Openweb Uncapped Feedback

My 384 IS gold is crawling today. I switched the DNS to Google. Nothing. Speedtest.net takes forever to open(5min plus).

Anyone else?

I mailed MrBeep already. Just waiting for his response.

I loaded my R1 Afrihost backup and all is better. So it's not my line.

Afrihost

Gold
(Still waiting for it to load)Finally got it, nearly 14min to load.

My 4Mb IS Gold is dead today - can hardly even load a Web page.

Something wrong ?

Anybody else having this problem on IS ?

My Telkom account works fine, so my ADSL is OK.

MrBeep did a port reset on my account. Still the same. Back to AH.

We can't blame IS as AH is with IS as well and the speeds are fine.

I still say something changed in terms of shaping in the last 1-2 months with openweb. Every time I have asked why the speeds are so dramatically slowed down during the day, I got the reply that the network is shaped based on traffic on the network. I find it hard to believe that at 7:59 am I get 104kbs download speed and then at 8:00am I get 5kbs. No way in hell the network gets than busy every morning at exactly the same time and gets thrown down to 5kbs.

At the beginning of the month I cancelled my account. From what I hear from all my friend, during the day their 1mbs lines go down from 100kbs to 80kbs on mweb and they are also on the IS backbone like I am.

Uncapped SA style... During "peak hours" one has to use unshaped, capped account, no choice... Internet costs me R1759 per month for aggravation free browsing. The uncapped after hours account is also behaving erratically lately. Trying to download from Filesonic or Wupload is an absolute nightmare with downloads timing out regularly. I'm getting roughly 70% of my line speed on after hours uncapped... There has definitely been a general network degradation over the last couple of months...

I think file sharing sites are shaped into oblivion on IS accounts. I also get that. I thought being unable to use torrents isn't that bad because I can always use filesharing sites, but more often than not I'll get full speed upon starting a download from a FS site, then within the next ten minutes it will start slowing down until eventually it simply stops downloading at all. Ever tried downloading a .torrent file from a torrent site? It simply never finishes the 100 - 200 kb download.

+1 Also got that torrent file that does not want to finish downloading. The thing that my mind still can't understand is that with 384 line I got 38-40kbs on torrents and filesharing sites regardless of the time or amount I downloaded. With my 1mbs I get full line speed after 7pm on weekdays to 7am and full speed on weekends. Any other time I'm thrust down to 5kbs. And its not because of me downloading so much that I'm in the top 20% or anything as this has been happening since the first day I signed up with openweb.

Yeah, if you're on a Standard Uncapped account that's to be expected. We get shaped, and as far as I know, the Gold accounts don't. I didn't get shaped at all until the last few days of last month, and this month I get shaped between 12pm and 5pm. It sucks, but I guess I should be lucky that I'm only getting shaped 5 hours of the day.

EXACTLY what I am experiencing although there are 2 filesharing sites I use that seem to go at full speed. Won't be naming them here.

Sounds like your 1mbs account is running on the same criteria as the uncapped after hours accounts!!! IE throttled between 7am-7pm.... Really weird....

I am using the Gold 4m account and am getting shaped for sure.

Hmm, I might have it a bit wrong though, but that's just how I understood it. Perhaps Gold doesn't get shaped as badly as we do? I get download speeds of 6kb/s between 12 and 5, and the moment the clock strikes 5, speeds go back to normal.

Amen to the above in bold. I'm experiencing exactly the same problems. My account will be cancelled shortly if I don't get a solution soon (or if I'm told that it's "traffic based shaping" again when it clearly is blatant throttling...I have days worth of logs to prove it)

Getting fractions of a kb/s through NNTP at the moment on my 1mb Gold account. HTTP does not appear to be much better as I can't get speedtest.net to load in any reasonable timeframe nor can I even sign into Google Talk.

I'm getting a little annoyed with the constant having to contact Keoma to reset my port or change my backbone (once a week) as well as the poor performance of these Gold accounts during the week. I cannot fathom how they are supposed to have a lower contention ratio (which in my mind should mean more reasonable speeds during working hours compared to a standard customer) if the account is all but useless during the day. What exactly am I paying more for?

Even more frustrating is that these issues are new. I hadn't experienced any issues with OpenWeb either on my Gold or standard account prior to mid-July. I feel like I'm back on MWeb who also performed well until I had issues and tried in vain to resolve them.

This is the reason why I cancelled my Openweb account. I had the exact same problem and Keomo didn't want to tell me why its being "shapped" so harshly during the day. I am not paying for a after hours account and shouldn't be forced in using it as one.

Iwojima, I was thinking the same thing earlier. Why must we constantly ask Keoma to sort out problems? When Cybersmart was still OK, I had no problems at all for more than a year. Not a single router restart or call to them. I have been on OW now 2 months and I went through 3 backbones and a port reset.
Maybe it's time to move again.....

BTW, my R1 AH account is still running very well. Torrents are doing over 33 at the moment. Speedtest loads fine, etc etc. All HTTP browsing was a mission on OW this morning.

It's not just Openweb, it's pretty much uncapped period... Afterall Openweb are merely resellers.

5pm on the dot and suddenly speeds improve as quickly as they died at exactly 7am this morning... fancy that
