OpenWeb ADSL Feedback Thread (Pt2)

Well, I'm streaming live HD content from the newly launched WWE Network without any problem on my side during office hours. Life is good on OW Gold (Normal) :D

I had to do a port recreate last night due to weird latency issues, but that seems to have fixed it.

I urge people again to move their line rental to a place like Axxess or Afrihost. There you can analyse your line and do a port recreate whenever you wish, plus it is cheaper than Telkom. You don't need a data account to do it.

Did the BF4 update earlier at more than half line speed, which is good.

I had a bad experience when afrihost managed my line. Reason being is that they just do not chase after solutions as much as you can on your own. At times they even closed tickets without the issue being resolved. So... I would advise against what you are recommending.

I have had great service from openweb. I am just a bit concerned about the crawling speeds of downloads over the last two days.

What is the time lag between getting off Telkom and joining one of those u mentioned?

Also, does your voice rental stay with Telkom?

I was unaware that you could just have your line with any ISP other than Telkom, can you? It is not advertised anywhere and the only place you see lines mentioned are in the "bundled offerings".

We will work on a 'package builder' of sorts that will clearly define the difference between accounts.

Our new website is currently in development. I have added this to the to do list.

We do not specifically shape anything overall. The system places priority on items such as browsing, business actions etc, and a low priority on p2p, torrents and similar. Everything else falls into a medium priority.

Your contention ratio, regional area and how busy the network is will then automatically perform the shaping based on the above.

If you pay more, you share with less people, which equals a lower contention ratio which means an improved overall experience.

Mrbeep, I'd really appreciate an answer on the above.

Also regarding the more you pay, the more you get principle...that's fine, I think we all understand the principle. However, I don't think OW is listening to customer requests or perhaps not providing a detailed enough answer. For example, some user may have a priority as downloading or streaming or VPN or torrents or news server or unshaped during peak. How does a user know whether Titan is better than Vanilla on streaming? They could be exactly the same on streaming performance but perhaps it's specifically better at being unshaped sooner. This is the kind of detail your customers are after.

Also, as a customer, it's hard to tell if my upgraded product is 'really' better than my previous one. There is no mechanism for users to see whether they are receiving a shaped, unshaped or partially shaped service at any point in time. So I can't tell for eg that I used to get unshaped around 6pm in evenings on vanilla but on gold I get unshaped around 5pm. This would be so useful to empower your customers.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

So basically, you buy capacity from IS. You then cut up the capacity into portions, and assign it to the various account levels.

e.g. Titan's portion of the capacity, being cheapest, has a high contention ratio
e.g. Everyday's portion, being a bit more, has a lower than Titan contention ratio
e.g. Gold's portion, being more, has a lower than Everyday contention ratio

etc.

Is this correct?

Further, each portion that gets assigned to the various account levels, gives a certain amount of accounts. For example, a product with "200 accounts remaining."

Correct?

mrbeep why don't you and PPP get together so that you can present your business case to him? his obviously very interested. must say this exceeds morbid curiosity from a subscriber. seems he is doing research for his own business case.

We buy bulk capacity and manage shaping based on our own rule set.

How about some info with regards to torrents maxing out at 20kbps on my 10mbps line for the last 3 days?

Are the daytime issues for some an IS problem, or an OW/shaper problem?

Is it up to IS or yourselves as to when the bulk capacity you buy becomes unshaped (i.e. 17h00)? I have read many reports that IS non business bandwidth becomes unshaped at 17h00, is this true?

I have just tested my Openweb vs Afrihost capped accounts in BF4 on PS4 and Afrihost sucked. The lag was much much more noticeable.

I would rather pay the few Rands more.
