OpenWeb - How are the uncapped preparations coming?

880 is out of my price range + I would also have to have a 1 gig account some where else to cover those 64k periods BUT I still think that it is a good option and Neotel != ADSL so you can't really compare... this account is for some one like me who wants to do some downloading and play games at night/on the weekend.

Oh and why is Telkom installing your link to SEACOM.... surely that is not right ?

The honest reality is that business takes preference during business hours. If you need a fast line for business then this is not the product for you. For home use, you can get a 1 Gig prepaid or account package to use during business hours.

This is home use, it's just that my working hours means I'm often at home during afternoons.

MrBeep - how about this:
384k 6pm-6am + full weekends
128k during the day but local routes (MS Updates are also local) are not throttled, thus remain at 384k

Hey Friends,

So far so good. I have further details on the products that will be offered:

384k Uncapped:

Daytime speeds will be 64k. (We are aware of the fact that this is a tad on the slow side, but we will monitor the network, and increase this speed as the network grows)

After Hour Speeds: 19:00pm until 07:00am, Monday to Friday, and 19:00pm Friday until 07:00am Monday speeds will be at 384k.

After Hour Benefits: The account will run at the full 384k speed, on the Seacom cable, allowing P2P and torrents. It will be EXCELLENT for gaming and VOIP applications.

Estimated Price: R599 per month incl VAT

384k - 10GB ADSL Account:

This account will run at full 384k speeds, irrelevant of time and day. The account will be mildly shaped during office hours, and completely unshaped after hours and on weekends. P2P and torrents will be allowed.

Estimated price: R349 per month incl VAT

Status Update: We are waiting for Telkom to install the last part of the network. Per usual, they are still playing the delaying game. However, they have indicated that it will be fully installed by no later than end August. I will keep folks updated as to whether they continue engaging in their anti-competitive behaviour.

These products will be exclusive to OpenWeb.

Kind regards
MrBEEP

Fair enough, i understand you are stepping into unknown territory here and so don't want to promise to much and then disappoint everyone when you are losing money and have to raise prices.

But in saying that, once you have idea what the average user "use" is, please adjust speeds/prices accordingly. 128k would be better, perhaps it will prove to be feasible.

No!, we're talking about Uncapped here, not 1gig Prepaid.

all in all, R999 was Uncapped express 386k throttled to 128k during the day with 5gb per 10 days threshold!

Now... not sure about the threshold, but same thing strangled to 64k for R400 less....

I'd rather wait a little longer to see what's better, and if it doesn't improve by the end of the year, I'll take Neotel with their issues @ R999 uncapped!

Neotel vs Openweb... Neotel Wins vs Openweb Fail!

Please guys, don't get me wrong! Openweb is a preferred ISP in my view! Had a good year or two with them! Neotel, just offers a better uncapped deal with no shaping, just tower congestion!

Yeah 7 is a little late for me. I would hate to be waiting an hour everyday.

I'd gladly pay R800 for Uncapped 4mb throttled to 512k during the day (should they insist on throttling!)

Like that's gonna happen anytime soon :)

Considering that openweb offers a 4mg after hours throttled during the day for R1500 pre Seacom, makes me wonder what Openweb can offer this same thing for over Seacom! Half the price? I reckon R800 is not quite half price but definitely something I'd grab with both hands and feet!

Hey Friends

Thank you for the feedback.

We will definitely try and make the After Hours time from 18:00pm until 06:00am, as I believe this will suit users better.

Please understand, we are launching it with a 64k daytime speed. This is slow, and a slight step back, however, if all goes well, we will increase this speed if the network can handle it.

This package will not suit all, but there are many users that would like the freedom of Uncapped for under R600.

If an all day speed of 384k is what you need, then I would suggest you consider the 384k - 10GB ADSL package for an estimated R349 per month.

As for larger accounts, we will be looking at these in the near future. We are also considering Local / International split accounts from the first MB, but these will not be part of the initial offering.

Kind regards

Thank you MrBEEP.

One question though: How about offering a 10GB package with a 512 connection for around R600?? PLEASE PLEASE DO THAT:) - If you do ill be the first to signup!!

Why would you throttle a paid for 10GB account? 10GB is 10GB no matter how fast you use it ???

MrBEEP thank you for coming up with new ideas. I realise that not ideal for a lot of users, but at least you are trying to shake things up a bit. It is more than can be said for a lot of ISP's

He is probably selling those 10 gig accounts below cost or at cost, and will make a profit when someone doesnt use up all their gigs. This is common practice, and i think quite telling with regard to the cost price for him.

Yes seacom is here, but it heavily favors big connection buys which MR Beep cannot afford (i would assume).

There is also the heavy IPconnect costs which makes it very expensive at this stage to offer well priced packages.

This is a step up, and openweb is taking it.

That may be, but when will such a step become clearly visible in daylight so that everyone understands that it is indeed a step up, and not the first step of a down escalator? :D

If you work out how many gigs you could get from one of these new 384k uncapped accounts it works out to be a huge step for those who can't afford the 4 meg express accounts.

But i know what u mean. Full speed all the time for R499 would have been a big step. This i'm hopeful will come when webafrica, but more so IS, get their systems fully online. I'm also expecting neotel to offer an adsl product soon (just guessing). They are making no ground with their wireless rubbish and i think for them to get some real numbers they gonna have to move into the adsl market, even if it means using the telkom network.

I usually use my internet after hours, but would be nice if I can download during the day at 384kbps too with my netbook.....

Let's give it some time....

hmm this could possibly make me say goodbye to my axxess express account .

I'm looking for an account, High speed un-shaped 2G

1. 384KBS ADSL During office hours, 4MBS ADSL evenings& weekends.
2. 2G Data, pay for Data used thereafter.
3. UN-SHAPED
4. No filtering, fire-walling or caching.
5. Incoming connections allowed.
6. One fixed IP, facility to update my domain DNS entries.
7. 2 concurrent connections.(fixed & mobile)

I would rather have quality and speed, and pay a reasonable price <R100 per Gig for data. Can Open Web help me, quanto costo ?
