that OpenView an charge for this. If it must be carried it must be carried for free.

Shinn is probably confused - and performing that great function of a politician, confusing others

The question of carrying SABC is different to making them headline channels which are marketed on the platform and available in HD and so on. MNet and the Supersport set are headline channels for DSTV. I am pretty damn sure that OpenView HD sought to negotiate the carriage of SABC in HD at discounted rates.

+1

I don't think that OpenView an charge for this. If it must be carried it must be carried for free.

IIRC initial reports stated that OpenView will not be applying for a PayTV operator licence since there are no subscription fees and it is a satellite service with a once off purchase fee.

If that still holds true, there are no licence conditions that would compel OpenView to carry SABC channels, unless ICASA has a way of blocking GHz signals from satellites to force OpenView to carry SABC channels (for free or not).

but the indications are that Platco is the platform and a PayTV licence operator may seek carriage - albeit under a different name to OpenView HD which is the free-to-air service under which event Platco has to carry otherwise licence holders on the channel side would fall foul
