OpenWeb ADSL Feedback Thread (Pt2)

I'm on OW ADSL Gold Uncapped and are having endless issues lately, with browsing webpages during daytime on weekdays. Whether local or international pages, most of them start loading but never complete or simply time out.

After hours and over weekends browsing generally seems fine.

Already checked all possible settings on my ADSL router and checked that no devices on my network are trying to do updates or downloads.

Any ideas? I have logged a ticket with OW via email already but also want to make 100% sure the issue is not on my LAN.

As I've just experienced. It doesn't help that it doesn't say which server I'm connected to.

We do not use Speedof during troubleshooting, as it is extremely inconsistent.

We tested it on most ISP accounts, and it jumps up and down constantly. The latency has a lot to do with this. Latency and speedtests do not work well together

4 meg uncapped Silver.

At least the latency is good, but really? 512k speeds on a public holiday...

Weird. Just jumped up.

Unfortunately, lately it seems to be "the norm" with OpenWeb. I've been having these throttled periods for quite a while now. It is especially bad on Mondays, regardless of whether or not it is a public holiday (it actually seems a bit worse on public holidays, but that might just be because I expect it to be better). My unshaped account works at full speed, but the Gold shaped accounts are throttled to 15-50% of capacity. Very sad indeed.

Is this normal for a Gold Uncapped, on a public holiday 7pm?

Something is very wrong here. International is practically dead.

Any general faults in Cape Town?

OpenWeb was pretty much unusable most of the time today. After logging a ticket with support, they switched me to the MTN network, but for several reasons I moved back to the IS backbone. Once OpenWeb's open time** hit, everything was usable again. Where I couldn't download a 1.7MB file @ 11h00 this morning, I consumed 2GB in about 2 hours this evening (not a lot to some, but still shows effectiveness).

@Zoidberg - didn't have any issues earlier tonight, but noticing that connectivity is around 50% of what it should be. Ran a couple of sets of speedtests and every time Cape Town came back the worst. Getting the same kind of pattern on my capped accounts.

**I'm trademarking OpenWeb Open Time!

Hi folks

Sorry to post yet another of these questions, extensive searching hasnt really turned up satisfactory answers.

Do any of you have experience with both the Gold Uncapped and Gold Power Uncapped accounts ?

How did the daytime speeds you experienced on these two compare ?

Im aware that Gold is expected to be better than Gold Power, but in my experience the last few months, daytime speed has been basically good for browsing and little else. If daytime speeds are similarly slow for the Gold accounts, I was considering a move to a faster Gold Power package, so as to get a faster speed after hours at least.

Thanks for your feedback.

It's curious how I was playing a game on an EU server at 9PM and got a respectable latency of 200, yet now I can't play on that exact same server with a latency below 290. This is despite the fact that if I switch to my Mweb capped account i can still get 200ms on that server.

Come on guys. If anything needs to perform best, it's international latencies. My Openweb account used to give the best international latencies, even better than my capped Mweb account.

And no, I do not want to send in my account details to have it investigated because I'm just going to be given a new account, which is going to lead to months of headaches all over again. I don't currently want to have to jump from account to account every week because of poor performance.

Despite the occasional problem on my current account, it is the best I've had yet from Openweb. The problems just need to be fixed, not me being given another account.

I seriously do not recommend any openweb "gold" package. I cancelled and for (roughly) R20 or so more than "Gold Orange" I'm getting Axxess Business Uncapped at 4mbs, running 100% speed 100% of the time 100% of the day. The best part? No waiting period bull****. You can cancel an account on the 29th and have it end there and then.

Either OW need to lower prices AND increase performance (daytime especially is wtf) or I absolutely advise you look somewhere else. Even the Axxess 10mbs HOME uncapped performed better on average (perfect browsing/youtube daytime) but the business package is bliss. No shaping, no throttling, no bull**** instant on the dot now the account works, and hey, no weird username juggling either.

I do not recommend OW for anything at all. By the same token I do not recommend Internet Solutions for anything at all. The latter is strictly for stuck-up corporates with draconian IT policies

People used to say that Telkom was the handbrake to SA's progress.. let me tell you, its IS and Openweb who are the newest handbrake to SA's economy.

Several LEGITIMATE BUSINESS WEBSITES take 3-5 minutes to load today...
My iPad says it cannot see the AppStore again
And as per usual, when OPENWEB OPEN TIME rolls around at 5pm, everything's fine.

Just get an Afrihost Business account. Running a business account on a home uncapped is silly in anycase.

Tell that person(s) who is sharing your account with you to take it a little slower ;)
