Openweb launches free calls

Openweb launches its ‘Free Calls Beta’ service, offering subscribers free landline calls to South Africa and 66 other countries
 
Man, I'm so impressed with THIS company.

Can't say I've REALLY seen anything bad coming from them.

At last, congrats Openweb for being a leader, hope others will follow soon.
 
This free calling service from Openweb comes on the back of various other innovative offerings from the ISP, including its 384 Kbps and 512 Kbps Uncapped ADSL Gold upgrade for R29 per month and its 4 Mbps Gold upgrade priced at R99 per month.

Can someone please link to OpenWeb site where these are been offered? Also what software are they using to make voice calls from PC to landlines?

OpenWeb FREE Calls Beta allows you to call to South African land line phones, and 66 other countries for free! This is not PC to PC calling like Skype. This is much better! This is PC to Phone calling.

Yes, that's right. You can call from your PC to any land line phone in South Africa and 66 other countries at no charge!

How do I qualify?

You have to be an OpenWeb client with an active OpenWeb ADSL account. This promotion is open to ALL Active OpenWeb ADSL clients.

How do I start calling?

Login to your control panel here with Internet Explorer: http://cp.openweb.co.za

On the right hand side, click on 'OpenWeb FREE Calls'.

Click on ' Request a Free Account'.

Your free account details will be emailed to your registered email address within 8 hours.

Once you have your login details, launch the Sip Phone, and allow the ActiveX to install.

You will then login to the phone and voila! The world is yours to call.

Please note, this is a beta service. It may be changed or discontinued at any time. If the service is a success, we will create a more permanent facility for our clients in the future.

Hmmm... too good to be true. I will just have to jump ship. Sorry Afrihost . Anyways, how does this work. Telkom might bankrupt them...lol
 
any ideas on the voice quality? I remember using programs like voipstunt but the quality was just not as good as skype so on their unlimited world package now for about 100 bucks a month. this does sound good if the quality is up to an acceptable level ;)

EDIT: just remembered skype unlimited world does not include south africa, so this is actually a really great product offering!
 
just had a look at the openweb site, their per gig pricing is double afrihost... so not gonna make it worth while for me... good if ur an IS uncapped subscriber though since they are about a rand cheaper than afrihost ;)

mmmm so I take it no Ubuntu Linux support... or can we use our own Ubuntu alternative soft Sip phone?

Ja, it sounds like it launches via a web page.... using ActiveX.

I have requested my details I will have to play around with it and get back to you.
 
i think from Gary's email above, it is a IE-based activeX controller driven application--not a third-party app, if that is what you are asking. (Edit: Geesh, Gary beat me to this)

Perhaps, we can ask MrBEEP to clarify?
 
Tried it last night..

Ended a convo just shy of 2hours to a local number..

Data usage is steady 10kB both ways.
Sound quality is excellent!

Receiving party did complain off a beeping/poor/crackling noise. Unchecking noise cancellation seems to fix that.

Well done openWeb!
 
Astonishing - if this lasts it'll be amazing, good on you Openweb.

Hoping its not a marketing campaign to entice customers only to cut the service later on.

+1 it is going to be a wait and see - anyone tried calling overseas ?
