Hey all

Just received my Openweb login and password, plus DNS addresses, but nothing in terms of other router config details. Can anyone offer a lad some assistance here?

Is it PPPoE? VPI/VCI settings? Encapsulation LLC? MTU number?

Thanks in advance
M

Hi M

Herewith:

PPPoE
VPI: 8
VCI: 35
Encapsulation: LLC

MTU: (Leave it on default)

If this is a new ADSL line, please ensure Telkom has verified it! Contact them on 0800 375 375 to have this done.

Enjoy!

Hey MrBeep

Ta for the immediate response! Gosh, it took me ages to get anything out of Screamer. Excellent first impression.

Might I suggest including this info in the "welcome" e-mail?

Cheers
M

We will update it asap!

How long did it take for your account to be activated?

Credit card is instant activation, EFT is manual (business hours).

Thank you for you reply. I have paid via credit card but Keoma Wright mailed me and said that it will only be activated the 1st of June, If I wanted it activated now I must pay another R149.

Well, just give an update. I got an IS based account yesterday to test with. The speeds really don't seem that much better using Jdownloader to download files via Megaupload. On my gold account, the speeds still maxes out on 11KB/s and with the IS based account, it went full tilt, although after about 10 minutes it plummeted a bit to below 10KB/s. Will test some more. However, browsing on both accounts are blistering fast, the gold account also yields faster download speeds on nzb's. If my HTTP downloads can just run at full speed, I'll be 110% happy, but I'm still happy with the service I'm getting out of my gold account, its just this little niggle that needs resolving. :)

EDIT: I just switched back to the IS account and its running full speed. I wonder what is wrong with the gold account then ? :wtf:

StoneCold, you are not using a Standard account at all.

Both accounts you currently have is on a Gold network.

Well, if that's the case then how come my original gold account is on the 41.216 IP range and the new you gave me is on the 196.210. range. Doing a Speedtest with the 196. account says the ISP is Internet Solutions. If my eyes deceive me, then I'm sorry, but doing a speedtest with the 41.216 says its on Neology ADSL IP Club member. In my opinion, they can't be on same network.

I can send you an email again if you like ?

Let me know.

Gold is not 'a' network. It is an account profile that has a lower contention ratio and less shaping than the Standard network.

MrBeep, how about a transparent list of services that are shaped, the extent and hours the shaping occurs so that I can make an educated decision before upgrading?

If I recall, here was no mention in the T&S with your standard uncapped packages being so heavily shaped (read: useless) during office hours and being completely throttled to 15-35KB/s during those times for even normal things like surfing, Linux and MS updates during the day.

Well, I think my speed problems are related to my exchange, cause since three o clock this afternoon I couldn't download anything international. Megaupload and rapidshare downloads aren't connecting and I've been downloading 10 minutes on a 3.1mb file on local, at a WHOPPING rate of 3.5KB/s - 6KB/s MAX. Words cannot describe my frustration. If it isn't resolved tomorrow, then my local Telkom Direct is my first stop Monday morning. A friend of mine on the same exchange, with 384k as well, is suffering from the same bs. Either their shafting us 384k users, or that DSLAM of ours fried itself properly now.

My http download this weekend is around 200k/s so far. Maybe it's the month end slowness again?

Hey Stonecold. How you doing?

Do you remember upheavel? :) You guys still playing in BFBC2?

Comment on Openweb UNCAPPED 4096:
I was a staunch IS supporter for years, but the past few weeks has been sheer torture. Me Beep suggested I rather look at the MWEB Gold account (yes, it will cost more), but jumping from daytime speed of around 35k/sec to 380 k/sec is a helluva welcome change. It's the same type of data from the very same server, just downloading via a different connection. Maybe its time IS evaluate their shaping and throttling scripts / rules / policies. Or maybe this is my lucky week ! (That the case, I better remember to buy a lotto ticket or two!).
Thanks to Openweb for good customer service!

Received an email today offering a day free on my new 4meg gold account, was on afrihost and been waiting for my new openweb account to go active, was soo happy :)

And speeds are great loving it.Thanks MrBeep for all the help and info over the last month I don't mind paying a little more for a better service, and with openweb so far this is exactly what I'm getting.

Anyone looking for a good serivice alternative then openweb is the way to go.
Thanks again Keoma.

@Redeemer30, what kinda speeds are you getting? Full line speed or just part thereof?

I canceled my Axxess account and have not signed up with another ISP for uncapped yet as I'm unsure who to go with...For now I'm living off pre-paid...oh the pain :-D.

I don't mind paying the extra bucks for Gold uncapped but am very hesitant to just jump on-board and pay up as I've been burnt with both Afrihost and Axxess's uncapped offers :-(

@Chavez
Depends what you wanna use it for, I'm getting about 400-420KB/s http downloads using downthemall in firefox. Not using torrents on downstorm but can do a test for you. Also intend on using it for WoW but not logged on today will check it tmrw.

But compared to afrihost this is like day and night :) And like the fact that if you have problems MrBeep is always willing to help.

If you want you can pm me anytime with more questions.
