I've been switched over to IS from VB - only use nntp for downloads, what do you guys get during the day? currently sitting at 100KBs

Gold performance seems to have deteriorate significantly in the past month.

I used to like the IS backbone but seeing that all I can do with it these days, during 8am and 5pm is get onto MYBB, its pretty damn useless. Don't really know if its IS or Openweb thats putting these huge shaping/throtteling systems in but its gotten out of hand.

Why i get like 300ms over seas and 10-15ms local.

Rapid for some reason today and yesterday nntp was slow but in general i get full 24/7 speed.

On IS?

I used to get full speed or close to it on VB 24/7 :p its the reason I liked this product, if I needed something, I didn't have to worry about shaping times, etc - I could just add it to the queue and it would download at full speed.

IS for NNTP downloads are a big no no in my book. I had the exact same problem, I couldn't manage speeds of greater than 110-120kb/s max nearly 24/7. Switched back to VB, had one or two VB accounts that did the same, and then MrBeep gave me one that hits thesweet spot, get full speed 24/7 on NNTP again like I did for 8 months straight. Been using VB again for the past 2 days and the downloads have been flying and it feels justified again to pay R735 for that type of speed all day long :D
 
On 1Mbps VB Gold and getting 30KB/s on both HTTP and NNTP. Highly erratic.

Anyone else having problems on VB?
 
I was talkin about VB, for me VB runs full speed 24/7, had a bit of issues this morning but a simple router reset put it right :D
 
Ok - getting a bit tired of this - thinking its time to start looking for another product, downloading at 11KB/s on 4MB - this is back to being on MWEB - just more expensive.

Its taken me almost 20min just to get into my email to send Keoma a message.

OMG - I'm still trying to get into gmail- can't even get in in BASIC HTML mode

Yeah it's a shame really. Uncapped accounts have gone to pot!!! Maybe try the Uncapped After Hours @ R899 before you start looking for another ISP....
 
Had to use my Afrihost account to send an email about speeds on my 4MB Openweb Gold account :rolleyes:

Also checked what this account downloads at - 480KB/s - so its not my line.

There is definetly something up with the Openweb Gold accounts....

No chance am I going to pay R160 more for a product that should already be working - I'd like to see an explanation as to whats going on with the Openweb Gold accounts, pointless paying R200 more for them if this is how they perform now.

Switched back to the VB account I was using - its better, but still not what it used to be.

There is nothing 'going on' with OpenWeb Gold accounts. They are infact working pretty well as far as we know.

Some folks have isolated issues, such as yourself, which we try and rectify. The general state of Gold is still superior to that of any affordable based uncapped solution in South Africa.

However, to expect full speed NNTP all day everyday on a shaped solution is unrealistic, and if you do expect this, Gold Shaped is not for you. Perhaps our After Hours Uncapped Unshaped solution will then suit you better, or you can treat yourself with a Gold Unshaped package, which will give you full speed all day everyday on any protocol.

Due to the Telkom IPC cost per Mbps, no provider in this country can afford to offer full speed on all protocols on an account selling for less than R2000 per month. This is a reality until Telkom is forced by our efficient government to drop their pricing to a realistic level.

Gold offers a lower contention ratio, thus it is faster than cheaper products, but it is certainly not an unshaped solution.

I will be willing to waiver your 30 day cancellation notice if you wish to cancell, or perhaps you would like a free trial of our After Hours Uncapped Unshaped account?

I'm not expecting full speeds during te day, at no stage did I even state that? I am however expecting more than 10KBs - and would certainly like to be able to access my email from the account during the day... As stated earlier this week, I have barely managed over 200KBs since the 3rd of August.

I'm also not sure what te isolated issue is then, and thats what I'd like to see resolved, because a prepaid account works fine, which rules out my line as the problem... It seems every couple of months something goes wrong somewhere and the account(s) perform badly on a line for a week or two.

The switch to IS seemed to help for one night, and then suddenly everythin was crawling again.

Still incredibly happy on my Gold VB account. Working like a dream, except for that little issue Lycanthrope mentioned of it resetting every 24 hours, exactly at the time you initially connected with the account. Not really serious though, as I just have to make sure I don't have a http download running then. :P
