OpenView HD reaches milestone

Good to see OVHD growing. Decoders are going cheap for R379.

The seriously need a few news networks on there. I'd love to move my parents to it from the ridiculously overpriced bottom dstv package, but they'd never go for it if they can't watch something like Al Jazeera.

Yep, OVHD desperately needs some more channels, especially news channels like E tv's own Enca, now exclusively available on their competitor Dstv, and not even on the most affordable Easyview package, which rose from R 19, to R 29 to R 39 per month in just a few years. Al Jazeera and France 24 would already be an improvement, BBC world even better.
And just like Easyview OVHD should have also many more radio channels, incl BBC World. And most of the local radio stations.
Decoders are available for R379 at House & Home, and R 399 at Game.

+1
the ridiculous increases was the main reason I left dstv

I think the main reason would be the availabilty of the is20 feed, so no need to get an installer as lots of people already have a dish setup

That's the only reason i don't have it. I love my Al Jazeera, great doccies every week.

Also got this a while back...pretty happy with it, being "free". Don't watch much TV, and couldn't care less about sports, so this seemed ideal. Not keen on forking out for DSTV every month.

Da Vinci is quiet good; some decent movies on e movie channel. Recently found the Wild Africa channel on hunting, which is quiet interesting. Lots of "church" channels though, showing pastors and their loyal congregation, but you can hide unwanted channels.

More channels and news is always a good thing, so hopefully things will get better as they build up more scale.

I think if they had just one News channel I'd get it.

Wonders what people are watching on there, but am happy for their development we need alternatives

Must have a lot of adverts to keep it free

Also can the decoder pick up other sats?
Can its firmware be upgraded and modified to allow reciving other stations

I stopped DSTV too. The main reason not going for open is not having a suitable PVR function. One used to be able to buy generic pvr units which were cheap and simple to operate but they aren't really marketed any more
