opera 9 problems ?

Its their fault (Vodacom) same thing happens with eskom.co.za been like that with Opera forever. In rare cases like that I will just use I.E or FireFox.

Strange indeed... It must be some form of JS coding Opera does not like or maybe CSS?

Yep, I think that's the problem, when I set opera to identify itself as IE or Mozilla, the site renders correctly.
 
How to do it

In opera go to Tool -> Quick Preferences -> Edit Site Preferences -> Network

Then at the bottom of the window you'll see Browers Identification. Choose 'Identify as Internet Explorer' Click ok.

Then all pages should display correctly.

Same happens in the previous version (8.5) when set to identify as Opera, but in that version, it was set to identify as IE by default, and that's probably why it worked previously.

Yep, just make shure you dont do this for the whole of Opera in general. this happens when you change that setting in preferences of the entire browser.

Its another thing i love about opera 9, being able to changes settings site specifically.

:D Well i usually use the little fox, just thought i would give the new opera a go and see how good/bad it is. Did the identification thingy already.

Ekhaatvensters: That is exactly what you should do, but the new Opera seems to work only on a per site basis. Type opera:config into the address bar, select "User Agent" and in the box that opens set it to 2 or 3 to fix it for good.

hmm.. but hten why is it set to ID as Opera by default. I know the older versions were ID as IE by default. I thought it was changed for a reasn.

Yu guys shure this is the right setting to leave it on for every page? Wont it be slower, even though maby a bit beter rendering for some pages? Id rather just change the pages that need to be changed.

I dont think it'll make a difference whatsoever, because this is only the way it identifies itself to the webserver, AFIAK it doesn't change the way it renders a page.

Yep it was changed for a reason. Probably to be compatible with Opera. Confused? Let me explain it this way. It was always set to IE by default. It should actually be set to Opera. The identification string is always sent to javascripts when they request it and is most often used there and not by actual servers. You can check this by typing "<script type='text/javascript'>document.write(navigator.userAgent);</script>" into an empty page and loading it.

Most scripts were therefor probably written to detect the 'Mozilla' string included with Firefox and IE and I've recently fixed one for someone which was completely incompatible with the Opera setting, but no one ever noticed it however. They rely on the 'Mozilla' string which is not included in the Opera setting. I say keep it set to Mozilla(2) or IE(3) until the Opera(1) setting is more widely accepted. You'll get a lot of sites that won't work on the Opera setting and some of them you won't even realize it as the buttons on the one I fixed was just missing without anything indicating there should be buttons.

Opera probably thought it was time to force people to write their scripts and stuff the correct way so they changed the default setting opening up a big can of worms and exposing all the lazy programmers. And some of these scripts are actually generated by editors like Frontpage or DreamWeaver. I see those people now probably getting a lot of reports from angry customers. Serves them right for taking shortcuts the greedy buggers. :D

What I dislike opera is when I use this forum, it don't give me a little detail of the post when I hover on the thread headings like IE does

do you ppl understand what I just said???

For ages, I have had the NoScript extension installed in my Firefox, which allows me to control which websites are allowed to use ECMAScript - only the sites I trust 100% to not have malicious javascript are permanently enabled to allow javascript, by default an untrusted website isn't allowed to use javascript in my Firefox,

Another extention for Firefox? In Opera you can just disable it in your general preferences and enable it on a per site basis. Can even control gif animation and background sounds this way. :D

piranha786: Are you sure you didn't change any setting? Maybe on a per site basis? Goto "Preferences->Advanced->Content" and select "Manage site preferences" to see if mybroadband.co.za is listed there and remove it. By the way be shure to use Opera 9 as Opera 8 had this bug.
