OpenWeb - How are the uncapped preparations coming?

This is home use, it's just that my working hours means I'm often at home during afternoons.

MrBeep - how about this:
384k 6pm-6am + full weekends
128k during the day but local routes (MS Updates are also local) are not throttled, thus remain at 384k

this is the only slightly sane idea in this entire thread... but naturally we wont see it happen.

considering "after" office hours as till 19:00 is only taking into account a small percentage of the population. a gross understatement in my books. and a stupid mistake to make. you throw someone a bone and give them a package for slightly less than your competitor and hope for the best. and still they milk it by throttling the account during certain hours. ;/ only ISP's in SA can think of a stupid idea like this. they also make a major contribution as to why south africa will forever be seen as a third world country. they give you a slice of bread but charge you for the entire loaf. even the education minister from england said our ADSL prices are ten times of what their's are at in england (and was shocked by the prices aswell - said it was killing education in south africa... way to go telkom!) ... and no excuse about "infrastructure" is gonna cut it anymore. ISP companies in south africa just like milking the population for all it's worth. they dont care about getting everyone online for as cheap as possible. they just want to make millions.

and a small business lesson. if that is your reason for going into business ? simply to make money and not doing it cause you have a passion for it ? you will never succeed. and eventually you'll fall flat on your face and no one will even look your way to help you up.

personally i cant wait till google gets their cable in SA i dont care how childishly immature telkom and their buddies get over the prices going too low for their tastes and they think it's bad for business? for all i care google can take over the ISP providing in SA. i dont care if telkom goes to hell in the process. they will most prolly deserve it, at least with google we'll get rid of these retarded ideas like cap and throttle etc. sounds like a engine, only problem is in a engine thottles increase performance.. not kill it.

A good analogy would be:

R599 ---> i'll give you a toyota (I'm glad im atleast getting a toyota)

R899 ---> i'll give you a ferrari

Except in this case, that Toyota turns into a bicycle with square wheels for half the day.

why throttle down to 64k?

Keep the linespeed at 384k without any limits or thresholds for R599.

Now that would be a great deal.

Right now i don't think its viable for small isp's to offer something like that. There are expensive bottlenecks still in the system which they don't have the money to bypass. We will have to wait a few months for things to change, but i think they will.

but yeah, i dream of the day i can pay something like R499 for pure uncapped 384k.

It shouldnt be to long.

384k should be put out to pasture dammit  as well as 512k.

We must stop with this Mickey Mouse internet in South Africa.

Sounds more like a nightmare to me. When I dream, I see us paying less than that for uncapped 8Mb/s.

The difference between my dream and your dream is mine will actually come true in the next 12 months. :p

But within 4 years i also fully expect 8Mb/s uncapped for R499 or less.

Everyone here must know what speed their line syncs at...

If your line cannot do 4Mbps, then the Openweb option is a perfect solution.

One can then cut the price further:

Do 1 is R199 + R131 line rental = R330

Just DSL and line rental, would be R152 + R131 = R283

So, 1gig international and 10gigs local is R47

That R47 can go towards an uncapped 384k such as the R599 Openweb package.

R599 + R283 = R882 for 384k uncapped...

There is simply no comparison between capped Do1,2 or 3 with uncapped.

I am pointing out that one can cut the price of uncapped 384k to R882 all inclusive.

The nearest competition, like Axxess, sells uncapped 384 at R899 for satelite and R999 for fibre.

R999 + R199(Do1) + R131(line rental)= R1329 or R447 more than my suggestion.

Satelite anyone? R899 + R199 + R131= R1229 or R347 more.[/QUOTE]

Why the hell not? All capped ADSL packages allow it. Damn pathetic.

Because then everyone would share a single account.

But perhaps if we could have congruent connections but the bandwidth is shared, then that would be awesome. Get a 384 kbit uncapped account, chances are both parties will not use the internet at the same time, unless someone is downloading.

And if you think about why not it's pretty obvious, imagine an eat all you can buffet and you bring 10 friends, pay for only one person, and share. That just wouldn't make any money, but sure if you order a single meal the restaurant probably wont mind if you share the single plate you payed for.

What you could do is share the thing...

He uses the username/password even days, you the odd days.

I looked into that with a friend, thought it turned out he couldn't get ADSL....
