OpenWeb ADSL Feedback Thread (Pt2)

I think we all know accounts are being shared, but I gotta say, I'm still not entirely convinced about the whole star rating business. I'm sharing my account with a very light user, but I'm still pulling roughly 300gb a month with no slowdowns.

BTW, I figured out what my p2p issues were about. It seems that after a recent uTorrent update, if I limit my upload speed in any way, my download speeds die almost completely. I don't understand why it's doing this, because I used to always limit my uploads to 20kb/s and had no issues. Anyone else experiencing this?

Have a look on the afrihost business link, same problem after updating the torrent client.

"Ye I don't think what they doing is illegal but it is a very unethical way to go about business, in order for them to make the most money. It makes for ALOT of support and that's why people continuously cry about SUDDEN slow speeds and then get given a new username, and all is fine again."

I'm dealing with the same thing right now, my day time speeds aren't even 10% of my speed after 17h00. I contacted OpenWeb support and explained that every time I complain about day time speeds they give me new account details and everything is speedy again, and that this time I want it corrected permanently because that is what they advertised to me and it is what I am paying for. I was then told that the way to resolve this is to upgrade to a "Business" account :/ so I must give you more money for a service you're already supposed to be supplying and one that I am already paying R729 for every month??

If you want torrents faster in uTorrent, disable utp. utp completely kills torrent speeds, BUT then if you do other stuff on the internet utorrent will not slow down like it does with utp enabled.

Those Business account are a little shady too, daytime throughput over p2p is high but YouTube, Browsing, SSH is sluggish and unreliable. To those who blame DNS, server etc my 20GB Connection account works.

Might be MTN's network, but support says everything is fine.

The only thing that computes logically :)

Very interesting. This is exactly what is happening. It makes the most sense out of all the theories.:)

Everytime stars drop they give you a "new" account (username and pass) off the bottom of the list of usage which is probably being used by someone who just checks their mail etc. That way they are utilizing their IS bandwidth to the max and its the most profitable for them. It's actually quite sneaky.

Can I patent this conspiracy theory? :p

It fits in well with all the other conspiracy theory that are out there. Like the idea that OW does not monitor usage yet when people complained of slow speed support happily says "we see you are getting great throughput on this account, would you like to upgrade to a higher package so you can download more?"
If you dont monitor usage how the f@ck can support say "you getting great throughput"?

Been working in IT Support since 2003 - I think my nose is "attuned" to IT bullsh@t

I am now pretty sure OpenWeb accounts use the star rating system. A friend had really slow internet - lent them my capped account, they tried their OpenWeb account after two days, still slow, then they left it for two weeks, connected again yesterday and it's super fast again.

Dum dum duummmmmm
Bang bang :D

I have not used my openweb account all day. I have now just logged on and guess what? it's having the life shaped out of it.
Surprise surprise
Absolutely ludicrous.

"I just moved to Openweb and my connection is fast! "

Wait. You still on 5 stars :D

I'm seriously confused.
Surely a 10mbps business uncapped unshaped account is all a person needs. (R999.00 per month)
Why would there then also be 10mbps business platinum at R3895.00 per month?
Is the 5 static ip addresses worth R2896.00 per month?
People on the business uncapped unshaped accounts complaining about slow response will be advised to go the platinum route.
Another thing, Openweb will never ever manage Telkom lines, if they do, they have no one else to blame.

Youtube extremely slow, gmail failing to connect... anyone else having issues?
