I am trying out a new OpenWeb Gold 4MB line after I saw generally good reports on MyBB. The performance hasn't been great though - so I took it for a test on Speedtest.net.

I am surprised to see that the ISP comes up as "Digichilli Phase I".

At the moment the speed is really awful: http://www.speedtest.net/result/941193912.png (4MB line!!)

I have access to an MWEB uncapped account too - so on Monday I'll do a head to head test on the same line and report back.

But its not looking good.

That's just the test accounts. Mr.Beep also provided me with one (Digichilli Phase I) on Friday evening after I had slow speeds. Just to put your mind at ease, OW doesn't make use of "Digichilli" or something, they have at least 3-4 different types of backbones for users. Depending on what you need for downloading purposes etc, Mr.Beep can suggest an account to suit your needs. So you won't get a "Digichilli" account, don't worry. Just thought I had to point it out, to help you clear up some confusion.

As was said above. Just try a different backbone. IS seems to be good when seacom is up.

Um - well I was on a standard uncapped OpenWeb account last month (IS based), and it paled in comparison with MWEB. I moved to the OpenWeb Gold this month thinking it would compare better - it does cost an extra 200 rand. I am struggling at the moment to see what I get for the extra cost. But to be fair I am not comparing different packages on the same line & the same modem, so I won't be too critical - I will check that out first.

I also tested the Gold uncapped on Friday evening, and it crawled. So now I am in limbo as what to take. Mr BEEP don't you want to make that mistake again and send me the 4mb platinum uncapped test account, I promise I will not let you know that it is flying

OK - done a test on MWEB versus OW Gold - and it seems my line at home is probably the culprit - not Open Web (thanks Telkom!! - my wife is now also complaining that there is a lot more noise on calls). There isn't much to choose between OWeb & MWEB on a decent line & modem using no more than basic speed tests via speedtest.net . OWeb is more expensive though I suppose - but thats a different discussion.

Thanks for the offer Mr Beep - for now I don't need to bother you.
