Openweb Uncapped Feedback

I think in or fairness that this is a product targeted at numerous user types. And what is shaped for one person may not suite another. Bias to ones own needs and saying rapidshare over torrents and vice a versa, even be it news servers, etc isn't going to help the overall product. Discretion should be given to all uses and time of day which is appropriate for those uses.

Actually, the problem is that ISP's don't state what is shaped and to what extent.

They should stipulate sites / services and ports that are shaped and to what degree and the hours in the day they are shaped.

Saying "Uncapped 4Mbit" and "Some ports are shaped" is not good enough IMO. I was under the impression that torrents, rapidshare and such services are shaped during the day, granted.

The issue comes down to how vague it is, I mean how many times must I have my port reset and get excuses like "IS shape ports" when I enquire why it takes so goddamn long to buffer a Youtube stream (not HD) even at 1am is not good enough.

I dig Openweb but I'm a little miffed at the quality of service of legitimate traffic. Leave http alone and throttle the excessive P2P users but freaking leave Youtube, Gametrailers, Ubuntu updates and other stuff alone.

I totally agree with you nihilist. I feel that basic everyday protocols should not be shaped!

I also agree that we are being vague with the definition of our shaping. I will have this rectified shortly. I am just waiting for the final information from our new provider before we edit the site.

In all honesty, I do not agree with the fact that a company offers Uncapped ADSL, and then places heavy limits on what folks can do on their account. And we will always be fighting for the best uncapped quality for our clients. If our provider cannot provide it, then we will move on.

We have being doing tests on our new providers network since early April, and all I can say is, nice!

Any chance you could smack IS around and give us a tiny bit of decent int, pulling down a measly 60kB/s on int newsserver.

Firstly, kudos for taking this seriously and replying.

I don't know about your company name, Openweb but I take the "Open" part quite literally, perhaps I'm just a Linux geek :) It would be great if your accounts could have information about what is shaped, hours, the backbone you use etc; so that your clients could make accurate decisions about what package is suited for them. I'm also still a bit undecided about these "Gold" accounts as from what I recall they're shaped less, that too is vague. And to be honest I don't think I should have to pay an extra R100 (I could be wrong here) for a service upgrade where the original account should be working fine already with commonly used protocols and services. I'd assume Gold would have a bit less shaping and allow lower latency for gaming, not improving Youtube.

Please consider being as open as possible, especially with this new network plan you've mentioned. I"m sure it will only improve your already great service and also enable you to spend less time dealing with "my account sucks, what's wrong?" emails :D

In summary, I just want to know if it does what it says on the tin, but I need a label first ;)

Thanks again MrBeep.

I'm finding that pages aren't loading without refreshes or seem to load only part and then say DONE in the status bar, needs a refresh to complete. Is this just me or are others experiencing this?

This might seem like a weird solution, but I was getting constant timeouts / stalls on web pages in Firefox (both v3.5.7 and v3.6.2) and timeouts / retries in DownThemAll or Flashget. This resulted in an effective 40 kb/s download speed in Flashget on a 4 Mbit line. This is running on Windows XP SP2 (32-bit). Seems like something is screwed in my Windows network stack (yes, I did a 'netsh int ip reset').

Then I installed Ubuntu Linux v10.04 in a VirtualBox VM (using bridged networking) and started using Firefox with FlashGot and wget (currently also experimenting with wxdfast). The browsing and downloading (at least for HTTP) was much improved :) (got at least 350 kb/s when I still had International bandwidth (using a IS local account)).

I think it's time for me to re-install Windows, but until then, I'll keep my Ubuntu VM (and will continue using it anway once I have re-installed).

At around1900 last night I got a peak torrent download of 329K (still nothing close to Afrihost's 420K). That lasted for about 30min and then all night long it was back to its snail speed of avg 16K.

Axxess users are in the same camp it seems but from all the reports they have given its all due to IS

Yip, the exact same here...this bladdy IS account is not much different than a ride on the Cobra at Ratanga Junction...it's a blast for about one and a half minutes, but boy does it bring you back to earth quickly :) - It's actually sad that the IS resellers are not doing something about it. I can only email MrBeep so many times, getting max speeds is not my problem, I'll be happy with 2MB...it's this bladdy yo yo that I cannot take!

Proff

cant we do something about IS? we all (nd i mean all of us on the IS uncapped product) pay for a service were not getting.
im not taking openweb in the face here, this is a IS problem.
liek most of the users have said, shape all you want but leave http and normal web act alone!
im on the 4meg uncapped product and dont even get 128k, wtf is up with that!? how can they advertise a product that they cant deliver. how does mweb get to deliver the same product with better speeds and and throughput. i thought IS was much bigger?
this is unlawfull practice in my books (or at least i think so, maybe many will agree with me). i think someone should write to teh ATA (atvertizing standards authority), coz a product is being offored and not delivered.

and again tnx to koema for going out of your way but thsi cant go on, we cant pay for something were not getting

Anyone able to see their SAIX usage? When I check using my username, I am still getting the blank values. Name doesn't work for IS, so am assuming the SAIX usage should show something...

It's an openwebturbo address...

The initial advert, no disrespect intended at OpenWeb, was "Torrents and P2P will be shaped..." No mention was made of Rapidshare and Hotfile. Also basic browsing during the day is as slow as one legged tortoise in an Olympic 100M dash. Even late evenings the speed is poor. I 100% agree that we should know exactly what shaping will be implemented on the new accounts, what time periods are applicable for throttling of news servers, torrents, rapidshare and the like. Also I'm a big Gamer, and my ping on a 4MB line is always over 100, which does wonders for in-game hit detection...

As consumers we make decisions based on information presented to us. So before proceeding with any purchase of a new product we need to be made 100% aware of not only the Pro's, but also the Cons of the service. Also suddenly deciding to shape a service halfway through a month is BS IMO. We pay for a months service, any amendments made should be done at the start of the new Month!

But hats off to Openweb for backing their clients and trying to provide us with better alternatives!
