And when I contact support about poor speed and throttling this is the answer I get:

Hi Armand

Thank you.

I see exceptional use on this account.

Would you like to upgrade at the end of this month to an account that is more in line with your requirements.

May I recommend the following:
* 4 Mbps Platinum Uncapped.
* 4Mbps Gold Orange Uncapped

Kind regards,
Zelda Coetzee

No client care there! Just trying to sell more expensive package. The greed cancer has taken hold in OW, it is just about the money, not client care!:cry:

I thought OpenWeb accounts were not usage monitored and were not subject to throttling. Eat as much as you can?

Yet another contradiction, which now points at a star based system.

Yip, sounds like things were quietly changed over time, without letting clients know.

I think you will find that change occurred at about the same time they introduced the business packages. This is starting to smell like MWeb all over again... <_<

I think they always used the star system, all IS resellers (and thats all OW is) are subject to the it.
Mr Beep saying they didn't is a load of BS.

Plugg =IS =Star System
Web Africa =IS Reseller =Star System
BuzyBuy =IS Reseller =Star System
Incredible Connection =Star System

I suspect IS has gotten stricter with their Star System and OW users are feeling its pinch

They are running their business accounts in the same space as the residential accounts, throttling the residential accounts in the day to give more bandwidth to business.

And kind of forcing the complaining users to go for better and more expensive packages if they want better speeds.

From 07h00 to 17h30 today the line was absolutely dead - I had nntp running with a limited 20kb daytime speed, nothing else running - my other half could not retrieve mails (pop3 and web), browse http, youtube nor use picasa and the likes.

Same thing on my Gold account. They should just rename all Openweb uncapped accounts to "night owl browser" because during the day it's practically dead.

Quick question, when I play any type of online game (battlefield 4 on PS4 for instance), then the rest of my internet pretty much dies, whats up with that?

I complained to openweb last night about my poor performance on my Gamer's King account, got the default response from Keoma this morning: "Our network has not experienced latency or packet loss for a number of years now. Also, our shaping does not increase latency, ever.
High latency and / or packet loss is almost always caused by a fault on the Telkom side, or the client hardware side."

So strange then how when I switch to a backup account with another ISP that everything works 100%.

Classic openweb response :)

I love responses like 'Our network has not experienced latency or packet loss for a number of years now' :whistle:

Yeah right! Keoma, My GW2 want's a word with your "dynamic shaping". Where literally going from one map to another can jump me from 180ms to over 2000ms. On multiple OW accounts that have been dished out to me. Only on OW.

Just one of the reasons why I** cancelled my sub with them. Support always pointed to Telkom being at fault or my hardware being at fault. I even had a Telkom Tech talk to them, at which point they quickly tuned a different story and shifted the blame to IS; it really never is their fault. I've received these types of responses from multiple support agents, so it's SOP for them.

**The S/O ran out of patience and got so cheesed off with OpenWeb's service (or consistent lack thereof) that she cancelled it last week on my behalf. OpenWeb has caused me many frustrations and I've had words with them on many occasions, but when the S/O gets frustrated, there's hell to pay.

I'm currently on a business trip atm, so can't vouch first hand on service, but according to the S/O, day time browsing has been consistently non-existent (backup accounts work perfectly) and NNTP and general streaming has been non-existent since Monday evening. Got little less than 6 weeks left thanks to OpenWeb's cancellation policy.

Settican, did they give you a new account or move you to whichever network (IS vs MTN)?

WTF
Statement from the doctor
“Some ISPs monitor client data so that they can enforce drastic throttling policies, making an account slow or even unusable. By default, we don’t monitor anyone’s usage on uncapped accounts.”
