This is my first month on Openweb 384k uncapped standard. Newsgroups have been crawling along at 2kB/s- 6kB/s consistently since the beginning of the month going up to 10kB/s-15kB/s over weekends. I do not notice any difference after hours, at least not between 8pm and 12pm. Http downloads are currently also crawling between 3kB/s and 5kB/s. It's close to dial up speeds.

Its slow overall, but considering that I have already downloaded 16 GB on this account, thus looking at +/-40GB for the month, and considering the alternative (paying R760 for a 40GB account) i do think this account is great value for money, despite the slow speeds.

Considering the higher speeds and consequent higher monthly data usage, would it be worth it to upgrade to gold? Feedback from anyone on Openweb 384k gold would be appreciated.

You sound like something is clogging your pipes.... try talking to MrBeep. I've not had an OW account running that slow, so there is clearly something wrong.

I think if he is using the IS news server and downloading uncached content, then he'll get those speeds. He didn't really specify which news server he is using.

On uncached IS I get around..... 0.

Check the rest of his post. HTTP is bad as well. Http downloads shouldn't be bad at all.

Hi, i'm using cheapnews.eu, afaik they have good retention rates. MrBeep has responded to my email and put me on vb. I'm not at home so I haven't switched accounts, I will update as soon as this is done. Thanks for the feedback!

Cool, I'm on VB as well and newsgroups perform superbly with it, hope its the case for you as well :)
 
Anyone care to report what they currently getting on VB Gold 4MB newsgroups - I'm sitting at 150KB/s

About the same, must be an issue somewhere. Had to switch to my capped account for my IPL highlights on youtube. Can't wait to go back to the afterhours account next month :D

The afterhours account is awesome, I tried it out last month to see if it would annoy me only having real internet from 7 to 7, but I hardly noticed it because I'm at work anyway during the day. Its a bit pricey, but worth it in my opinion. I think i've been on all the networks on gold (I think Keoma is so sick of me already hehe), but the afterhours account is just better because its unshaped (its on IS btw). Also if you lucky enough to have a 10Mb line, you can make full usage from your line.

Geesus dude are you still pondering??!!! DO IT!!! Yes, weekends rock and roll from 7pm Friday evening till 7am Monday morning!!!

EDIT: I'm sure MrBeeps could put you on the after hours uncapped immediately after a small pro rata charge has been paid for the more expensive package...

Latency Seems very erratic today. This morning I was getting good latency in wow but this afternoon its bouncing around like crazy. Anyone else experiencing this?
I'm on the IS backbone
 
Qrox, got the same issue. I am also on IS and since I got home from work this afternoon, my downloads are between 10KB/s and 39KB/s. Mr Beep says he cannot see anything wrong with my account. Phoned telscum, they said nothings wrong with the network in my area, but I got full speed with my Afrihost Free account and drip and drap with Openweb..

There is currently a Telkom backbone fault causing issues. Engineers are attending.

Thanks - I'll pop you a mail next weekend - mostly want to check the streaming capibilites in Boxee, as with Gold it buffers to much in the evenings.
