operation RROD

My XBOX RROD'ed on Tuesday. Started trying to get the process going on Wednesday morning and have now made my way onto Hello Peter. A copy of my post:

Microsoft responded very quickly, so kudos to whoever is monitoring their Hello Peter account. Now I'm waiting for MI Digital, but to be honest I have no faith in even Microsoft getting hold of anyone there, unless they have someone's cell-phone number or something. We'll see and I will keep you all posted.

On a side note, and maybe even worthy of a post all on it's own, if you have a look at the Microsoft listing on Hello Peter, it makes a VERY compelling argument to get a PS/3...

I'm helping out a games retailer with PS3 repairs in Centurion. They're getting in 5 broken PS3s a day. It's getting hard to keep up :o

I think the majority of the 40GB/60GB models are now failing. YLOD (yellow light of death), dead PSUs and dead lasers.

MI digital's service is shocking... If you check the xbox360za foum, you'll see tales of people waiting months for replacemet consoles, while others are being helped in about a week...at best their service is erratic

Erk. Ok so now I have 3 blinking red lights too *sigh* Going the MI Digital route ... but how long does it take?

I read earlier in this thread 7 weeks?! timgaul - yours was same day?

Just for interest sake, how old is your xbox (manuf date?)

2007 07 14 ... I bought it November 2007.

I actually remember people telling me 'RROD was on the old models ... as long as you buy the HDMI version you're cool' Pffft!

Had perfect ventilation (unit built with Xbox in mind) and - although 18 months old - it probably had 1/5 use many other owners have.

Btw - will MI Digital give me a brand new one or refurbished?

Probably refurbished, I would imagine. Which is why there's constantly a 'stock' issue.

I have not had any response from MI Digital yet, so today will be an interesting day of following up.

Bleh.

I'm actually thinking of getting a new Xbox 60GB anyway - and selling this when it arrives. At least I get the larger HDD, quieter driver and quieter unit.

No other beneifts of the latest vs mine, if I remember?

today is 48hour response day for me.

so im waiting till the arvie. then gona call. see if they at least got my fax of the warranty claim.

Heh. Good luck and keep us posted. I've logged another Hello Peter post this morning and after another promise by Microsoft to get MI Digital to contact me, I'm still waiting. These guys are such a service embarrassment to Microsoft, I have to wonder why they keep them around. Maybe because they're the only people willing to put up with the constant deluge of XBOX 360 hardware failures and swop-outs?

Microsoft are as much to blame as MI Digital.

The amount of complaints South Africans have about MI can fill an encyclopedia.

They know the replacement procedure doesn't work (officially 5 working days ... practically 5 months).

The longest a client of mine has to wait in terms of a repair is 14 working days because thats how long it takes for a part to arrive from my various international suppliers.

It's shocking ...

Day 8:

ITWeb phoned today. Apparently the journalist had more luck contacting MI Digital than I did. He gave me a bunch of numbers I already had and asked that I try again because they're now back on line after their office move. According to him, MI Digital don't know a thing about me yet and so they are unable to comment on their being unable to service me. I wonder about all those emails I sent to their address and all the Hello Peter complaints I copied to that very same address? Gone? Missing? Ignored? Or merely denial in the face of an inquiry by a reputable journalist?

So, I try to call all the numbers again and lo! And behold! They don't even ring anymore. Dead. It'd be funny if I didn't still have a R4000 door-stop and 15 utterly useless XBOX games. At least I can still practice my drumming lessons on the Guitar Hero drum-kit. You don't need the XBOX for that, right?

Status:

- No response whatsoever from MI Digital.
- No response from Microsoft anymore either. They've interpreted me telling them not to refer me to MI Digital again to mean: stop responding to my Hello Peter complaints altogether.
- Useless XBOX, useless games
- Apoplexia

Juice, at wits' end.

At this point I would go support one of the other two console manufacturers. But then console gamer logic seems to be different from normal logic, so you get people complaining and then buying the same sh1tty hardware again and again 0_o

I would, though the extensive investment in my current platform would make a change to another platform prohibitively expensive. They have me by the proverbial short and curlies, and judging by the fact that Microsoft doesn't seem to give a continental damn, they know it too.

Update: I've finally managed to get hold of Will at MI Digital. Their mail is down, and their fax is down, and yes, he is aware of the fact that the on-line submission form on the web-site isn't working. I got his direct email address and I sent him my...

WTF. Update on the update: Mail bounced.

I desperately need to kill something...

They should give a damn now, since in a few years everyone will be thinking "which console should I buy" and they will remember the current situation. I expect a lot of people outside of USA to wait around to see what happens to the hardware during its 1st year.

I expect MI Digital will also want to reconsider whether it wants such a troublesome licence in future, when they got the rights they probably thought this will be easy money. Now they don't seem to want to deal with everything that is expected of them.

Seeing as I repair PS3s and Wii's as well as 360, they all have crappy hardware.

The scourge of lead-free solder and Chinese manufacturing ...

Dead PS3s are stacking up in my workroom on a weekly basis (averaging 5 a week). The 40GB and 60GB models are dying at a rapid rate. Middle finger to the 0.02% failure rate ... its worse than that!

Nintendo Wii's have a "Black Screen Of Death" due to the bluetooth module not initializing that is affixed to the motherboard. Then no video with sound ... pathetic life-span on "next-gen" consoles I tell you.

Consumers are getting shafted.

I heard similar reasoning when I went for Lasik eye surgery, the optometrists have this idea that it doesn't really work because they have to deal with the problem patients. they forget about the majority of people that don't come back and complain.
