Still choppy on Altech :/

Anyone having a similar experience?

Have e-mailed MrBEEP for help :p

Hey Friends,

We had major issues last night due to a Telkom cable break.

Please reboot your router this morning.

If you are having DNS issues, you may set your DNS to:

Primary DNS: 8.8.8.8
Secondary DNS: 8.8.4.4

All should now be sorted after a router reboot

Hi MrBEEP,

Is there a problem currently on the Altech network?

I'm not getting very stable speeds or any decent throughput (averaging between 70-200bkb/sec on a 6mb line).

I can’t even access speedtest.net to do a test.

I also dropped you a e-mail.

Exactly the same story. Have you tried any other ISPs to see if the problem is isolated?

Whenever I reboot, the speeds jump to 400kB/s and stay there for a few seconds before going down to 50-250kB/s and it's pretty unstable.

My Afrihost account isn't exactly an improvement though but the problem isn't between me and the DSLAM (my line stats are basically perfect) so I'm out of ideas. I know there's a general Telkom fault but no-one really seems to be complaining so I'm assuming it's an issue with peering somewhere.

Although... as I said... no idea...

Also called Telkom and asked for a port reset but to no avail...

Just did a test on a standard Telkom account, getting full speed, no problems.

Altech (After another reboot) :

Okay speedtest shows I get close on 4mb, but when doing real world downloads (did a test from nvidia.com) I'm not getting anywhere close to 400kb/sec, I'm doing 160kb/sec odd now.

Yup. Try doing a speedtest after browsing for a while, it soon switches to a much more realistic figure:

Let me show you what happens streaming a YouTube video, for example...

On Afrihost:

On Altech:

Like I said, it runs at full line-speed for a few seconds and then drops to around 100kB/s on both accounts. It doesn't make sense. I could understand it on ONE backbone but on both IS and Altech?

Where are you situated? Garden Route, maybe? :p

Was gonna show my networx graphs (awesome tool, I use it too! :D ) but Keoma mailed me back with a different account.

Well it speaks for itself :

IS and I don't get along. It's not exactly conducive to smooth video playback in Skype (which is my number 1 reason for uncapped, next to Steam and gaming :p).

I'll rather just wait it out. Altech has been the best uncapped experience I've had so far and I'm not going to give it up easily (that is, unless this persists, but since my issue isn't solely with Altech, I think it may be Telkom-related).

Glad your issues have been resolved though :)

Altech going nicely this side, thanks MrBeep for the switch and am still amazed how fast you seem to respond to emails.

I am not a heavy user but twice a year i would go over my cap and that whole admin and extra cost thing annoyed me so i changed to uncapped.

I was with Axxess on a 384 uncapped account, and left becuase whenever i played my fave game all of a sudden there would be lag and and bang im dead.

changed to open web and it is a disaster, the service from the suport team is good, but the product is cr@p, on openweb youtube is useless, my faveorite game is not just laggy is dosent even work. even opening the openweb.co.za page takes ages.

when i enquired about this i was just told to upgrade to a gold package that cost R100 a month more than axxess similar offering.

tried for the past 2 dayes to cancel my account with no luck.

IMHO stay away.

Have you asked OW to maybe put you on another backbone?
I've never had issues with Youtube on OW, or well any more than a 384 line can give on Youtube.
Gaming on the backbones are perfectly fine.
Opening OW's webpage takes a while but in my experience it's because it carries a lot of content (something a 384 line obviously does not handle well).

Any issues I've ever experienced was to do with backbone-specific issues - broken cables or screwed routers.

Email MrBeep at ceo[at]openweb.co.za and I'm sure he'll be able to do something for you.

I raised my concerns re the performance it was their job to do the backbone switching or blood sacrifice or whatever it is they do in the back room, from my perspective i complained they said we have done something try again I did with no change in performance.
Well gaming for me is not fine, and they cant seem to fix it

From where I’m sitting they are over subscribed and have contention ratios that are through the roof, and if you want performance that axxess offers you have to pay 20% to 30% more.

They have been given ample opportunity to fix this and have not, all I want is the service cancelled so I can try Imagine and or mweb, and if those don’t work out go back to a capped service.

For completeness sake I have sent a link to the thread to the mail addy you supplied.

Quick Response from MrBeep via Email.

Good customer service as stated previously. The product is just not working for me.
