OpenWeb ADSL Feedback Thread (Pt2)

Morning OpenWebbers,

We are trialing a new product profile.

If you have a Gold Uncapped (Original) account, and would like to take part in the trial, please mail [email protected] quoting this message.

The closing date for applications is Wednesday 30 April 2014.

Details:

* We have created an unshaped profile with the possible intention of converting all Gold Uncapped (Original) clients to this profile. This means no shaping 24 / 7, if the trial is a success.

We look forward to hearing from you.

I assume this doesn't apply to the Original Gold Uncapped Unshaped product?

As we do not share accounts, we cannot answer your question. Your question is based on a notion that we do share accounts.

We purchase capacity from our supplier, not accounts. We purchase x amount of capacity, and shape according to policies we put in place. We can choose how many ADSL lines connect to an account at once, as it is our capacity to contend and manage as we wish.

Perhaps you are enquiring about shared capacity? Yes, we most definitely share capacity, as do all other ISP's in South Africa. IPC Wholesale is too expensive to not place contention ratios into the mix.

We are working on recreating our product set to simplify matters.

The ultimate goal is:

Home Uncapped (One Flavour)
Business Uncapped Unshaped (Gold)
Business Uncapped Unshaped with Static IP

and a new product set which has not yet been launched in South Africa, which will fill a big void in the market.

Of course, current clients will be able to retain their package or migrate to the new ones.

More will follow soon.

This sounds exactly like how the the trial and 'nice' accounts mentioned above perform.

While you're at it, I would strongly motivate doing away with all other flavours of 'Gold' accounts - because they simply are not what they claim. There should be one Gold only, and that is the equivalent of a Business account from other ISPs.

Keep it simple and be honest, there is really no need to have so many different account types. Please stop with the marketing jargon to lure people in.

And please answer my question:

If you already have an unshaped account, this would be of no benefit to you

Hi @cableguy,

When will the trail come into effect?

Will we be getting new login details or will the current login be changed to the unshaped profile?

Regards,

*Have been following this tread with interest as I currently have no net access during the day, only time-outs but great afterhours speed, so I didn't complain. (Using a capped account during business hours - which is not ideal) This trail sounds like what Gold Original should be like, hopefully and gratefully..

As we do not share accounts...

If you didn't share accounts, logging in on the IS and SAIX portals would only show one active connection.

If accounts are not shared, there wouldn't be different people with the same account details, multiple active sessions, etc.

It is a reality that accounts are shared between people as has been proven again and again, before you had access to the IS portal blocked, and which is still evidenced on the SAIX portal, etc.

It is a fact that accounts are shared, let's not deny it.

Accepting this as fact, because it is, why are people given the same account details as others? If this is not sharing, what is it?

1. Are you telling us that this sharing is your form of 'contention ratio', where it comes down to the ADSL account level, and not that of the pool/capacity being shared between xyz amount of people?

2. Two people using one account at the same time... Do they both get full speed?

3. If you have your own capacity, why isn't each person assigned their own account?

We purchase capacity, not accounts. Capacity is in turn shared between y amount of people

No third party tool can be used to check OpenWeb usage stats. This information will be inaccurate.

By default, we do not log usage stats. If you would like your usage stats logged, kindly email [email protected] so that it can be activated.

As we are going in circles here, no further comments regarding this matter will be provided. We have answered your repetitive questions and see the matter as closed.

If clients are experiencing issues with their accounts, or would like to activate the self password management function on their account for added security, kindly email [email protected] so that this can be arranged. This will allow you to manage your own password.

Thank you for the reply, just another thought, will our existing account be kept active till after the trail in order to revert back if we wish to do so?

No. We will move you to the new account profile and the old one will be de-activated

So in one breath you are telling us you are sharing capacity at an account level because you can do as you wish BUT in another breath you are saying you are sharing capacity and not accounts.

I guess this is a case of you, choosing to word it differently, to fit your argument depending on which angle it takes... :erm:

This STILL does not clarify anything related to the account sharing. It doesn't matter if you purchase capacity and then in turn create YOUR OWN accounts within certain parameters. The reason is : Even if you purchase capacity and create a account which is limited at 10mb, you still allocate that account to 2 people and then the capacity is shared between the two of them. Does this make more sense? It's not important in what form u purchase it from IS/MTN. What is important is how you share your account with its limitation between people...

To all the okeys worried about account sharing; it's not a solution, it's not addressing the issue but maybe it gives you peace of mind is to request a password reset and see what happens. Any other user sharing the account should stop authenticating, right? Should see all those other IP's drop from SAIX but would suck if you end up with the authentication error though. ;)
(Sorry for the influx of work OpenWeb Support).

@Cableguy
Any reason why OpenWeb does not provide the self password management and usage monitoring as a default service on the client portal? The latter has been mentioned previously as being an old business decision but the former just seems a bit iffy for me - the less people are involved with managing my password, the better.
Out of curiosity, what is the naming convention for user accounts? On prior pages there's no discernable pattern, but surely there must be a standard to follow?

So nifty tool to see how you are being shaped: http://www.measurementlab.net/tools/shaperprobe

My results for the day:
DiffProbe release. January 2012. Build 1008.
Shaper Detection Module.

Connected to server *.**.***.***.

Estimating capacity:
Upstream: 11 Kbps.
Downstream: 591 Kbps.

The measurement will take upto 4.0 minutes. Please wait.

Checking for traffic shapers:

Upstream: Burst size: 35-34 KB;
Shaping rate: 37 Kbps.

Downstream: Burst size: 113-115 KB;
Shaping rate: 466 Kbps.

So Gold something or other (I cant remember my package name) is being shaped right now...

First thing you are going to jump on and say its not my problem is the 2nd hop with the Exchange, please be advised that according to Telkom who have tested the line and reset my port that there are no faults with my Exchange/line. However they have still logged a fault on their end for a technician to check the line.

Did you make use of the Telkom Guest account or the Afrihost Free 1gb and do a trace?

Cool :) Try that, if your second hop normalizes on the other account, then you'll have to get cableguy to trouble shoot that one. I just thought it might save you some time to try out another account first and rule that out :)

No. I did not think that far TBH. I just woke up form night shift :p. I will give it a go shortly...
