OpenWeb ADSL Feedback Thread (Pt2)

As I said, I've never had a problem with anything during normal hours.

Then you must be lucky, or use services where it's not noticeable. There were huge problems 2 - 3 months ago (I was signed up for a day and cancelled, so I have first hand experience). And then recently again, about 2 weeks ago, they started again. Though not as bad.

Anyway, just a word of warning about AH, that there are still IPC issues in the Western Cape region. The threads speak volumes.

I personally do not download mass amounts of stuff just for the sake of downloading. I like being able to quickly download a movie or an episode of my favourite series when i feel like watching it. At the moment those downloads are running (two different torrents both with VERY high seeds) at 0.3 to 1 kbps on a 10mbps line and the silver turbo uncapped package! Quite shocked at the horrible speeds.

Your tenacity is admirable, but I not truly cannot understand how you have not cancelled? Have you read the recent threads where everything you used to someone disbelieve has been summarised?

Was sucking this afternoon on AH at the office. Been going on for weeks. Considering WA for a change. In Cape Town.

Well if I could find an isp that actually works as advertised then I would cancel and move but I have not found another. I refuse to give any isp business if they throttle accounts. So as far as I am aware my choices are openweb and afrihost. Both of which are having issues at the moment.

Sorry, I do not understand this logic - not giving ISPs who throttle business?

Uncapped ISPs do one of two things: Throttle you after you've had full speed for a very good while, or shape you into the ground if you consume too much.

It's up to you to decide, but I do not at all understand how supporting the shaper is more 'moralistic' than supporting one who throttles...

Both are challenging the 'uncapped' term. Both seek to preserve their network capability for 99% of the users.

Especially when the limits are advertised, and way above your own usage!

We have all advised you plenty of times, I'm afraid you can only blame yourself if you're sitting with problems by tying yourself up in the above self politics. :(

earlier my 4mb gamers king account died... around 15.00. switched to my capped Cybersmart account.

switched back to OW after about two hours... now I got a completely different IP address which is not showing in stats, yet there's still an active connection of the sharer of my account.

currently not showing me at all in my stats yet I'm using my OW account.

another interesting fact is that the IP checker always shoed my ISP as OW. now its suddenly IS...

very interesting...

it seem the accusations of account sharing can be traced back to 2007:

Hey Sakkie

OpenWeb does not share, or resell Uncapped accounts to more than one person.

It is against our contract agreements with IS.

If you have more than one concurrent connection on your Uncapped account, please email [email protected] immediately so that we can change your password and or investigate the matter further.

This is a formal statement, as requested.

Kind Regards
MrBEEP.

and then

None of our Uncapped accounts are shared. Special or not.

If more than one concurrent connection is noted, it needs to be rectified.

This could be due to username / password theft or an account assignment error.

Either way, it is important we are made aware of the problem.

Kind regards
MrBEEP.

seven (7) years later and the accusations had not stopped. really strange...

I do not mind the odd shaping from time to time as it does not generally interfere with my day to day usage and streaming where throttling would! If I could find a perfect isp that does not apply either then i would not mind paying. i do not agree with shaping or throttling personally. I think it is a load of BS and means that uncapped is a lie in the end. But nothing I can do about that.

You say you have all advised me plenty of times, how about refreshing my memory and advising me of a good and reliable isp that is not going through some kind of dilemma or crappy period at the moment that would allow me to download the odd series or movie and still be able to game smoothly?

Unfortunately I can not afford a business account and I feel that it is very unfair that isp's basically force us into getting business accounts in order to get the service we are supposed to.

anyways... just one other thing, you say you are trying to be nice, just try and be aware of the tone of your messages at times as they do not always come across like that. I do not know everything, or even a lot so i would appreciate all the help i can get! If that comes in a helpful manner and not in a snarky message.

Contradiction. there is awesome internet, buy your own pipe. but since that is too expensive, you are subject to buying the best balance between economies of scale, this being money and available service. If normal uncapped is not good enough for whatever reason, then go business uncapped. If you can't afford business uncapped, well then you are stuck between the proverbial rock and the hard place.

Not necessarily, I just want the product as advertised, getting shaped to the point where a download is running at 0.3 to 4 kbps on a 10mbps line is ridiculous! It does not matter how you look at it. That is not shaping, that is purely just taking away the product we (me) are paying for.

It is no secret that during office hours you are shaped. That rule has been applied for all the years I have been with OW. If it's after hours, then fine there is a problem. But downloads during peak day are not going to work. And if they are on another ISP, then i am sure it is a matter of time before the curtain come down, and then that ISP is going to get burned. For those who can recall, it was approx 2 or 3 years ago when Afrihost initiated the uncapped fever wrt pricing etc, and when they couldn't maintain the loss anymore, they began shaping, which ended up in a similar "hate the ISP scenario". Just seems like we repeating in circles.

Agreed that things seem to go in circles and from one isp to the other but my downloads that I am referring to were at 7pm onwards. Hardly the time for shaping. AND even if I were downloading during the day, shaping a download to under 1kbps on a 10mbps line? seriously, that is F*****d

Point taken. Perhaps it is just me, but when this happened to Afrihost, it was quite difficult to watch (read) and the furore was relentless and ruthless. Just feels the same this time round. I can't argue with poor service of product.

Yeah I freaked out quite badly myself as I was with Afrihost at the time. Ended up with them cancelling everything for me. I have since apologised to them for my freak out and they understand why. I am fine with a bit of shaping if I go through a heavy use period where I donloaded whatever amount of gigs. But if I am getting shaped to under 1 kbps on a episode id like to watch that night, well that is just not acceptable.

All I want is for good service! This is the reason why I went with a 10mbps line in the first place. It just seems like all isp's are doomed in this country. Not even one who really delivers what they promise.
